Dead Space release date pushed up again, outright banned in three countries

8:04 PM on 09.04.2008, Nick Chester 63 comments

     PC

Just a week ago, we brought you news that Electronic Arts' survival horror title Dead Space had its released pushed forward. Today we have more even better news: the release date has been pushed up again, this time from October 24 to October 14 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PC version will ship on October 20.

We've also been told by Dead Space community manager Andrew Green that the title has been completely banned from the following countries: Germany, Japan, and China. That's right, there's just too much survival and way too much horror in Dead Space for these countries to handle. No word on whether EA has any plans to alter the game for a future release in those territories.

I haven't had a chance to go hands-on with Dead Space (woe is me!), but everyone I've spoken with who has only had good things to say about it. Who else is looking forward to donning the trash can-like helmet and killing some monsters?

I'm so excited right now. This and Banjo Kazooie are going to compliment each other nicely.

I'm getting more and more curious / excited about this game. I like the fact that it's been pushed up so much, stuff like that doesn't happen TOO often.

Germany and Japan. Such forward-thinking countries. I mean, I get China, but what's their excuse?

...Australia isn't in that list? Must be because all the horrible graphical murdering is vaugely justified. Looking forward to this one :D

Yeah, the Japan ban is confusing. So is the release date being pushed up multiple times.

The awesomeness of the actual game however, most likely will be crystal clear.

It's an insta buy for me. Sure I'll piss myself while playing. Sure I thought the game looked like drek when they started show monsters spoiling my desire for an exploration based space horror. But god damn if actual gameplay vids and previews sell me on this thing. It looks freaking glorious.

Japan has been cleaning up their games market lately, lots of censorship. See also: the removal of all the blood from No More Heroes.

Anyways, I'd have loved to play a demo, if only they hadn't debuted it on the last day at PAX.
RWarrior1CO's Avatar
RWarrior1CO at 09/04/2008 21:59
Nonsensical. But no surprise, I guess. RE4 was censored in Japan to take out the dismemberment and decapitations, and Dead Space's gameplay (apparently) revolves around those concepts. It would be really hard to censor out that stuff without completely re-doing the game.

I'm guessing this is more about some retarded taboos than any objection to graphic violence.

"Yes, a monster ripping out someone's entrails with its fangs is fine, but shooting a guy's head off? Heavens no!"

Pushing a game forward sends an odd message. To me, I would assume they had similar games that they didn't want it to compete with and they are ahead of schedule.
OR, they don't have a lot of confidence in the game and aren't spending the extra time to polish it up.

Could be just me, but I don't see that as a good sign. Maybe they want to market it for Halloween.

That's from the end of June. It looks pretty good to me, but it is a dev walkthrough. And it looks pretty good in the Xbox Live Dev diaries, too. I think they're just getting out from underneath Fallout 3.

EA dated Dead Space in February for Halloween. Bethesda didn't date Fallout until last month. With all the success that sequels have been having in the market, it should only make sense that they're trying to snag them before they get buried in the hype-monster that is Fallout 3.

I hope they're both awesome.

Let's go nerdy. Considering we move forward in time and this game's release date was moved closed to where we are (that is today), why "pushed forward"? Pulled backwards, maybe. Pushing forward you keep the direction you're moving in, in this case the future, thus moving the pushed object farther from where you are (again, today.)

Ok, it's friday morning, I don't feel like working and the boss is sporting a bad attitude. I have all the rights to go nerdy on Dtoid.

Lol. Its their loss if they want to ban a sweet game, but it continues to show the kind of ignorance that goes around. This games got hit written all over it anyway, and it should be interesting to see how it does before RE5 turns up in 08.

I'd say its highly likely that EA will have this one be region free anyway (Orange Box was region free on 360). If not german and japanese gamers will just import their copies, as I'm sure EA would rather see sales than let piracy give gamers their fix.

Roll on October, with Fifa 09 and Dead Space, EA are getting a lot of my money.

I think RWarrior1CO nailed it on the head as to why it was banned in japan....has anyone else heard the story of a kid decapitating a classmate, then leaving the head on the school steps? i think something with decapitation/limb removal as its main focus would be hitting a nerve for the Japanese.
