Dead Space DLC announced: In space, no one can hear you give EA money photo
     PS3

If you're one of those people who can't seem to get enough of Electronic Arts' sci-fi horror game Dead Space, then you might want to know that "Upgrade Packs" have just been announced as DLC. These new premium packs will give main character Isaac Clarke new suits and weapon skins to help him carve the Necromorphs into blood-soaked cheese strings, as well as carve a hole in your wallet.

The sheer number of packs that will be made available is shocking, especially when you consider that this is a linear single-player game. Ten packs will be available to both PS3 and Xbox 360 players. That's not including the fact that the consoles will each get two exclusive packs as well. This is actually insane.

Personally, I don't feel Dead Space is quite good enough to even justify one DLC pack, let alone fourteen. What do you think, though? Will the promise of an astronaut suit or a steam-punk force gun be enough to make you reach for your credit card? If so, enjoy your re-skinned weapons. I'll be playing Gears of War 2.

Equip Yourself with All New Weapons and Suits to Survive the Horror

Guildford, UK – November 10, 2008 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced today that the critically acclaimed Dead Space™ will be releasing premium upgrade packs* to provide the game hero, Isaac Clarke, an everyday systems engineer, with the ultimate Necromorph-dismembering equipment in his fight for survival aboard the space-traveling USG Ishimura. Players can experience the glory of strategic dismemberment November 13 on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace worldwide and the PLAYSTATION®Store** in Europe. These premium upgrade packs will be available on the PLAYSTATION Store worldwide November 20.

Winner of over 23 critic awards and boasting a score of 89 on Metacritic.com, Dead Space delivers the ultimate in psychological thrills and gruesome action. It is a bold and often-bloody sci-fi survival horror game set 500 years in the future. The innovative combat in the game calls for intense gore and character dismemberment that can be experienced even further with these premium upgrade packs.

The complete list of upgrade packs include:

No new gameplay? Just reskins? That's bull. I'm not giving them a cent for that.

You were doing so good ea, and then this.

I know, I know, it's not necessary to enjoy the game, but paying in addition to a $60 game for add on weapons is a a big fuck you from me.

I'm tired of this shit. Do idiots actually buy this utter, utter garbage? A new gun? Honestly, who comes up with these shitty fucking ideas?

How about instead of 10 stupid, retarded 'equipment packs', they gave us a new episode that was a couple of hours in length where we play one of the doomed Ishimura crew... that would have been cool, right? Running through the ship trying to survive/find someone while leaving some of those messages along the way that Isaac finds. These fuckers should give me a job.

Fucking parasites.

Ah there's the EA I know. The EA that has no problem squezzing every single penny out of their customers that they can. And to think I thought they were turning a new leaf by taking a chance and releasing new IPs like Dead Space and Mirror's Edge. Nope it's still the same EA, trying to charge for content that should have been in the original game to begin with. It disgusts me.

I love how people cry about extra optonal DLC. Every time it is announced people act like it is a scheme for EA to rip them off.

Looking at the DLC, at least they were smart enough to offer the option of just the reskinned weapons for the Scorpion and Elite suits, since some of us already paid/got them for free. Not sure if I'll pick these up, it really depends. Seems like actual content (not just unlock codes that function as cheats), so it's interesting to track EA's attempts to prevent you from trading in your game and strengthening the used game market; people are less inclined to trade something in if they've paid for some additional content that you won't get a refund on.

I honestly never get the hate hate for DLC like this. They don't force you to buy it, and obviously you don't need it, so it doesn't take away from the experience. They are a business, and it's better to try to milk it this way than putting out broken games or no new IPs. Quit your whining people. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

pd771 has it about right. As for me, I'm LOVING Dead Space and I never trade in games I love, even the ones I don't play again for years. Even so, I've no intention of buying this DLC. The only people who will get it fall into two categories, either they're people who really think it's worth it, in which case good for them... or they're completists who feel like they need to get every little thing for every game they own, in which case, uh, good for them, I guess.

Yeah, I can't really hate on this...if you don't want it, that's fine. On the other hand, it's priced pretty reasonably and if I were to attempt a second play-through on a game I really enjoy, I don't mind having the OPTION to do so with a slightly revamped arsenal.

I like how people are reverting to "Here's the old EA back in action!" over some bad DLC choices. You're basically complaining that EA is running itself like a COMPANY THAT LIKE MONEY.

We're getting complete games from them with original IP's and they're GOOD. Who cares if they still can't come up with good DLC? It's optional.

Are you all really that easily swayed of opinion?

go look at criterion, they do DLC. I think that this sort of nonsense is best left out altogether. I would rather a shadow that did not look like lego. I got the free suit on marketplace but I look like a mech zebra - the game is fairly tough so I may stick with it.

I love Dead Space and I would love MORE Dead Space. I think it's one of the best games of the year... but just offering re-skins is lame. Give me more levels or something I must know what happens next dammit, I don't want to run around with the Hot Rod Pack. C'MON EA you made an awesome product, stop acting like EA again.

I don't have problems with EA offering DLC, it's the type of DLC that they're offering. If this was a new level (assuming it's not something on the disk that I'm paying for unlock code) or something substantial I'd be all for it, but instead this is lame skins that take much less effort to make and do little to enhance the experience. (I'm all for free skins though)

Wait.... this DLC is nothing that different, not actually any new weapons... all they have done is increase the base damage output and changed the colour of existing weapons? Woo? Love Deadspace to bits but this is just shocking!

Well, I played it on my new PC, so no DLC for me I guess. Oh well. New skins? No thanks. I'm sure a couple of those would be neat to see, but overall I'd rather see some gameplay changes via different game modes or new levels that basically mix and mash whats already there.

It would be cool to have a Diablo-like system that randomly created dungeons to crawl through. If you think about it, its not that far off. Items and ammo already somewhat randomly drop in containers and off of enemies. If they could some how reconfigure the arrangement of the level structure, it could make for one massively never ending system of rooms and hallways filled with evil that must be purged.

@ wonky360

You do realize that the only reason EA is letting Criterion make such substantial DLC for Burnout Paradise is to keep you from trading in the game, right? Less used copies in the market means higher used prices, at which point you might as well buy it new. This is also why they're offering the entire game on PSN, so you can't trade it in. EA is just making strides in combating the used market, as you'll note that buying Rock Band 2 new gets you 20 free songs. Burnout will soon have individually purchasable cars, so it's not like giving you more skin options as DLC is that bad of an offense.

Besides, what are you going to add as DLC to a completely singleplayer game that is a self-contained (ignoring the comic and movie) story? A few random challenges, like Bioshock's bonus room DLC on PS3? It's hardly worth it, in my opinion. These are here if you feel like looking at something different after replaying it a few times, no one's forcing you to buy them.

Perhaps more substantial DLC will appear in the future. As is, though, none of that appears to be worth spending real money on. What ever happened to cheat codes and unlockables (I know, I know. Plenty of games still do that.)?

These skins seem lame, but I'd probably pay for another level or something. But really, I'd rather not pay more for anything. I spent $60 on the game...maybe I'd keep it if the game included more to keep me interested, instead of trying to sell me more.

Resident Evil 4 will never leave my collection, because I can always go back and play the merc missions. I paid less for that game than I did for Dead Space, and I think it's still the superior game.

...Especially since Downloadable Content pretty much breaks this game if you ever want to play it on another system. I downloaded the free suit, and I hadn't even used it yet. I went to a friend's house with my save, and it wouldn't let me load it, because he didn't have the same suit which was merely listed in the in-game store and not even equipped yet.

This game shouldn't have downloadable content period, even if it's free.
