But not crediting someone is bullshit.
Having stayed up a few nights to work crazy hours on a game, I know how shitty it can be. I hope gamers will make their voice (or money...) heard to say that they don't approve that type of bullshit.
There are some broken things about it for sure. I'm not saying that this is one of those instances (I don't believe it is) but many people just are not prepared to work in the game industry. It's long hours and lots of work. There is a product, and a delivery date. If you get your work done, you go home. If you didn't get your work done, well, you gotta pull 14 hour days till it's done. No exceptions.
"Developers don't just let talented people go without a valid reason."
I don't agree with that one. It not uncommon for a developper to manage employess poorly. Hiring a lot of people when "things are going well", and then doing massive layoffs when the road is a bit more bumpy. I saw massive layoffs, and those fired weren't only good-for-nothings (a lot of them moved from their country to work there, only to be fired 3-4 months later...)
LOL. Stay away from a game because one douche tweets he had to work hard? Aren't you a hero for not supporting a game because of one guys dramatic story.
Lots of people work hard, and get screwed over. It happens in every job, everywhere. You may as well ban everything and die starving ya dummy.
This, however, just makes it worse and makes me even less inclined to invest in a THQ game in the future. I mean, sure, its the same old story with any big business that you get shit on like this after all your hard work, but it goes on to prove that small business and indies are where the better work is.
Just... drop it dude.
I'm speaking from experience, this does not sound unrealistic at all. Still, I agree, best to hear both sides. Tho, hearing this guy's side makes me more hesitant to pick the game up until I know more.
@DanielCampbell
The other side of the coin is that studios can only expect to squeeze their employees so much to make deadlines. Yeah, it's a lot of work even in the best cases, yeah you're going to pull long hours now and then, but some studios handle development so poorly and its the employees who get shafted with 14 hour days throughout nearly all of production, not because they're not working hard enough but because they've been saddled with criminally unrealistic deadlines and workloads.
Amazing game otherwise though :-)
Feel terrible for this guy. Such shitty practice on THQ/Vigil's ends.
This makes me just a little more glad I bought Sleeping Dogs over Darksiders II. When I do buy it, it'll most likely be used after this shit.
Maybe he could have read his contract carefully and rejected the job if he hadn't been that desperate to get into "triple-A" work?
Staying silent and pretending shit like this doesn't happen fixes nothing. Ever heard the phrase "Silence implies consent," before?
It's also cute that you're presuming that he would want to go back to working in that kind of job environment, when there are many other opportunities elsewhere that don't result in horror stories like his.
Some people seem to forget that we don't actually live in that "ideal world" of doing the smart thing or the right thing. Talented people have gotten fired and will continue to get fired for idiotic and petty reasons, in spite of what talent they have. The ones who typically don't have to worry about that are the ones who are much more prominent in the public eye, such as Ken Levine or Cliffy B. But when you're just another name on the roster, it sometimes means that in spite of all you bring to the table, the boss's buddy who has no experience ends up getting your job because he asked for it.
That's all I'm saying.
This entitled prick is so mad that his name isn't in the credits when his ACTUAL WORK might not have made it into the final game. You worked there for a month while the rest of the team was there for years.
He can still put his work in his portfolio. I usually don't get credited on the work I do either, but it all goes into my portfolio.
Add cocaine to the mix, and you have the perfect soul-destroying-for-the-money situation.
I am SO glad I didn't pursue a career in digital media!
I don't know the situation in which he was fired, but I'm sure a lot of good people were let do during THQ's restructuring. It sucks, but it happens. However, Xander took to Twitter to bash THQ for months afterwards. Check his Twitter feed. Check the Yahoo Financial forums where his tweets were discussed months ago.
@sluntchop He said 90% of the UI he built was in the final product...I cant trust anything else you typed because you clearly couldnt even read a fucking article correctly.
Seriously, while it does suck. Why would they go through multiple guys if the work was good? Something is fishy. I do quick jobs for songs people hand me without credit, but I do a good job and they usually ask me to do more songs.
This definitely sounds like a partial story if I've ever heard one.
For instance, you could say the same thing about the proverbial glass ceiling that women have had to contend with for years, and still continue to contend with. Should they just accept it because, after all, the reality is that they're just women in a man's world? Hey, it's shitty, but they better not say anything lest they ruin their future opportunities, right?
You're such an apologist for everything that it's kind of creepy.
He said it was "derivative' of his work. That could mean they put a skull in the same spot, thus derivative of his work. It really means nothing unless he has evidence of what work he put in himself.
I know I want to see a Darksiders 3 in the future, and bullcrap like this that stops people from buying it just makes matters worse.
