And we thought the Borderlands ESRB rating was f’ing metal. Turbine announced the public launch of Dungeons & Dragons Onlne: Eberron Unlimited in style this morning with the above video. It’s raucous and downright metal, and chances are that your parents just won’t understand it, man.

In case you missed it -- Eberron Unlimited is the “digital upgrade” for DDO that releases players from the shackles of monthly fees. Think of it like a hybrid MMO. DDO gives people the ability to purchase items, as well as the ability to buy into a monthly VIP program. But at its core, it’s free-to-play.

And it’s totally out right now. Have any of you checked it out?

If anyone's given this a try and actually enjoyed it, please let it become known, because this trailer put me to sleep. I'd love to be wrong though.

As a current 4e D&D p&p player, it reminds me a lot of NWN. NWN 1, that is. I played the crap out of that game and it eventually got me back into the hobby. I haven't played any of the D&D videogames since, but I think the move to free play could snag some potential new players and expose possible tabletop players to the game - and the world could use dice rollin' nerds.

Free's nice, but honestly I'm sick to death of high fantasy. Me and my flintlock-toting ghost pirate will stick to Champions for awhile, I think.

Im 30+ I played the Pen and Paper and I played every single video game released under the banner of D&D, most if not all were pretty damn good.
Dungeons and Dragons is more than just a franchise, it is a goddamn institution. A carte blanche and Turbine cant even charge a monthly fee. Shameful.

@ horrorscope,

Not hip to the Turbine/Atari lawsuit? That and the fact the setting is Eberron have a lot to do with that. Honestly, the game is not that bad. It's just so unconventional of what most people expect out of an MMO. I don't play it, because I just don't have room for an MMO in my diet right now, but if I had to play something (while I wait for SW:TOR, anyway).. it'd probably be DDO.

Have you checked out Star Wars Galaxies, while you wait for SW:TOR ?

@horrorscope

Have YOU checked out SW:TOR?

Comparing it too Galaxies is just wrong. Bioware isnt making the mistake of leaving the Roleplaying up to the members...and actually crafting a storyline for each class.

Bioware knows how to make RPGs...so I think its actually worth a look.

As for DDO...Im currently downloading it to see what its like, because Free is Free and you cant pass that up.

I really enjoy DDO, the dungeons are fun, its a little harder to get into than other mmos though.

I love how a DM narrates parts of a quest. But last night, I got disconnected in the middle of the Family Crypt quest and now, I have no way of recollecting the crests needed to open the final door and no way to restart the dungeon state despite trying repeatedly.

I hate the fact that they make you pick a first and last name, but then only seem to decide unique character names based off of the first name. So if I want to give my character a fairly simple first name so it doesn't seem like his parents were pants-on-head retarded, I most likely can't.
It's like some sadistic DM came along and decided that there will be at most one person named James at all times in the world.

I remember playing this for a day, trying out the trial, when I was attempting to quit WoW.

After about 5 hours, I concluded that it sucked hard. Now, it's free? It will probably suck even harder.

The one thing that I really like about DDO:EU is that they've actually incorporated puzzles into some of the things you have to do in regular quests. I hasn't even gotten to lvl 2 in the BETA and had already come across 3 or 4 puzzles. Albeit the puzzles were very similar in design, but each one had a little different twist to it. I love that they actually took the time to put some other kind of content in there besides hunting/gathering & killing mobs.

Magnalon,

You played for 5 hours and concluded that, huh? Strange. I played WoW and DDO for months, and conclude that DDO is far superior to WoW in pretty much every conceivable way. But, to each their own.

Give me an MMO in the Planescape realm and I'll be all over it.
