"It is rare that a game can actually scare me" I'll second that, Jim. Most horror games don't bother me in the least, but Dead Space has a way of giving me the creeps like no other game does. I think it's the sound fx, but whatever it is; it works.
I heard about the amnesia when yahtzee reviewed it and I wanted to play it ever since but my laptop would not probably handle it. :( I wish it was on a console instead of a PC.
i want new scares in my horror games. the elevator scare in the church completely failed. i literally stared at the vent and waited for the inevitable attack.
i am disappointed with the scare portion but other than that it was good
Demo get.
And to all the haters: Fuck RE and your Survival Horror genre. This is better. Acceptance, get some.
Looks really stunning too.
Thanks for posting that dude, I'm gonna sleep like a rock knowing you took the time to tell us all you don't care.
Personally I'm finding the demo has some strange side effects whilst playing. For some reason I feel fear and my trousers become inexplicably tight in the frontal region.
yes but better in what regard?
horror? that's a big fat no. there are a few moments of "OH SHIT" but nothing that has me fearing whats around the corner.
gameplay? absolutely. its a blast. while i dont have any problems with the "tank" controls of RE. i will admit, i like dead space' controls better.
also, at the risk of sounding bias, Resident Evil Remake would like to teach you true horror. hell even eternal darkness would.
ALSO also-opinion, understand the concept some
That was said more in jest than anything else, but since you ask... I do have a bit of an issue with traditional survival horror, and more specifically RE purists that claim games like Dead Space are ruining survival horror. The problem is that survival horror (RE in particular) is synonymous with masochistic controls.
The "suspense" in RE certainly never came from the writing or characters. It came from the anticipation of something killing you because the inadequate controls make it difficult to escape Turning around and running in every other genre is pretty simple, yet survival horror games turn it into a chore. The fear of death was never scary for me in RE because I don't feel bad when someone asks me to shoot pool with a rope.
/whine
Anyway, Dead Space fixed all the issues with the controls and kept some spooky moments to boot.
"It came from the anticipation of something killing you because the inadequate controls make it difficult to escape..."
FINALLY! Thank you!
Demo didn't disappoint...
Loved: minor button layout changes, greater graphic detail, relentless action, new locales, faster melee, new zero-g mechanics, overall tighter controls
Didn't love: "fixed" reticule size, Isaac's voice, less claustrophobic atmosphere - the Ishimura was just so damn creepy with tight corridors and creaky ship sounds of stretching metal and falling wrenches...
Pretty sure it wasn't the first level. There's not really any narrative revealed in the demo at all 'you're trying to get to someone'. There might be a "whoa" moment or two, but probably no deal-breakers.
Sorry if I came off dickish, I wasn't bashing any game in particular. Rather, just outdated control schemes in current-gen games.
I want to like it, but it's like most horror movies these days. It just doesn't scare me.
Same. Lemme guess - Resident Evil doesn't do much for you either? You might be a psychological horror guy. I was never scared by horror games until I played Silent Hill. Same with movies until I saw The Ring. Which is kind of funny, because most people said it wasn't scary at all. I've come to think being affected by overt horror and psychological horror is mutually exclusive.
Anyway, try out the Silent Hill series, the Fatal Frame series, and to a lesser extent the first Condemned game. If you have a PS2, I keep hearing about a game called Siren that was great, also PsyHorror. Try that one too. As for movies, Paranormal Activity just got released, and it's supposed to be fucking pants-filling. Finally, look up Marble Hornets on Youtube. I genuinely wished that I hadn't watched it for a few days afterwards.
I wouldn't be bothering with this post if I didn't have pretty much the exact same problem as you. I bought the super-ultra-special-limited edition of Dead Space, the $150 one, because I was so damn excited about a good horror game. Was very disappointed. Good luck brah.
it's all good man, I completely understand that some people hate RE controls. But there are those of us who absolutely love them, and will throw an epic bitch-fest when they're inevitably changed. Stay tuned for that, it's going to be ugly :-)
