Dave Perry's Twitter is dropping PSP 2 hints [Update] photo

In our day to day operations, we come across a lot of stuff that we debate on running. We get a lot of crap tips, sure, but even some legit ones have us shrugging our shoulders, or in this case, rolling our eyes.

So all morning we've been talking about Dave Perry's (Shiny, Earthworm Jim) tweet, which read:

I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they've removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I'm excited!

My response? What a dick thing to bait us about! In some ways, that's worse than the name dropper guys on Twitter. I mean, Twitter is great for telling people that you "just landed at SFO" or that you "just took the biggest dump ever," but it does nothing to aggravate when you want more than 140 characters.

We're not sure who his sources are, though. And maybe he doesn't know any more than that. But you can't just drop a tweet like that and not expect people to want more.

If true, this is great news. Sony would be cutting the path to cutting retail completely out of the equation. Nice. But for now, we've used the "rumor" tag. Not that we don't trust you, Perry.

But this PSP2 news puzzles after hearing about this PSP 4000 lately. Which is it? Both? Sony, if you're wanting to sell PSPs right now, these hints at new systems and refreshes are not helping you.

[Update: Perry swears it's true! He tells GameDaily that "you can be certain there's no UMD" and that "you know I know people." What a pimp.]

Hmmmm...so no UMD drive would mean no playing PSP games you already bought on the system. Which really makes it a new handheld altogether and not just a redesign, as we'd previously heard it billed as.

Not that I'm complaining since I never really bought games for mine. It's amazing enough as an emulator for older systems...playing NES on the go is awesome.

So if this is true than all the PSP games I've purchased will be worthless?

Awesome.

Also I never understood what the big deal is about twitter. Anyone wanna clarify me on this?

the psp was released in japan back in 2004, and at that time flash memory prices were very high.

lol, if indeed this is dealing with the PSP2 and the PSP-4000 is indeed completely unrelated, go Sony for shooting yourself in the foot again! What's next PS5 details emerging the month before the PS4?

@akathatoneguy:

I think sony's finally taking a tip from MS (and nintendo, now that I think about it); why have backward compatibility, when they can re-release the games you already own and charge a fee to download them?

If this means no PSP support, then I'll get kinda sad. There's a few PSP games I want to play, but I don't want to buy a PSP.

I think taking out disc support is a bad idea, actually.

I'm fine with downloadable games, but what happens years from now if we can't download anymore if the servers are down for good? No more game playing? I'm not good with that.

I doubt it will actually play out like that. I think Sony have invested too much in UMD, to ditch it so quickly. While the PS2 is on its last legs, PSP also gives them an chance to maintain tech that can still do a lot.

If a PSP2 were in development, I think it'd be more of a response to a remixed DS and the slowly rising iPhone/touch. I'd expect to see it out in 2010, as Sony don't want to get caught out again.

If Sony know what's good for them, improved UMD and download support should both be onboard at launch (maybe even make it open source). Then they'll be ready to match Nintendo and Apple.

Well, it IS feasible that the PSP-4000 won't have the UMD drive.

I mean, it could come with like 2gb of memory or somesuch and Sony could expand it's online PSP store to offer many of the System's Library of games for DL.

Future titles could then be released to stores at reguular price and via DL for like $5 off.

Well if Dave Perry is right, it'll prove an interesting buy, as I expect it'll have either a mini hard drive like an iPod, or a certain amount of flash memory.

I'd rather have a mini hard drive in it. This would allow us to download game for a price. Thing is though, the main reason I want a UMD format to continue, is because I like buying import games for my PSP. If PSP2 goes fully digital, with no backwards compatibility, it could be a sad end for import gamers like myself. I just hope if they do this, original PSP support continues.

Alternatively, Sony could just sell the games on specific memory cards (similar to DS in a way), and still have a retail option for us all. This I would prefer, than a fully download model, because I still want my games to play and add to my physical collection.

You think Sony are gonna offer games for $5, Dinner? Highly unlikely.

No, Dinner meant $5 off, as in...reduced price.

I personally don't care since I have a PSP and I'm happy with it. If it's a 4000, it can't be drastically different, not to mention that UMD games will still come out so there will have to be some way for people to still play those, right?
