Doesn't seem that bad to me. I'll probably get this when I get the game on Thursday. I'll probably have the girlfriend using the map app, while I sit next to her on the couch playing the game. The price is a bit high, but the damn tax on the game is more.
I don't see what the problem is except for the price. I think its cool that you can haves device showing the map without having to break away from the game.
Having said that I grew up playing consoles that only had 2 buttons on the controller so I think lots of things are cool pretty much by default.

I have all sorts of apps like this. Difference is most were free or just .99, other than price who cares? It's nice not to have to pause and check, pause and check.
I looked at the itunes discription and it seems to be prett cool. It looks like they not only show the locations of every thing but if you click on it it shows a screen shot with the item circled and it lets you check off the things you've already got. If it was $1 I'd pop on it but not at $3.
I'm playing Metroid NES on my 3DS at the moment, and since I suck at remembering where to go I printed out a map from the Interwebz. I must say that having a physical map, and having to manually deduce where on that map you are, is kinda fun. I guess that this app is similar to having a paper map, especially if you have an iPad. So... yeah... not sure about where I was going with this but... yeah...
L.A. Noire has a similar app that I purchased and found very useful for keeping track of the hidden objects as I found them. I just wish it had a walkthrough built in too.
Still wish they had something like this for GTA IV. google map style that let u add markers and whatnots
