Dead Space: Extraction takes place three weeks before the original Dead Space. Its events run parallel to the anime and other assorted pieces of fiction. You’ll get to watch the invasion unfold and even meet characters from the peripheral content. I know this because the video below the fold told me this.
Earlier this afternoon, Visceral Games released another developer diary for the Wii-exclusive shooter. It focuses on the story, so give it a look if you’re interested in what Visceral Games’ has cooked up for the prequel.
It was easy to dismiss Extraction when it was announced -- on-rails shooters tend to walk on the terrible side. But if you take Visceral’s word, Extraction will be every bit as cool and tense as the original title. You can’t ask for more than that.
Im pretty sure I will be picking this up as, believe it or not, Dead Space was my most favorite release of last year I beat it like 6 times and I still play it!
As someone who didn't care for Umbrella Chronicles or Overkill, I'm very much looking forward to Dead Space: Extraction since it was first announced. It's good to hear that the game is shaping out to be better than expected.
The game looks good but more importantly the sci-fi setting, sense of atmosphere, gameplay pacing, controls, cinematic story and unique weapons should make for a unique experience especially given the lack of new things being brought to the on-rail horror genre.
First of all, of course Visceral is going to pimp their game and praise it for being cool and tense... duh! But i'll wait for a second opinion, you know?
Second, they talk about inspiration from Hollywood horror flicks and how it's going to be a cinematic experience yet all that i can see is that same old cheap thrills of: camera pans to something out of scene, noise is heard from the before scene, camera pans back and BAM! A monster. I did not see that coming, no sir.
Third, i gotta give props to Visceral, this is shaping up to be one of the finest (in graphical terms) games for the Wii. Looks on par with the best of the original Xbox.
I'm going to play through the original Dead Space this fall. It looks impressive so I am fairly sure I'll be picking it up eventually.
I really enjoyed Umbrella Chronicles and will be picking up Darkside Chronicles for sure. So my only reservation is that might be a little too much rail shooter. Then again, UC and Overkill were a blast to play in the dormroom with some buddies...which isn't really something you get from FPS anymore now that its all gone online.
Dead Space would have been my game of the year last year, had Metal Gear Solid 4 not been released. Honestly, it was absolutely amazing in every way, so I'll definitely be grabbing this.
The thing that pisses me off, though, is that the whole of the series is nothing but prequels. We got the comic book (which came out BEFORE the game, so that's fine), but then we had an animated movie which basically told us the same thing, and now a game to do the same thing again. It's already getting old.
Gameplay wise, it seems absolutely identical to House of the Dead and Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles.
I'm intrigued by the story following so closely to a whole group of survivors, but I don't see how this game could be considered vastly superior to any of the existing on-rails shooters. You're going to be doing the same thing for hours.
@pedrovay2003: I agree, Dead Space was an AMAZING game. The only thing I didn't like was that it should have been 6 Chapters, not 12; there was just a few too many "Oh look at that, ANOTHER DOOR NEEDS AN ARBITRARY KEYCARD, TIME TO WANDER OFF TO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AREA TO FIND IT!"
They obviously just wanted to stretch it out, but that did it a little too much. Still, it was definitely one of the best games I've ever played.

Wait.
Dead Space is my favorite 360 game by far.
