Dead Space film in the works, had better be gory photo

According to a Variety report, Eagle Eye director D.J. Caruso is set to the direct an motion picture based on Visceral Games' Dead Space. The production of the film is in its very early stages; there isn't even a script or studio attached just yet.

The Variety report also mentions that Electronic Arts "is working on the second and third installments" of the series, likely referring to the upcoming Dead Space: Extraction and the more-or-less confirmed Dead Space 2.

This isn't the first Electronic Arts/Visceral property to eyed for the silver screen -- word had leaked earlier in the year that a film based on the upcoming Dante's Inferno was also being considered.

I think I'm gonna do something controversial and watch the movie before I say it sucks. That makes much more sense than yelling it will suck in all-caps.

it could be good. as long as they focus more on the horror of the monsters and the isolation of space. might be right up Lionsgate's alley

A faceless mute protagonist dismembering zombies in a space ship? While I love me some violence, I'm going to have to say I don't think this movie is going to be good, not because it's based on a video game, but because at least 90% of the movies that came out this year was mediocre.

The animated movie was actually not that bad at all. I suggested the flick to non-gaming friends of mine and their reports back were surprisingly favorable. Additionally, I remember reading an article detailing the thoughts of one of the game’s producers regarding modern horror movies. He was spot on in his sentiment that most horror movies miss the “timing” in moments designed to scare people. Whether or not his timing would nail the “scare” remains to be seen. The backdrop for Deadspace does have some legs when considered in a theatrical sense, but elements of the story would need to be fleshed out considerably in order to prevent any movie adaptation from seeming like an “Event Horizon” rehash. All things considered, I think this game is significantly more “screen-worthy” than many other games. Do I want to see it? It depends on the director and how much they can separate their story from other movies I have enjoyed. Can they top what’s already been done in “Event Horizon” and “John Carpenter’s: The Thing”?

Hey I just figured something:

Movies based on games = Total Suckage

Games based on movies = Garbage

Movies based on games based on movies = Said Suckage TIMES 10

Games based on movies based on games based on movies = OMGWTFBBQ

If only the movie-games were two completely separate mediums so we could I dunno STOP MAKING SHIT!

They're making a film that is based on all the scifi horror film clichés?

This should(n't) be interesting.

Lol….yeah, I am no fan of movies based on games either…but I think you may want to watch the animation (if you haven’t already). It was entertaining, although a bit short. I won’t go out on a limb and say Deadspace is going to win an Oscar, but there may be a remote chance for the flick. It only has two previous works to separate itself from; The Thing and Event Horizon. Both of these movies have a very big Sci-fi cult following, which could prove dangerous territory.

@pizza

Contradict yourself much? One second you are railing against the movie and then five minutes later you WILL (I wrote that in caps for you) see it provided a favored movie house handles the project….

I saw the anime at Best Buy for 26 fucking dollars. Not too cool if it's short.

Even so I believe that games and movies are two separate mediums that have to much in common for it to be worthwhile. The reason we have books made into films is because they just scraps of papers with writing on it.

Reading something and watching it are two completely separate things which is why it can work but with games your alreadly watching it in fact your DOING it so it's like watching someone ELSE play the game but with a worse script. It's like reading a book based off of a song! It's useless and only makes the original look worse!

I can understand that. As I said, I am not a fan of game-movie translations either and I can count on one hand how many of them I have seen….but with this particular property, I can see the potential for a decent translation. The animation, while not the best ‘toon ever, had it merits. I respect your views though and they make sense.
@pizza
You are the source of great comedy! I pointed out your contradiction in philosophy between posts only minutes apart from one another. In your first post you were going to “pass” on the Deadspace movie in support of your one-man (?) movement to stop game-movie translations (a personal choice that you encouraged all of us to do). Shortly after, you posted (along with a strangely hostile barrage of teen-like insults) that you WILL support a “Lionsgate” game-movie translation….uhhh, seems like a contradiction to me or at the very least “conflicting”. These are actions and statements that stand in stark contrast to one another in case you weren’t aware. I won’t bother to call you “dummy” because name calling isn’t my thing and your bigoted statements (“faggot”- that was cool how you switched my name around like that and all substituting “great” with a “trash” epitaph) serve as a better demonstration of who you are than any insult that I could launch. About Obama: you really need to get over it….elections are won and lost every four years….you’ll get another chance someday, maybe. Who I did or did note vote for has never been a part of my discussions here and will not be. You seem quite angry and your taunts/insults imply that you are a very bitter and small person….since I am neither small nor bitter, I won’t bother stooping to engage your rage with venom filled retorts….but I will have a good laugh at expense (I AM laughing by the way).

I will accept your invitation to sling words like weapons, Mr. Forty.

Perhaps I should use this opportunity to position myself as "hardcore" and tell you that should I get in a position of fear that I will get someone else's relations to gang up on you in an attempt to get back at you for something said anonymously over the internets, and that if that fails I will get the felons that I live with, who, in addition to continuing to commit felonies and not be caught, will commit a felony to you, and perhaps the ones you love, because of the "fronting" that you committed to me over a video game comment thread.

Well, I will recognize your commentary, but must inform you that it doesn't matter because I will move out of the country, and will live in the country of Europe, where I have dual citizenship.

I should also clarify that I am not moving away because I was tired of living with murderers who don't mow the grass or take their animals outside to doody, but instead because I feel that the United States of America is filled with people whom I feel are not unlike yourself (e.g. weak hearted, simple, similar to vaginas).

Also, as a preemptive measure, I will say "I know what you are going to say, and I am now officially finished with this conversation."

Sorry man, I feel kind of responsible for some of what happened here...I do think this is an interesting story and I am sort of excited (game-movies have a reputation – so my hopes are muted a bit) to see what develops.

As far as the other stuff....I haven't laughed this hard in a while.

I honestly think this could be made into a REALLY good movie. Especially if EA stands their ground and keeps the creative direction the way that it should be.

Well, Dead Space really didn't have that great of a story to begin with...it was, to say the least, derivative. Don't get me wrong: the gameplay was great but..

...that kinda puts the movie in a bad position.
