Dead Space producer talks censorship and the 'new' EA photo

IGN Australia has a pretty good interview up with Glen Schofield, executive producer on EA's much-covered sci-fi shooter Dead Space. In it, he talks about censorship, the ongoing ban discussion, and the difference between the "old" EA and the Electronic Arts of 2008. He states that Japan and Korea have both banned the title, but interestingly enough, Australia is letting it fly:

"Australia is getting the full, complete version. No cuts. We're not softening it for anybody. You know, I think a part of it was – he's not a killer. He's killing aliens and that's why we thought for a while we'd get it through in Germany. And they were like 'well, the fact that he can get dismembered pretty grotesquely is bad, so...' We thought it was cool."

Schofield brings up the attitudes of the old EA which were evident with some helpful "suggestions" from one executive:

"You know, at one point, one of EA's marketing guys – and I don't even think he's there anymore - said, 'hey – let's get a big actor to play Isaac' because that's what EA would do. The old EA. We had Sean Connery in From Russia with Love and it didn't do a damned thing."

Schofield claims that there is now a "new" EA, one that we've only seen for "two or two-and-a-half years" and we are only just beginning to see the kind of games it is putting out.

Dead Space is certainly exciting, and if it truly represents a blockbuster title for Electronic Arts that even the hardcore gamers can get behind, then maybe EA could be on the path to reform. Its CEO has stated many times that he wants his company to change, but we've not seen many moves forward to improve. Perhaps Dead Space is indeed the first in a line of quality titles from EA. We can only hope.

The question is, how bad will the DRM for the PC version be?

Yes, the wonderful new EA. That's the EA that only lets you install a game a couple of times, requires online activation, only allows one account per game (despite the manual saying otherwise) and tells you to rebuy a game if you have a problem with it. That's them, right?

saying they are "better" is like saying being punched in the face is preferable to being kicked in the balls.

New EA? Mercs 2 was shit and the only other game I've bought from EA this generation (Fight Night R:3) is still awaiting green light for a follow-up and doesn't look like it'll get one any time soon.

The problem with EA is not that they are arrogant and full of bullshit, but that their product is generally fail.

The new EA put out Spore with fail DRM, so I'm not feeling too happy with them.

Axle, Kotaku recently confirmed that FN4 was at this year's Gamestop Expo, so yeah, I guess it's been greenlit.

As for the article, it's good to see that EA are at least beginning to think about their development more professionally. Now if we could just get them to reconsider the (ridiculous) DRM...

Protip with ingame voicing...get a voice actor who'll do a good job not an actor that'll phone it in. Also I thought this might slip through in Australia since we're not killing people...we don't care.

@Timmeh I agree, this is why I am only buying EA games on console, there is no way I will spend $ on any PC games from them anymore- since consoles are a fixed platform they can't screw around with them the same way as PC games

All this inexplicable and inconsistent banning is pretty confusing.

But this "new" EA sounds good. Hope it lasts.

This game is going to be incredible. I can't wait to give it a play! Hopefully it doesn't suck. Glad I'm in the US where it's not being toned down.

I'd say there is evidence EA is changing. Dead Space itself is evidence, in that EA actually allowed a team to take a chance on an original IP aimed at the hardcore gamer, and they even seem to have spent a nice amount of money on the game.

I hope they keep it up in the future, instead of just releasing Dead Space 2, 3, and 4.

At PAX, I asked the Dead Space lead artist about EA about EA suddenly having some good, creative titles to put out, and he told me pretty much the same thing. The new CEO came in a few years back, and due to development time, we're only starting to see the new "good" games now, and that more are on the way. Either way, I like seeing them release games that actually have personality and are not just "Football Game," "Car Game," "Casual Game," etc.

Why did Japan ban it? For violence?

Hypocrisy at its finest, considering a good portion of the media they dish out.

Yeah Japan makes the most violent and gory films on the planet so why they would ban Dead Space I can't figure. Maybe cause there is no upskirt action to go with the gore and violence.

But wait a sec...Dead Space can't be gorier than Doom 3. I never herd of Doom 3 getting banned all over the place.
