Dead Island concept art provides sun, sea, and splatter photo

I sincerely hope Dead Island is a metaphorical label rather than the resort's actual name, otherwise the area's tourist board really needs some new staff. You might as well open a theme park called Vivisection Land or invite people to the Necro-Erotica Hotel and Leisure Complex. Actually, scratch that last one. Advertise on the right sites and that place would be packed.

Naming issues aside, Dead Island is the new cavalcade of zombie carnage (Anyone sick of those yet? No, didn't think so.) from Call Of Juarez creator Techland, set for a 2008 release on Xbox 360 and PC. It's a first person survival horror following the story of a couple who's romantic tropical holiday goes horribly wrong by way of a plane crash and an island paradise full of the old brain chompers. Nick played a very early demo of the PC build at E3 2006 and was distinctly unimpressed with the AI and some of the design, but with at least 18 months set to separate that disappointment from the game's release, there's plenty of potential for things to have improved by the time we get to play it.

Currently the main selling points (according to the press release at least) seem to be non-linear progression through a branching story, advanced group and individual enemy AI, freedom of player approach to combat, and most important in a zombie game, detailed and realistic anatomical damage modelling. Whether we'll get to play as both halves of the couple at various points in the game, Call Of Juarez style, is unknown, but given that the dual character mechanic was so narratively impressive in that game despite the rest of the flaws, hopefully Techland have seen the potential of the set-up they've got here.

We've got some concept art in the gallery showing off the game's interestingly bright and sun-drenched approach to a zombie apocalypse, as well as the press release after the jump. Check them out and see if they raise the interest of your inner haemoglobin junkie.

[Sorry David, I couldn't help myself. -Niero]

Honestly I'm curious where this title will lead. But I'm getting that egg'd on feeling like Gears for some reason. But I hope it retaliates with a more RE4 perspective, I enjoyed that more (than some grovelling misband of armored anti-heroes). Just the fact it makes reality feel naked, and devstated under humankind's own loss of morale. Or maybe its Condemmed with the undead, thats a pleasant thought after all.

Is it just me or is anybody else also getting Lucio Fulci's Zombie flashbacks? Well time will tell if this game is any good.

P.S. They need a zombie vs. shark part, I'm just saying...

they had me until FPP. survival horror games should be in the third person, especially if there's hand-to-hand combat... unless they somehow manage to do as well as Riddick did with hand-to-hand FPP... but still, no, this should have been third person.

It's good to see that sterile 80's airbrush artwork is making a comeback, not.

I don't know about y'all, but if my wife and I were separated on a zombie-infested island... fuck her. All bets are off!

I disagree, kawitchate... A First Person survival horror game seems like a great idea to me. More immersion = More awesome.

@ Blaaguuu

Third person makes you feel vulnerable. It's scarier to see something to your side than see nothing at all.

And if it's anything like Dead Rising i'm in.

Not to mention the font of the title is stunningly reminiscent of Dead Rising's title.

Excited is me.

Yes! Fulci! Zombies, Sharks and Splinters, oh my!

I agree though, if it's anything like Call of Juarez it's going to blow. Maybe they've learned to not suck since then...

Looks good, but I too would prefer it to be third person or at least offer it as a default setting. Third person is always better for this type of game, to really make you feel like you are there, and if the charcters are a couple, you'd want to see that on screen connection in order to make that part not feel contrived as just a pointless plot .

Left for Dead is already doing a similar FPS and that looks good too. Both of these games need to learn from Gears of War, and why its third person, for the same reason RE4 was. To create a sense of panic, danger and claustraphobia. Taking away some control offers that, but FPS games are too free roaming and entrenched in gung ho run and gunning play. Doesn't feel write if you don't intentionally have to hide or run away sometimes.

I might still check this out, since I love the smell of splattered zombie brain matter in the morning. I'll hold my ammo til then.

Let's all just pray that The island isn't populated by black zombies. That would be so fucking racist. Unless the protagonist is also black. Then it would be a step forward in the plight of the under represented minority video game characters.
