Dead Space 2 officially announced photo

It's the announcement we've all been waiting for (ie, we've all known about for ages). Today, Electronic Arts and Visceral Games have officially announced Dead Space 2 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Isaac Clarke returns once again to fend off the Necromorph horde in a story that will apparently see him "call the shots" from now on.

New weapons, a "huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters" and plenty of plot twists are all being promised, as is the return of Zero-G environmental chicanery and, of course, Isaac's trusty limb-shredding plasma cutter. All good stuff, I think you'll agree.

No release date yet, of course, but it's fairly safe to say we'll be tearing Necromorph heads off again in the latter half of 2010. For now, hit the jump for the official press release. All that remains is the question -- are your pants suitably clean enough for more sh*t-your-pants space slaughter?

Guildford, UK – December 7, 2009 – Visceral Games, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) studio announced today that the award-winning Dead Space™ franchise will continue to frighten gamers with its stunning sequel, Dead Space 2. Isaac Clarke returns for another heart-pounding adventure, taking the fight to the Necromorphs in this thrilling action-horror experience. New tools to gruesomely slice and dismember the Necromorphs complement Isaac's signature plasma cutter, empowering him as he meets new characters, explores epic zero-G environments, and fights against a relentless Necromorph onslaught. Survival isn't the only thing on Isaac's mind in Dead Space 2 – this time, he calls the shots.

“Like so many gamers worldwide, we love the Dead Space franchise and are very excited to announce a new game in the series,” said Nick Earl, Senior VP and Group General Manager at EA. “Visceral Games is quickly becoming known for delivering high-quality, action-packed games. Dead Space 2 is on target to deliver a jaw-dropping experience gamers won’t soon forget.”

“We’re thrilled to jump back into the series, making the next chapter in Isaac’s journey,” added Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer of Dead Space 2. “The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of Necromorphs that need killing. In Dead Space 2, not everything is exactly as it seems. Expect plot twists that will surprise you and a huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters that are sure to scare the daylights out of you.”

Originally launched in 2008, Dead Space quickly became one of EA’s top rated wholly-owned intellectual properties. With close to 100 industry awards and an average critic score of 89*, Dead Space became a hit with horror and videogame fans worldwide. In 2009, EA launched Dead Space Extraction for the Wii™, a prequel to the original Dead Space that expanded the fiction and brought the franchise to a new audience.

Dead Space 2 is being developed for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and on PC. This product has not yet rated by PEGI. Meh. Isaac's story is so finished, everything added doesn't sound like a good idea.

I'd be happy if they gave us more zero-g/vacuum environments. Now lets hope the marketing for Dead Space 2 isn't as embarrassingly bad as the marketing for Dante's Inferno.

I’m surprised Isaac is the main character again, he already knows how to handle the Necromorphs.

I thought that’s why a lot of horror games always change the character for each entry, so that it’s scary because they’re vulnerable.

@ Handy:

Maybe they'll do something to freshen the experience like maybe give Issac a giant scythe for strategic melee dismemberment.

The first was my surprise of last year, and ended up being one of my go-to games for scares and slaughter for months. The only thing that bested it in the end was Left 4 Dead. I am definitely looking forward to the next one.

After pimping how action packed the game is going to be, and the aggressive stance the main character has taken, I sure hope the game still has you wandering unnervingly quiet corridors, and experiencing the anticipation of combat. I don't want Dead Space 2 to be a re-imagining like RE4 was to RE3. I think the anticipation of combat is what makes or breaks a game in terms of it being of the survival horror genre.

I hope they take what they learned about the sort of forced pacing they dealt with in Extraction and apply it to the sequel.

I can't fucking wait for this.

Wait a second. Wasn't part of the story of the first game that Issac was crazy? Why would he be calling the shots?

I would have kept this game if it had multiplayer. The replay value was kind of non-existent even with all the awesome add-on dlc.

I still need to finish the first game. I picked it up about a month ago on a whim because of the 20 dollar price tag and am only on chapter 3.

EA has guts again. Not a perfect track record of late but still the aim of quality, visionary games is a positive sign. Now if only people would buy them...

about 5minutes ago i finished dead space. pretty good game really enjoyed it. maybe the scenery got a little tiresome about 60-70% of the way through, but i would say one of the better games i have played in a while. resident evil just lost its crown

Finally, and nice to see Mr. Clarke alive after all.

@Vice: Agreed, even worse, it's becoming a trend more time/resources/development is spent on multiplayer than the main campaign.

At first I thought that bringing back Isaac Clarke was a stupid decision but then I thought about Ripley from Alien franchise and what they did with her character by bringing her back constantly.

It made her the Alien expert and put her in ridiculous situations.

Then again if Isaac Clarke doesn't talk I don't know how that would work.

BAH

Eh. I'm a little over half-way through the first one right now, and I am not impressed. If this one manages to include more variety and actually manages to scare me, which the first one has almost completely failed to do so far, I might look into it. Otherwise I will probably skip it.

What will be cool now is if you have completed the first game to have you be able to transfer all your weapons, armor, and upgraded ability's over to the new game.

What ruined Dead Space:
1. You got too powerful and lost all sense of danger or fear.
2. The story got old fast and the 'find my girlfriend' sub plot never worked because Isaac never spoke or emoted. He didn't even face people when they talked to him.
3. The sheer number of necromorphs ruined the scare factor, you cant be scared of something you can blow in half with the starting weapon that also looks like a 13 year olds idea of 'scary monster'.

And by the sounds of it they've completely missed all of that and gone with the 'Bioshock 2' route of development; more guns, more player power, more enemies. My hype for this game is officially dead.

I'm definitely going to be buying this. Dead Space was a lot of fun, had it's share of scares and I just liked the way the game handled overall. And to those that didn't like that he did not speak at all, in my opinion I liked him as the quiet protagonist. Because his actions throughout the game spoke very loud. Like how you seem him crawling for dire life from necromorphs, and so on.

!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!

The last boss fight in the game was a little disappointing. If it had a lot more variety in that last fight, it might of finished with a bang. Also, the nicole sub-plot was alright. Also, didn't it seem like Nicole's necromorph killed Issac at the very end? I'm glad he's alive and all, because it bothered me knowing that he overcame all these horrors and giant monsters only to be blindsided at the end with an attempt at a cheap final scare/chiffhanger. But knowing that he IS alive somewhat ruins that scene. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

They've revamped the Dead Space website, too: www.deadspace.ea.com

First pic they have up, in addition to the ink blot, looks intense. Of course, can't see the full pic, but I'm stoked!

Hopefully Antony Johnston and Ben Templesmith are back!

I'm so excited. I loved the first game, definitely my favorite game of 2008. It's what RE5 should have been. I cannot effing wait for this. Maybe this time I'll get to play a harder difficulty with my upgrades and weapons? Please EA?

Officially announced, and I am now officially excited. The first one sacred the piss outta me more than a few times, and while I eventually got a little de-sensitized by the end, the last level was still cool as hell, and the subplot was awesome. Soooo can't wait for this...and the necro-baby creatures still creep my brother out to no end, even just a mention gives him the willies.

@Chaotic Wolf: I don't think that was a necromorph at the end, that was just Isaac Hallucinating. for one, The screens were filled with those unitologist letters, and secondly the necromorph in question was not distorted in any way. It was as human as he was. So I don't think it could have been the real Nicole, just a hallucination.

SPOILERS!

It would be kind of a silly ending if the Nicole Necromorph was real anyway. Think about it. The guy gets into a shuttle without checking it thoroughly for the very same monsters that have repeatedly been attacking him, then, after he saves the day (sort of) this Nicole-romorph decides NOW that she's going to pop out and attack when she could have attacked Isaac at any time while he was flying TO the planet.

Then we're expected to believe Isaac could be taken down by one Necromorph when he spent the whole game slaughtering them. Pfft, sure, whatever.
