Dead Space's executive producer talks sales numbers photo

Considering how Dead Space was a new IP, was released during the busiest time slot of last year, and the economy wasn't doing so hot during its launch, I can see why the game only sold 1.4 million copies.

That number was given by Glen Schofield, now of Visceral fame, during a Q&A session with GameSpot. He says he's actually quite happy with Dead Space's sales, all factors considered.

"Do I wish it sold more? Absolutely. But the critical acclaim and the number of awards -- we're at 75 and counting now -- have made [Dead Space] bigger than just the number of sales," Schofield said.

As one of the best horror games in recent years and easily one of my personal favorites from 2008, it's a shame more people didn't get to play the tight, atmospheric package that is Dead Space.

Psh. Dead Space was fucking fantastic, people just didn't know it yet. I'm sure Dead Space 2 will mop the floor with sales numbers.

Dead Space certainly isn't OMG BEST GAME EVER but it is easily one of my favorite games I've played. Of course, I love it more for the disturbing atmosphere that they've set for it more than anything.

And the baby-punting. More games could use that.

I didn't really like Dead Space at all. I stopped playing after about 3 hours. It was just RE4 in space. And despite how much I loved RE4, I have realized I never want to see another game like it again. I liked breadcrumbs though. More games should have something like that.

"Since when is 1.4M sold a failure?"

Well first you have to consider that its across three different platforms, so it didn't sell a million on any one system in particular. Which I guess by all accounts is considered a failure these days!

What Narishma said. 1.4 million units is pretty nice, if you ask me.

I hated RE4. In turn, I hated RE5. But God damn did I love Dead Space and it was one of my favorite games of '08. There was not a whole lot I could be angry about by the time I finished it. Here's to Dead Space 2.

@narishma: when other games sell over 10 million tends to make other game sales look weak.

Fortunately, for EA, it's not just about sales numbers. It's about profitability. And as a new IP in a down economy, it was still quite profitable. And with the amount of time they've been putting into the franchise, I'd say it's clear that EA views it as a success.

If Metal Gear Solid 4 had not come out last year, Dead Space would have been my game of the year for 2008, easily.

they really needed to release this game not in the busy fall season. They release this game after the holidays or well before, it would have certainly done better. just too many games at once to compete with

Dead Space was brilliant. I can't wait to see if they expand on the whole zero-G stuff. It was survival horror that was actually spooky.

The PC port was kind of bad... not BAD but kind of.

I would love to see them stop releasing so much great games on Q4, you have Q1 Q2, Q3 to do that.

Bitch, bitch, bitch... I was planning on picking Dead Space up here in the next few weeks, so what if it wasn't on my radar until now.

I've been kinda busy being unemployed, playing Fallout, Yakuza 3, Left 4 Dead, and finishing Rock Band 2. If EA wants to bitch, maybe they should lower the bar on their quality as of late, so I wouldn't consider buying any of their games.

That 1.4 million is a "disappointing" for Glen Schofield and his crew astounds me. Last time I hear about Dead Space it was at about half a million. It jumped up a million since then and it is "disappointing"? How bad are these business models with some of these developers?

Alright EA, time to milk the franchise for all it's worth!

i mean, the audio/visual design is really drop-dead gorgeous, but it's not all that good a game. it's all gimmick. that one sequence with the hulking mass of flesh monster you can't kill, though? that was pretty awesome.

it's good to hear it sold well because it means they have a chance to hire some decent level designers. the world of it is pretty sweet. the comic was pretty sweet, anyway.

i can't wait for them to expand on it. maybe flesh it out with a little more character development, and a few more characters that you could kill off mid-story or something.
a band of survivors during the event would be cool.

Dead Space was pretty, but it was all based on a gimmick that was pretty lame. Shooting something's limbs off is cool the first dozen times, but considering that you fight about three enemy types for the majority of the game, it gets really dull and formulaic.
On top of this, the game mixed the horror of Doom 3 with the action of ResE4, which are passable, but aren't what made those games superb. You can tell that EA kept a tight leash on the development process, because it's mainstream-easy, where some parts of the game are difficult but there's so little penalty for failure that there's never any risk involved, defeating the purpose of survival-horror.
But most of all, this is apparent because EA's whining about only selling 1.4 million copies, which is roughly a sixth of the population of New York City. But hey, it's not like I had high expectations of a company that uses 'exploit' when referring to a license. That's practically evil genius shit right there.
