Folks who bought the Modern Warfare 2 "Stimulus Package" DLC for 360 on the day of release are getting a nice surprise from Microsoft: One free week of Live Gold. According to Dtoider GrumpyTurtle, Big M sent out the following message to those who've scored a little extra time to play online:
To thank you for your loyalty to Xbox LIVE and for buying the Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package on day 1, we will extend your Gold membership for 7 days of adrenaline-pumping action with your friends on LIVE. Your account will be updated on May 1.
While I certainly appreciate the gesture, it seems mighty strange that such a thing would just come out of the blue with no fanfare. Maybe I'm getting too cynical in my old age, but I have a hard time picturing Microsoft being able to resist the urge to use even this very minor carrot to try and sell people on a $15 piece of DLC.
[Thanks, GrumpyTurtle!]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
ROFL!
in all honesty its like their trying to overcompensate for having a small package.
I get that message from
Time to time and while I don't want to rain on anyone's good time but has this at all been confirmed by Microsoft in any way other than this message?
time to gather funds to renew Live when it expires. Thanks, MS.
while I love bc2 that whole free dlc is a load of shit and you know it. All it is is new game modes on maps you already have. Already on the disc. Oh and if you buy bc2 used you have to pay 1200 m$ points to get the VIP access. Stop being a tool.
"Seeing as a year of XBL costs about 65 bucks..."
$65? Where are you shopping? Even if you buy Live directly from Microsoft it's less than $50 for 12 months, and I've never personally paid more than about $35 per year (Amazon).
You need to shop around, brother!
My bad. I should have researched it a bit more. :)
I quickly searched for xbl subscription on google and the first link was here: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Live-Month-Gold-Bonus/dp/B000B9RI00
I've been auto-renewing for the past 3 years by credit card so I don't really pay attention to how much it costs anymore.
That doesn't help the value of the offer any though. Now the lucky buyer gets .77 cents worth of XBL. FOR FREE! :)
I definitely agree with you. :) That last bit of my last post was sarcasm.
This is a pretty standard move when tech issues cause customers not to be able to use a service; my cable company credits me for days that their service fails, too. Only this time, nobody had to call and complain to get the credit to their account.
I don't see that as the bad thing that you seem to see it as.
