Dead Space 2 is happening, act surprised photo

Follow me a second, folks. Pretend it’s Christmas morning and grandma just gifted you another homemade sweater. Because you don’t want to see the old fart cry, you act surprised, perhaps even elated at her redundant and oh-so-trivial gift. I’m asking for that surprise right now. Ready? Dead Space 2 is being developed.

I know, I know. It’s not the worst-kept secret in the industry (the PlayStation Portable GO! is certainly the frontrunner in that category at the moment), but we’ve always sort of known about its existence.

Anyway, the proof is in the LinkedIn page (via Supererogatory). EA’s Pratik Patel recently updated his page to reflect his technical/development director status on the game.

The only thing I ask for out of a Dead Space sequel is more instant kill animations. I want more baby-on-my-face, tentacle-sucking action, because, well, that stuff rocked. What do you guys want? Are any of you not down with this?

The first one wasnt to bad besides narrative cohesion. If they lower to a 40 dollar game off the bat, I'll buy it.

More disturbing death animations would be a good idea. The first Dead Space had some pretty gruesome death sequences, like one where the baby head decapitated you and took your body under its control. But with this, it gives them the chance to be more unsettling with it. Like have the little tentacles on the baby head go into your mouth, many tentacles start to pop out of various places on your body and then the tentacles come out all at once, making your body explode.

Weird but awesome. Also, as long as they don't screw around with the plot too much, I'd probably be down on it. And if they can find a way for the flamethrower not to suck.

I would definitely like more variety in the environment, more ways to dismember, and for the pulse rifle not to suck.

Traps. You could lay down like a plasma pad or some weird shit like that and lure necromorphs into it. I don't know.

Definitely NOT co-op. Remember how easy and laughably NOT scary RE:5 became because of co-op? 2 players may be good for action games, but if you want 'HORROR' then you have to go it alone.

Personally in a sequel for what was probably my game of the year last year, I'd like to see more variety in the enemies. Sure cutting them apart is cool, but after a while it's just 'oh leg shot arm shot, collect ammo' give us some freaky mutant dogs or just...more kinds of mutants. Gameplay was great, but the environment got stale after a while. Metal room to squishy room to green leafy metal room to outer space. Put the conflict on a planet, and we'll be in business.

Ugh, please no co-op. RE5 was basically ruined by it. What I would really like would be more "dynamic" enemies, if that makes sense. When I originally heard of Dead Space I thought every enemy would be able to regrow limbs at will and basically mutate as the fight goes on. So you shoot off a leg, it grows 2 more there, shoot off an arm, grows a big tentacle with claws, etc. Things like that would be awesome. It'd also be good to have random enemies spawning and moving around too.

This is a day-one buy for me. Don't care what's new and what's not --- I'm getting it as soon as it's available if it's anything remotely like the first one.

Dead Space 2??? OH YOU DON'T SAY???

Seriously, this is still exciting news to me. DS1 IS the best horror game to come out in years and was just what I needed ever since Silent Hill stopped being relevant five years ago.

I like to see some melee weapons like the plasma chainsaw in the movie. Also a PUSSY mode, where the walls are painted with neon-bright rainbow colors and the Necromorphs are replaced with kittens and puppies. That was a bit too much for me in the scares department.

No co-op! Plus I want to see zero-G 2.0. I think they could do some interesting things in that respect. It was one of my favorite aspects of the game.

Also unless it's zero-G engineers vs necromorphs MP isn't necessary. The more I think about it the more I want zero g horde mode.

I love me some more survival horror.
But this time i want to get lost and i don't want that user friendly GPS objective locater or watevah and more boss fights.I think chking the map every minute is fun (at least in silent hill).

Come to think of it, I'd like to see way more Zero-G environments. Those were the best parts of the first game, but there were way too few of them.

@ blackdeath1347

I fully agree with more variety in the levels. How about dead space on a planet with the variety of Zebes from super metroid! Now THAT would be a cool game.

Also, I pretty much only used the plasma cutter and a flamer in emergencies.. So, maybe enemies that require using different weapons? dunno

I loved the zero-g aspect of the game, makes things so much more intense when things are coming at you in every direction.

Updated zero-g would be a plus. Instead of just barreling towards a wall, you should be able to shoot at enemies and maybe change direction with some kind of thruster boots. Mmmm, thruster boots. And random enemy spawns would be a great improvement; knowing where every creepy-crawley is going to pop out got old. Still, this is going to be a first day buy for me.

Even though I haven't played it since I've beaten it, Dead Space is one of my favorite PS3 games and the best survival horror title I've ever played. Stale environments? Never noticed them, too busy kill necromorphs and getting the crap scared out of me by the amazing audio production that went into this game. Pulse rifle sucked? Didn't mind since I nearly maxed out my plasma cutter. Thin story development? I could barely follow the plot between Downfall and the events in the game. Light character development? In that situation I wouldn't imagine you'd have much time to chit chat while running for your life (you are fucked and help is not coming).

So for all the things that may have been inadequate for some, I found a lot more in the experience of actively playing the game that more than made up for it.

What could be better? Everyone griped about the weapons so how about some real ones--of course you can't change that without changing the context of the story/game so maybe the story is set after a military ship like the Valhalla tried to tie the whole debacle off. I agree, set it planetside and you may get more environments out of that--but the claustrophobia is part of what made the game so freaking scary. Definitely more enemies that behave but don't give me another necro with 4 arms that behaves like every other four-armed necro.

Yeah, I like Dead Space--so yeah, I'll be getting DS2 as well as Extraction on the Wii.

While you can say there was shallow character development I agree with absolutzero on this. Also to note that he wasn't supposed to be a hero. Rightfully so he didn't become one till the end. He was just supposed to be your average Joe that was repairing the ship. He didn't do anything special till after he destroyed the relic. Then he might of even died. Shallow character development was rather brilliant in this light as we don't play many games where you start off as a nobody and at the end are a nobody still.

I really like Dead Space, but it had some flaws. Namely, I felt like the story did not live up to the one built in the comics and the website. There were glimpses of a great story, but they did not really pursue the narrative of the Ishimura, her crew, and the Marker enough. There was no real characterization of anyone, and all you did was fetch quests and ship maintenance. Its like they took System Shock 2 and removed most of the audio logs and story.

Also there were way too few interesting enemy types considering the Necromorphs were supposed to be just randomly mutated humans.

Still loved it though!

Okay, if your going to have another ds game, you need to have new enviroments. yes i agree with this. BUT they need to be cramped, like a jungle with a thick underbrush and necromorphs can and have to come from any side, making you have to watch your back. also, need i guess, some new weapons and harder acheivements. no co-op, pleeeaase. thats what ruined RE:5. more zero-g enviroments. make the player have to steer a fast moving ship through an asteroid feild, like they did on Star Wars. more character development. more enemy forms and have some necromorphs trying to break into a room filled with uninfected people(like in the movie) otherwise, a Great horror game.
P.S. have more intensified music.
