Dead Space: iPhone coming soon, looks pretty badass photo

With all the excitement over Dead Space 2, it's easy to forget that EA Mobile has a pint-sized version of the sci-fi horror game in the works. In fact, I'd completely forgotten about it until EA reminded everybody.

Two new screens have been released for the game, which will launch sometime in the very near future. As you can see, it looks like it'll play very much like the console games, which is fine by me.

I'll definitely snapping this one up as soon as it's available. Looks hot.

And why they made Dead Space on the Wii a on-rails shooter, I'll never understand.

Err...hey Ipod Devs. Infinity Blade cam out. There's no reason why Dead Space's looks shouldn't be on par with IB.

If RE4 can work on Ipod, so can this.

Epic: A few things --

1: Dead Space has probably been in development for around as long as Infinity Blade, or at least has been in development before IB's release.

2: Epic only released Unreal Engine for iOS a week or so ago.

3: This look on-par with RE4 to me.

I'm conflicted on the 'how much is too much Dead Space' debate.

Certainly, there's a risk of over saturation here and titles like Ignition and whatever the on-rails Wii version was called could do more to damage the franchise in terms of perceived quality. But, I do believe that the overall exposure brought on by the extra games, books, graphic novels, etc. will result in more awareness and probably more titles sold. So, if they sell more copies of Dead Space 2 because of it and that facilitates a (quality) Dead Space 3 title, then its worth it to me.

I can always chose to avoid the "fringe" additions to the franchise, though I am interested in this iDevice title... Joystiq said it was alright, but the quality of these "other" installments won't shade my opinion of the console retail release that's driving the train here - I just think of them as really expensive commercials for the "premiere" product.

And why not making Dead Space 1 on Wii?

Looks good; wonder how it's gonna play. I hope in 2011, developers will be able to release quality tie in games for their AAA-titles.

By now there should be a dual analog stick peripheral for the iphone. Touch controls ensure that I play a game for no more than 20 minutes.

I personally really enjoyed Extraction on the Wii, so I don't think that would damage the franchise in any way. Actually it made me much more interested in the series' backstory, as did the comic. They actually lead me to go out and read Dead Space Martyr, which was the first video game book I ever read, and it wasn't bad at all. Also, I don't think Ignition would really hurt the series because anyone can tell that the rest of the series plays nothing like Ignition, and that really was just a little spin-off, unlike Extraction which to me seemed like a full prequel.

Because of all the usual bullshit reasons. Why release a downgraded port with Resi 4 graphics when you can release a rail shooter? Because heaven knows the wii isn't sadled with enough of those! The very fact that they're porting Dead Space to the idevices is yet another kick in the teeth to Wii owners from a 3rd party that just wants to make a quick buck. I own Dead Space on the PS3, but not everyone has multiple platforms. Plus they would have got more sales if they'd released a proper port rather than a rail shooter.

"The very fact that they're porting Dead Space to the idevices is yet another kick in the teeth to Wii..."

Read the article, son. This is not a port, it's an original title.

The reasons for no Wii port aren't 'bullshit' either - they're common sense business decisions... what was the last successful hardcore/shooter title on the Wii, 1st person, 3rd person or otherwise?

Go ahead, I'll wait...

Right... NO ONE BUYS THESE GAMES ON THE WII - and by no one, i mean like a few hundred thousand people, maybe. It's just not financially viable, the Wii install base has proven this time and time again.

"Plus they would have got more sales if they'd released a proper port rather than a rail shooter." That's just plain false.

It cracks me up when Wii owners bitch about this. It's like buying a Prius and bitching at Toyota because you can't tow your 22' offshore fishing boat.

I hope the new movie hits netfliks right away like the last one.

"GoldenEye".

@ Wolfy-Boey,

What is it that you're not convinced of? Dead Space is a survival Horror. Goldeneye is an FPS (are we really calling it hardcore?). What conclusion are you trying to draw between the two?

Also, Goldeneye didn't get overwhelmingly positive, glowing reviews or anything. It hovers around the low 80's/70's in most reviews. AFAIK we don't really know how many units it's sold, yet.

Dead Space sold almost 400k units the first week. Goldeneye sold around 140k. Now, obviously Dead Space was on two platforms, but that's just the thing. They can make a high-def "next gen" game for 2 consoles or make something a little more *achem* hardcore, for just the Wii and sell less then half as many.

You may not be convinced.. but so what? You don't make video games.

@TXYeti

argument isn't valid

Metroid Prime 3 as of 1.31 million copies

Red Steel sold over one million copies worldwide

Call of Duty games on Wii have been pretty succesful.

only commercial failures were

The Conduit and honestly no one was expecting that game to sell well the only thing the game had going for it was it's control scheme and no one knew who High Voltage was yet.

Red Steel 2, Great game, 270,000 copies worldwide sales weren't awful, but well below it's predecessor, due to a number of reason my guesses are not enough press, people being scared off from the series by the first game, and not enough people cared enough to buy Motion plus for that 1 game, seeing as it's the only released non-casual game that put's the M+ technology to good use.

Dead Space Wii won't happen though, because only a handful of people would care about it, plus the game was released 2 years ago.

Most people ignored Dead Space: Extraction because it was on rails and it was a new franchise, RE chronicles & house of the dead sold well because those were established franchises, In order for someone to have known Dead Space they would have needed to simultaneously own a PS3 or 360 so that severely cut down the games demographic.

@Wolfy-Boey, @Scissors

Not convinced? Argument invalid?

You're right - FPSs and TPSs on the Wii are not only routinely great gaming experiences relative to their analog-stick-controlled other-console counterparts, but also huge successes for the Wii platform itself, earning the developers some fat cash and literally *bloating* the retails shelves with popular titles in each genre - how could I have been so silly?

Grow up. Metroid is an outlier and your next best example is Red Steel with 1M sold worldwide over a lifetime... what's the usefulness of trying to defend your point here? Do you really believe that shooters are prone to success on the Wii? Stop being a conrtrarian and go play your Kirby game already.

Argument invalid. Not convinced.

This made by Gameloft? If so, then I'm pretty surprised they didn't release their own game, ripping-off Dead Space. I don't know.... Maybe Lifeless Comose? Seriously, you have N.O.V.A. = Halo, Shadow Runner = Uncharted, Eternal Legacy = Final Fantasy, those Gangstar games = Grand Theft Auto, Modern Combat = Modern Warfare, etc. But DON'T get me wrong, I'm really fine with it!!!

Looks pretty good in my opinion, but like some of you have said, too much dead space could be a bad thing. I just hope EA dont do with Dead Space what Capcom have done with Resident Evil and release a million spin-offs. Extraction is an exception because, i thought, that was excellent.
