DDO: Eberron Unlimited will be available on August 4 photo

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited has a release date. Earlier this afternoon Turbine, Inc. announced that the digital upgrade “Eberron Unlimited” would be available for download on August 4th.

Don’t think of the upgrade as a typical MMO expansion. “Eberron Unlimited” does come with the traditional enhancements and core game tweaks, however, it’s also packs an unconventional overhaul of the way people pay to play DDO. “Eberron Unlimited” will make the game a free-to-play MMO and give players the ability to buy unique items or get whatever they need through a nifty store.

Below in the gallery, we’ve uploaded several new screenshots taken from two new modules in the game: the Ruins of Gianthold and the Devil of Shavarath.

We’ve talked about the digital upgrade quite a bit, but we’re still wondering something: how many of you are going to try this out?

[Update: Whoops. This story now has pictures! Yay!]

Also, I won this today:

My roommate has been looking for a free-to-play MMO for a month or so. Having just told him about this, he's definitely excited for the expansion pack to release, and I think I'll give it a very casual spin while he's at it!

If it's free, you can't knock it until you've tried it.

I played a lot of DDO last year, and the free-to-play certainly helps me going back to the game. I am playing the beta of Unlimited, and so far the new stuff is great. I'm not sure I like the store, but if anything, it'll steer the game in a new direction.

I remember badly wanting to play this game back when it was released but never getting the chance to do so. I guess now that it's going free-to-play is a good a time as any.

To people who have played/play DDO, is it worth playing? I suppose now that it's free it can't hurt to try. I'm still interested in hearing about the game from someone who has actual play time invested in the game and also frequents destructoid since everybody knows D-toid is the best site evah!!

so if you get a premium account for let's say a month, what happens if you want to switch to f2p? or does that mean you need a new account altogether? so many questions

Nice to know that it's free, but I still wouldn't play DDO.

why would you need a second account? just drop the VIP and go F2P..

I played DDO beta back in the day... It was actually pretty good. I'll check this out.

With a guild, or a group of friends, the game is very good. It feels a little like you're actually RPing. I joined a random guild when I played for a month, and it was the best MMO experience I've had since my first week in WoW (let's face it, nothing beats the first week in WoW :P)

Solo however, the game gets boring quick. Quicker than WoW does, because at least WoW has a storyline you can follow, DDO's story is a little disjointed.
