Dead Space coming to Wii ... no, seriously! photo

We've just received word, via an Electronic Arts conference call, that last year's critically acclaimed sci-fi horror game Dead Space is getting a Wii release. EA CEO John Riccitiello announced the game just moments ago.

According to the silver-haired Lothario, the game will have a similar feel to the original PS3 and 360 title. He also stated that EA will be "bringing a lot of core intellectual property to the Wii," so don't be surprised if other well-known PS3/360 titles like Mirror's Edge start appearing on Nintendo's little white waggle box as well.

In many ways, a Dead Space release on the Wii makes sense. While the graphics are going to be considerably stripped down, the game's similarities to Resident Evil 4 make it a natural candidate for motion control. Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition felt right at home with the Wii's interface, and Dead Space will likely follow the same path.

Until we have more details, we can't say much more. Expect to hear further news on this soon.

Let's just hope it's not as "promising" as Dead Rising Wii...

RE4Wii was a really enjoyable experience for myself. I especially loved how it controlled and honestly, became so accustomed to it that playing the RE5 360 demo didn't appeal to me at all.

I haven't touched Dead Space, but it the Wii controls are anything like RE4, then I may look into it (Regardless of how bad the graphics might be looking back).

It'll only be cool if you can replace Isaac with your Mii character.

@whiteswirl If that were the case, AND your Mii kept its facial expression all throughout the game, then It'll be an instant buy for me. On a more pessimistic side, I see it being highly unlikely that this game will ever see home on the other white console. But then again constantly praying for stuff usually works, right?

Awesome, I loved RE4: Wii edition and I loved Dead Space I hope the control scheme will be somewhat similar. Since the game has the holographic displays Wii pointer control will be ideal at navigating those.

Ugghhh... Please EA make games designed for the Wii. Stop dumbing other games down. I still remember the horror that was SSX Blur.

"the game's similarities to Resident Evil 4 make it a natural candidate for motion control."

It's a 3rd person shooter. No different than Gears of War or any number of countless games. Why would the Wii offer better controls? It wouldn't. Just like most of the games on the Wii. The controls are forced and play like crap.

I still use a gamecube controller with any game that offers the choice.

Unlike everyone else who are jumping to conclusions, I'm going to wait to see what the game looks and plays like before I make a judgment on it. It ain't gonna be as purty, of course, but ...

Oh, damn, that's right. Graphics > gameplay. My bad.

Oh, well. Back to Saint's Row 2 on my PS3 ... before I get called Wii fanboy.

I dont want to crap on the games graphics before we have a chance to see them...I mean naturally they won't be as good as 360/PS3, but until we see them, just hold your horses!

Now, I do wish that instead of just porting games to the Wii that EA would develop new IP's exclusively for the Wii...but whatever :(

Oh John, you and your passive aggressive nonsense.

I think most people comment on the graphics, because Dead Space is one of the most graphically intensive games on the PS3 and 360 and in this case, the graphics where quite important among other things.

Nintendo's Wii... consistently bringing amazing games DOWN to their level, hehe.

I laugh, but I'm sure Wii owners will have fun and EA makes more money, so whatever. At least Wii owners will be buying an actual game as opposed to Wii Music or some such shit.

I honestly can't imagine this game on the Wii AT ALL. Crap graphics lesson the immersion of the game and I highly doubt they will keep the insane amount of gore in the current titles.

This is going to suck.

90% fewer enemies in the game, I bet. So, y'know, just going to fight the final boss, and that's about it.

They still haven't confirmed Mirrors Edge for Wii, but nice point.

This news doesn't surprise me at all. I just hope this decision doesn't interfere with the development of Dead Space 2.

It can have some promise. In Dead Space there really wasn't that much going on the screen at once so graphically, it might be able to be okay. Okay, not great. The motion controls, if used for aiming, would make blowing off limbs even easier.

I have Dead Space (loved it!) on the PS3, and I'm certainly interested in a Wii version...if they add anything to the game. Sure, the graphics won't be nearly as nice, but I still play NES games.

Honestly, if it looks at least as good as RE4, then I'm sold. I've got it on the PS3, but the aiming controls alone makes me interested in this.

all it would need is a graphics tone-down and I think that's about it. I hope this turns out well. Make it $39.99 and I'm sold.

"Crap graphics lesson the immersion of the game"

I get the point you're trying to make but I think it's BS. Yes, better graphics can help immersion but I don't think it's the be all and end all of gaming. If that were true, then immersion didn't really exist until this generation, right? I mean, how could you be immersed by games from the NES?

god, some people on here are so bloody narrow minded. RE4 worked brilliantly on the wii, and controlled better than before, and better than RE5 i might add. The wii can do decent graphics, it's just down to the developer. The experience wouldn't really be hampered, the frights come from sound and the atmosphere created. I just laugh at these graphics whores, who have apparently forgotten what gameplay is about, stuck in their analog world. What do they know about immersion?
perri's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/04/2009 11:28

How quickly you all forget.

RE4, Silent Hill, etc, etc. All had far better atmosphere than Deadspace and they were not in HD. It's really disheartening to see that as we move through this generation the graphical expectation of the Wii goes down, despite over all imrovement in how games look. This increasingly hyperbolic view of the Wii is pretty annoying. It isn't an N64, it isn't an NES. It CAN do THINGS.

the controller is a perfect match for this game. The first thing I thought when I played Deadspace was that it could be ideal for Wii. The antigravity portions could be far greater with the use of pointer aiming and obviously the horizontal/vertical dismemberment mechanic is a natural translation. I personally didn't think the game was that great, but I'm excited to see how they bring it to Wii. I'm hoping they don't skimp on the graphics, must looks like Metroid Prime 3 to reach my expectations. Come on EA, you've already proved me wrong this generation, prove me wronger...

Monodi, I too would like to see some Valve stuff on Wii.

Dead Space on Wii, is not a bad idea. A nice way game to sell to the adult casuals who missed it. Hey, if it works out for them and Capcom, with Dead Rising, fairplay to them.

Could be cool. The RE4Wii controls really should be bar for default standard for 3rd person shooter games. Controls-wise, I haven't felt more immersed by a shooter, possibly ever.

I've had it, whenever i get any closer to buying a ps3/xbox360, news like this pop up. Really i have never played anything on HD yet, so DR:CtyD and dead space and any other dumb-ed down game to even PS2 graphics is fine for my 'game immersion' levels which goes waaaaay back to gaming on cassette tapes. This is too exciting.

Dead Space's graphics were pretty amazing, and yes, they did add to the experience. Graphics DO matter, people. If they port the game to the Wii and it ends looking as awful as Dead Rising does on that system then that would be a big shame. Hopefully EA will be smarter than that, though, and work within the system's limitations.
