Day-one buyers of Modern Warfare 2 DLC got a week of LIVE photo

Folks who bought the Modern Warfare 2 "Stimulus Package" DLC for 360 on the day of release are getting a nice surprise from Microsoft: One free week of Live Gold. According to Dtoider GrumpyTurtle, Big M sent out the following message to those who've scored a little extra time to play online:

To thank you for your loyalty to Xbox LIVE and for buying the Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package on day 1, we will extend your Gold membership for 7 days of adrenaline-pumping action with your friends on LIVE. Your account will be updated on May 1.

While I certainly appreciate the gesture, it seems mighty strange that such a thing would just come out of the blue with no fanfare. Maybe I'm getting too cynical in my old age, but I have a hard time picturing Microsoft being able to resist the urge to use even this very minor carrot to try and sell people on a $15 piece of DLC.

[Thanks, GrumpyTurtle!]

There was also a site that was giving away 48hour Gold trials as well, I did that twice so I've got 4 days worth of live to use when I want to get some demos that are only available for gold subscribers.

Seeing as a year of XBL costs about 65 bucks, that means people who bought it first day get a whopping .18 cents worth of XBL. Hell of a deal if you ask me. If anything, it is us that should feel like assholes for nay-saying such a generous company as Activision. :)

Oops. It's closer to a dollar, actually. Curse you simple math!

Wait, so the stimulus package supports Xbox Live instead of Infinity Ward.... ??? How does Microsoft get off making money from a DLC for a game created by IW and published by Activision?

That's how MW2 takes it to the next level... tap some behaviourist psychology by randomly giving "treats" when customers are loyal enough to buy new products before they can be reviewed or get an impression from friends. That'll make for some easy wringing money out of the franchise later.

they gave an extra four months and 400 ms points for shutting down original xbox live...is it just me or is Microsoft in the giving mood this year

On 1-12-10 Sony will be charging for the PSN. If you don't want to have to pay send this message to others. LIKE ASAP!

I get that message from
Time to time and while I don't want to rain on anyone's good time but has this at all been confirmed by Microsoft in any way other than this message?

Just got the message after turning on my 360. Free is free, so that 1 week will give me
time to gather funds to renew Live when it expires. Thanks, MS.

OMG one week you are quite generous Activision thanks for selling us old maps and two crappy maps and a week of live for a quarter the cost of BC2 which gives you free DLC.

Not a bad deal. Certainly better than not giving away free shit with it.

To everyone who is bashing m$ for this. WTF?? They didnt have to give people shit. Maybe this is their way for making up for the map pack not working immediately. Free is free. Quit your bitching:)

while I love bc2 that whole free dlc is a load of shit and you know it. All it is is new game modes on maps you already have. Already on the disc. Oh and if you buy bc2 used you have to pay 1200 m$ points to get the VIP access. Stop being a tool.

"Seeing as a year of XBL costs about 65 bucks..."

$65? Where are you shopping? Even if you buy Live directly from Microsoft it's less than $50 for 12 months, and I've never personally paid more than about $35 per year (Amazon).

You need to shop around, brother!

Assuming most people who purchased the DLC, Play MW2 regularly, and those who play it regularly have to have a gold subscription to play, I'm gonna go ahead and call this one of the worst gestures of "gratitude" ever.

@mrandydixon

My bad. I should have researched it a bit more. :)

I quickly searched for xbl subscription on google and the first link was here: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Live-Month-Gold-Bonus/dp/B000B9RI00

I've been auto-renewing for the past 3 years by credit card so I don't really pay attention to how much it costs anymore.

That doesn't help the value of the offer any though. Now the lucky buyer gets .77 cents worth of XBL. FOR FREE! :)

If you really think about it it's not free because the dlc itself is overpriced making only fools buy this and people really thinkng they're getting a freebie when they really still aren't

This free week is more because Xbox Live had tech issues when the DLC launched, and the people who bought the DLC on Day 1 were affected by that. I believe this comes from Microsoft as a make-good/apology for that technical snafu.

This is a pretty standard move when tech issues cause customers not to be able to use a service; my cable company credits me for days that their service fails, too. Only this time, nobody had to call and complain to get the credit to their account.

I don't see that as the bad thing that you seem to see it as.
