A few weeks back, we spotted a GameStop listing for a standalone 250 GB hard drive for the Xbox 360. At the time, Microsoft told us "We have nothing to announce at this time."
Well, how about now? Because an advertisement for the standalone hard drive popped up on the Xbox 360 Dashboard. No pricing was confirmed, but it should be noted that the GameStop listing (which has since been pulled) had it priced at a $129.99.
Microsoft hasn't made this official yet, so we'll let you know when they do, but I'd say this one's pretty much a lock.
Standalone Xbox 250GB HDD confirmed by Dashboard [Joystiq]
[Update: It's official, and yes, it's $129.99 and it comes with a transfer cable.]

Microshaft's "mug tax" is a cunt eh.
Mug's will be mugs, and Microshat will keep muggin' em.
"cant you open up a 360 harddrive and put any old harddrive inside it? or did i get some bum scoop"
Yes, I have friends who have popped open their 20 gig case and replaced it with a 500 gig. Never tried it myself, but I hear it's pretty simple. (My friends are not exactly what you would call "tech savvy".)
Then again, I remember reading something a while back about Microsoft banning 360s with "illegal" hard drives. Don't know if that ever happened or if it was just a scare tactic.
You used to be able to. Now they're blocking them out although I hear it's possible to work around it. After all that trouble I could probably work up $120.
I've been living alright with my 20GB drive (only installing the game I'm actively playing at the moment), so another 16 or 32GB would be plenty, and I can just use my external drive that a)Costs less than the 360 HD, b)Has 4 times as much capacity, and c)Can be used on my PC as well.
You're a genius.
@mrandydixon and @WhiteZombie:
I didn't realize you could that... So you can take one of MS's goofy hard drives that plugs into the top of your 360 and open it up and put another hard drive inside it? Whacky.
They aren't blocking or banning them; I bought my HDD from Hong Kong for super cheap (which pretty much means they put a laptop hdd in a case) and I've had no problems yet. The only downside is, since the system somehow knows it isn't certified microsoft, you can't play original Xbox games on it.
Oh well.
Just upgrade it yourself and stop complaining about price.
If your PS3 is laughing, it is therefore sentient and you should throw it in a molten pit now, or face the consequences of its self-awareness developing into a hatred for humanity, thus spelling Judgement Day.
At least, that's what the Terminator movies told me you should do.
So, yeh, 250 GB on 360 is far more than 500 GB on PS3.
PSN = Skynet.
(there's actually a european defense system irl called skynet - what kind of dick picked that name?)
@videodrone, gutted mate! If it's a slim it's gotta be pretty new and under warantee right?
...Then again, I could always just delete my Rock Band 2 install and get a nice 13 gigs back. I'm sure it doesn't really do much to help load times anyways.
No it doesn't.
You're right about the load times, but man does it decrease noise! I install every game I play for this reason alone.
@superjay779
My slim's still alive and kicking, but it makes a nasty racket whenever I try to play a DVD movie. Probably Sony telling me to buy Blu-Rays instead?
I think I play everything too loud to notice.
That's a little unexpected.
i bought one of these off of ebay... when i got it in the mail it had all the proper M$ stickers on it, except they were affixed a little off. hasn't given me trouble and i've been going hard on my 360 for about a month now. it only cost me ten more dollars than my 250gb PS3 hdd, so i'm pretty happy.
...............I love my perfectly quite no powerbrick having blu ray playing wi-fi included dream beauty that is PS3. life is good, oh yeah did I mention that i have a PC so I can play all the games I'm missing. aaaaaaahhhhhhh, wait I'm sorry I was day dreaming for a second.
I know it's business, and I know that it's all in the name of profit margin at the end of the day, but thr outright walletrape of a consumer base has already crossed the line from "annoying and insulting" to "blantant assholery."
Also, do you really think that Sony isn't considering this? The "Me Too" stance taken by all three major players this gen really saddens me. Motion control, online gameplay, DLC, HDDs, avatars, Netflix...can't anyone (everyone?) just have one unique factor without aping the company you're trying to "beat?"
