Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

I've professed my adoration and respect for David Jaffe many, many times. He's honest, outspoken, and usually dead on when it comes to his opinions on the gaming industry -- something he and Destructoid share in common. Such is the case with his latest rant that hits really close to home for a few of us that have been burned by the dickery caused by AOL Joystiq. Excuse me Trey Parker and Matt Stone, but you guys said this best:

See, there's three kinds of people: dicks, pussies, and assholes. Pussies (other video game sites) think everyone can get along, and dicks (Dtoid and Jaffe) just want to fuck all the time without thinking it through. But then you got your assholes (AOL Joystiq), Chuck. And all the assholes want us to shit all over everything! So, pussies may get mad at dicks once in a while, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes, Chuck. And if they didn't fuck the assholes, you know what you'd get? You'd get your dick and your pussy all covered in shit!

Now that I have you in the right frame of mind, take a look at Jaffe's wrath that was unleashed on the worst gaming site on the Internet in response to an unfair and unintelligent post by AOL Joystiq:

Fuck you, guys. Go fuck yourselves. What other developer makes a fucking change to a game when a review (IGN's in this case) has a good, valid point and is willing to open the fucking code up at the risk of more bugs to make the game better? Amazing. But hey, you guys are great, you guys rock. I hope Kotaku fucking puts your ass out of business, wanna be fucktards. And if you were actual journalists you would have read the motherfucking quote I posted on NEOGAF where I said because of the two bugs we needed to fix (not because I was afraid of the bargin bin) we had a window of opp. to fix the magnet problem. Assholes...total fucking assholes.

Read the entire rant after the jump.

[Via Wired

When reached for comment, Ron Workman had this to say:

"I don't see what the big deal is. I've been calling Joystink fucktards for a solid year. It seems to be common knowledge in the industry."

[UPDATE: Joystiq responds:

Dear David (can we call you David? We hope so ...),

We could be very wrong, of course, but we're pretty sure the "unnamed" website that drove you to swear off blogging was (the potentially French) Joystiq, and we think we know why.

First, a discussion on the simile which we presume set you off: "Like a little girl struggling to keep her favorite doll out of the garage sale bin ..." Obviously, neither you nor we have ever been a little girl, but we imagine that it's pretty tough to part with something so dear. A garage sale bin -- though we can see the implications to a "bargain" bin -- is just the most likely way said little girl would be forced to give her precious friend away. Perhaps a better simile would have been, "Like an overprotective mother carting her still-suckling toddler to kindergarten for the first time," ... actually, you know what? Let's just forget about the similes for now and concentrate on what else we wrote.

Before we scribble out "game journalist" from our photocopied business cards, we would like to note that we did read your post on NeoGAF and linked it. Twice. In fact, our entire post was written in response to yours, mentioning the rationale for postponing the game in the very first sentence: "to make some fixes and revise some of the criticisms." The entire second paragraph addresses those bug fixes, quotes your post on NeoGAF (see, told you we read it!) and then closes with a hopeful comment on the delay's reception (much like your post does).

Now, we could take umbrage with your misreading of our post; we could point out the irony of you criticizing our lack of reading and research; we could even point out the irony of you misinterpreting our "little girl" simile and acting out like ... well, let's just forget about all that. We don't want to keep fighting! We just want to tell you that we like your candor, always have. In fact, in looking back at all that we've said about you and your projects, we found it to be overwhelmingly positive (shared with you below). In short, don't give up blogging. And definitely don't give up blogging over a simple misunderstanding! The industry needs more candid developers eager to address their fans and critics alike, not one less.

Love,

The #!*?tards Your pals at Joystiq]

Awesome:

THAT'S IT FOR NOW...SEE YOU SOON.

Well the last few posts have caused more of a stir than I had hoped. One day I will learn my lesson: that people don't read the whole post, hell people don't tend to read the post at all, but rather a truncated version of the post posted on another website with just the part of the post that is inflamitory enough to get the haters in a tizzy and get hits on the site(s) in question.

But that's ok; I mean, it's the net right? You take the good with the bad; and I've had a hell of a lot of good from it and for that- as well as for the bad- I am grateful.

But for the time being, I'm going to go dark. My stylings have upset some folks within the biz I care very much about and that I can not live with. For me, it's always been silly, stupid fun...you know, giving what I get, talking like alot of folks on geeky message boards do, trash talking, etc. But I guess some folks have taken it to heart and that's not cool for me. End of the day, even the folks who spew much venom my way, I probably would like very much in real life. As I've said before, we're all geeks and if you can't get along with a fellow geek, then what's the point.

Anyway, so CAC is coming out...soon? I dunno. It's done, so I'm just waiting now for the official word. I'm sure you'll see the press release when Sony lets it out. But I will be playing online for sure, so hope to see you guys in the game!

But you know, I gotta get off a final parting shot before I go:

TO THE LAME ASS WEBSITE THAT SHALL GO UNNAMED- Fuck you, guys.

Ok, that's it. I will be back soon with an announcement and the next stage of this blog (and my life!) I'll post the news- assuming it all happens as planed...you never know- sometime this summer. I'll keep ya'll posted as the blog will remain open. Nothing set in stone, but the hope is to let you guys know what is up sometime in July.

Take it easy, have a GREAT first part of the summer. I will miss you guys!

David

ps. oh and JUST to make it CLEAR since it doesn't seem to be: I like GAMESPOT, have respect for them, always have. Hell I pay for the damn thing every year. I don't agree with the review but I've always dug the folks over there and continue to do so. Hope they will like our next game alot more!

I switched because of Summa. And no, not because of the Wii-haterade or anything in particular. I just believe that Joystiq was ultimately to blame for their overhyping his story.

Joystiq and I had kinda grown apart by then anyway, seeing as how it was starting to feel like the GameFAQ's boards of gaming blogs.

I came to d'toid out of Joystiq's lack of professional courtesy and the unsound dictum of Joystiq in publicly firing Summa.

Since then, I have posted on Joystiq twice, and have rarely read the site at all compared to the constant F5'ing I do around here...

Good job on Jaffe for calling out 'stiq's shitty op-eds and news aggregation.

Summa, you got fired for a perfectly legitimate reason (Hell, I know you kept me up that night for news that chips were in production for the Wii, which meant absolutely nothing.), and yet you continue to bash them every chance you get when they've been the adults in the situation and have never mentioned you once. You turn into more of an immature douchebag every single day. Jaffe is just as bad, he's a whiny bitch who couldn't take the criticism that one gaming site had about his game so he causes a big stir about it.

I love Destructoid, I love the community, Niero, Ron and Fronz are awesome (I know you guys all hate Joystiq, but I can't think of a single thing they've done, outside of firing Summa, to warrant it.).

I really, really hope you do leave because Destructoid will become infinitely better without your childish behavior.

@Niero: I've played Mickey Mousecapade. I don't think Minnie was invincible. In the second stage I remember jumping over the waves but she would not quite make it sometimes. She's such a pain in the ass...

I guess the overall message I got from that game was, "can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em."

What? summa should get fired.. guys lets calm down for a second ok?

1.-This is an actual news worthy note, not something that Summa just pulled out of his butt to make the day ok?

2.-Misunderstanding or not, Jaffe (probably the most famous game director/designer in the US) sent Joystick to go and F! themselves over some review/ post (I mean, seriously!)

3.-Most of you guys hate Summa because he is not a Nintendo fan (admit it!) I mean seriously people you want destructoid to go the "digg/kotaku" way and praise almighty Nintendo at their every move? and ban any history which may irritate lord Mario? believe me this place wouldnt be half as much FUN without Summa.

Besides: JSTFUAJPG!

Rob... you come across as really, really petty here.

We all know Joystiq fired you. Some of us, myself included, thought it was probably a bad decision and overreacting. Now I'm not so certain.
Seems like a bit of an inferiority complex, it isn't becoming, and it hurts the credibility of what is usually a pretty strong, reliable site.

Jaffe, as per always, is coming across as a guy desperate to be seen as anything other than a nerd. Will Wright is happy being a nerd. Sid Meier is happy being a nerd. John Carmack is happy being a nerd. Everyone at Valve is happy being nerds. We love them for it. John Romero was unhappy being a nerd and pretended to be something else. We hate him for it. Cliffy B was unhappy being a nerd and pretended to be something else. We hated him, too, but he's recently accepted his nerdiness.

Jaffe should be equally hated. Guy's a nerd. We love nerds. We hate nerds that try to force cool.

Yeah, not even close. Call me when he starts getting his name above not only games that he's designed, but games other people design.

Right now even American McGee is riding higher than Dave Jaffe, not to mention (as I already have) Carmack, Will Wright, Sid Meier, etc.

MosquitoControl: Ok "one of the most famous" is that ok with you.

I still fail to see why is this Summa's fault? this is not his article its a news post. and most of it is Jaffe's words.

Also:
Geek!=NERD, Most of us are Geeks but not Nerds. Geeks are freaky guys that know almost everything about a subject (computers, coding, games, movies) to an obsessive point, but are otherwise normal, Nerds are guys who cheerish all knowledge over EVERYTHING else including their own appearence and friends.

Geeks ARE cool.

Azrael, he's a nerd. Carmack is a nerd. Will Wright is the definition of nerd.

But Jaffe is also a tool. The others aren't tools.

And no, this is Summa's post. He goes off on an anti-joystiq tirade. It's petty. It's immature. It's classless. It's boring and predictable. Before reading the post I knew who made it. Had anyone else made it the post would have been odd and easily glossed over as simply wishing Destructoid got the press and hits Joystiq does. Instead it comes off as much beyond that.

Pathetic, really. Like a scorned, dumped boyfriend making baseless, pathetic claims of his now-ex girlfriend being a whore.

@poetic justice:

It's what, a year and a half later? Two years later? Shouldn't Summa be sitting around thinking about how being fired was the best thing that ever happened to him as it led him to Destructoid? Or is he hung up on it because his situation was better over there?

I don't know the answer to that, I know very little about Destructoid v. Joystiq, but Summa certainly makes me think one is a lesser operation.

Furthermore, the forums seem to indicate that Summa is thinking about leaving. As a gaming blogger, I'd imagine he'd hope to get a job in the industry. Any potential employer that sees this would likely ignore him on this alone.
Let's say Bungie needs a new podcaster. They see Summa does this, and think about welcoming him into their fold. Then they see this post, they see the venom he has against a previous employer. They realize Summa wouldn't stay with them forever, and wonder what kind of treatment they'd get from him after he leaves their employ.

Burning bridges, particularly publically, is not a good way to get another job.

Azrael, I've been a reader occasionally, never bothered to register. I don't often have time for multiple conversations, and everything here is on Joystiq, everything on Joystiq is on Kotaku, etc.

I don't see how "newbness" for posting alters anything I've said.

I only decided to get vocal because it's pathetic. You never see Joystiq bash Kotaku. You never see Kotaku bash Destructoid. They might jest a bit, but never a desperate slap in the face.

All I'm going to say is goof troop on the snes was a fucking awesome game. Therefore 16-bit disney > 8-bit disney.

The way this thread is going doesn't really reflect that well on destructoid, especially given how reasonable joystiq are being about the whole situation. The bashing was amusing at first, but some of you folks need to stop taking all this so seriously.

Dave Jaffe almost always comes across as an insufferable cunt, quite frankly. That's not to say that he sometimes doesn't have good reason to get angry, but just because he has free reign to lash out like an asshole doesn't mean that he ought to jump on the opportunity every time it's presented to him.

Dave is reasonably talented when it comes to making games. I think very few would argue that point. However, when he takes it upon himself to get bent out of shape and act like a miserable douche bag, doing things such as crying foul over a reviewers opinion and generally acting out like a child who's just been scolded for stealing a cookie from the cookie jar, he makes baby Jesus cry.

He ought to stop letting the sycophants amongst his fan base convince him that his childish ranting is an awesome thing, and turn that anger management problem he has into something productive. His ranting is not smart, it's not funny, and above all it's just not interesting. Frankly, I think that it's a bit pathetic, and it paints the picture of him as a douche bag who believes that he's above criticism, even while telling everyone who'll give him the time of day what he things about a number of things that nobody wants to hear from him about.

He's a damned game developer. I couldn't care less what he has to say about pretty-much anything. I'll play his games, but I don't want to hear about what he has to say about anything, ever.

As for this incident, who the shit cares? Whether Joystiq screwed up or not, Jaffe came across yet again as a world class dick. Bravo, I guess.
