David Sirlin leaves Backbone Entertainment photo

David Sirlin, a key player at Backbone Entertainment, developers of Street Fighter II HD Turbo Remix, has left the company. He announces his departure with a strange post on his own blog.

We don't know what went down, but he says he'll always be available for patches or updates to Street Fighter HD Remix, so no worries there. Then, he follows this with links to poor review scores of other Backbone titles like Brooktown High or Charlie and the Chocolate factory. What is he trying to say here? Is this a kind of I'm done with this kind of crap statement?

Sirlin says that he's available for hire. Of course he is. He ends his post with copypasta from Backbone's Wikipedia page, and this sentence is highlighted:

One of Backbone's prominent key members is David Sirlin, an arcade game enthusiast known for his involvement in fighting game tournaments, mostly the Super Street Fighter II titles.

He says that he took the "high road," but we think he took the confusing road instead. Sirlin, care to clue us in on why you left? Does it relate to SFIITHDR at all? Who threw the first Hadouken?

I seriously hope that Capcom + Backbone will keep the game patched. Sirlin was the biggest advocate for introducing the new rebalanced mode, and from what we've seen of Backbone.. they don't have the most stellar track record.

"Oh hey, I'm taking the high road, but fuck those guys. They suck and I'm the man."

Meh, I don't really care too much about the behind-the-scenes stuff surrounding this. Playing the game will be far more important, so kudos to Backbone and Sirlin for getting the job done.

Sirlin is a great guy, and he's been a real advocate of fighting games and the fighting game community for a long, long time.

Personally, I wish him the best of luck. Seems like he's a little disgruntled and wanted to go out with a bang, maybe? From his blog, seems like there were some quality control issues.

It sounds like he had beef with Backbone (history of crappy games?), and that the company may take a hit now that he has left (hence the Wikipedia quote).

Kind of a douchey thing to do in my opinion.

Think about what this guy has done. He rebalanced an already incredibly balanced game. In doing so he got a lead designer credit and has been the mouthpiece for the game that a lot of people had their hands in.

Sorry if this seems cynical, but I thought the people who created the game fifteen years ago did an amazing job. Granted, some of the improvements that he has suggested may be for the better, it's not just him. How about the gameplay programmers, the artists at Udon, the people who programmed the network code. His message seems to be a big F U to everyone involved with the project, even if that was his intent or not.

Yeah, Backbone has put out a lot of crap, but I'm sure a lot of the people that were on his team worked on said crap and have a different opinion since ::gasp:: they probably worked on the projects. According to all of the reviews, the game is great. So that tells me that the people who were involved, regardless of their past work, have helped create an amazing game. A game that they deserve just as much credit for as Mr. Sirlin takes for it.
