The Zombie Apocalypse is the new World War II, and has been for a while now when it comes to games. But most, if not all zombie games to date have mostly focused on just killing them in droves. Few have actually thought about surviving in a world full of shambling undead. Until Dead State, that is.
Developed by DoubleBear, among whose members were once of Obsidian Entertainment and Troika Games (the Arcanum people), Dead State takes survival beyond just getting to the chopper/boat/car and concentrates on the big picture. Set in the fictional Texas town of Splendid, the player manages a local shelter while going out to find food and supplies, gather townsfolk, and even make allies (or enemies) out of other groups of survivors.
In fact, with all those other concerns in mind, the slow-moving "traditional" zombies are probably the least of your worries...unless you ignore them, making loud noises and accidentally attracting a horde.
So far it sounds like an incredibly exciting game, the stuff of short stories you might find in books like Max Brook's World War Z. Check out some more details at DoubleBear's site, and some screens in the gallery. Its release date is still unknown, beyond the statement that it is currently for the PC, and will not be out in 2010.
A Blood Red State: Dead State Revealed [Rock, Paper, Shotgun]
My only wish is that they made it look grittier. I understand that these are in-development screens, but it looks a bit too clean for my tastes.
I literally quiver when it's mentioned.
Now that that's out of my system, I am definitely looking forward to this. Not many games put an emphasis on surviving outside of getting eaten alive, and I've been hoping they'd make one. And here it is! Fucking excite.
Fuck. That.
"I was excited until I saw the words "Turn-based".
Fuck. That."
Right, because Fallout and Arcanum were shitty games? Seriously, what a closed-minded fool. This game looks fantastic from what I see. This is now on my radar. From the looks of the comments section here I'm not alone.
Also the probability of this hitting consoles is very very low, don't get hopes up - it's being developed on a PC engine by a dozen or so people with no studio backing and in fact no studio AFAIK, just a bunch of passionate (though also experienced) people working from their homes. We'll be lucky enough if it gets finished.
Bought.
This is my biggest frustration...companies do not need to make their games accessible to everyone and their grandmother...please, make a CRPG with depth and strategy, a world RICH with detail and life....and undead.
But, even if this is a buggy mess when it comes out, I'm glad to see the fruits of these great studios still kicking. And currently my buddy and I are playing some Temple of Elemental Evil (me for the first time) and it's a really great game thanks to all the TLC its got from its community...as much as they've been able to do for that game. I just hope the Dead State inspires the community to do so much for it, regardless of the state of its release.
There's keyboard and mouse support on the PS3 unlike other consoles. Added with a more broader audience on it, i don't think its impossible to be done
Nobody in the last decade has produced finer Vampire fiction than Troika did with Vampire: Bloodlines (PC).
I'm not saying True Blood or Let the Right One In aren't worth watching, but actually play a Vampire in this game and you'll feel more connected to the experience than with any film or television show.
Just make sure to get the "fan patch." Troika dissolved before they could release more than one patch and the game was very buggy, but fans have taken the game under there wing and released many updates over the years.
Please be good, and please bring to consoles!
