I will be getting this on release day.
In other news, our former Destructoid writers Hollie Bennett is busy on the forums reassuring gamers that she's making sure people are aware of our general dislike of GFWL.
... I miss Hollie... And Burch. And Brad.
Honestly, I think Microsoft primarily sees Windows, its OWN FUCKING OS, as a competitor for Xbox. They can't control the Windows platform like they can control Xbox, and they aren't smart enough to leverage their unique strengths (like, you know, CREATING THE FUCKING OS) to compete with companies one hundredth of their size (Steam/Valve). As a result, it seems like they actively discourage Windows from being a gaming platform. Luckily for us, they aren't terribly successful. GFWL sucks total ass. XBLA exclusives (and a fair number of Xbox retail exclusives) almost never make it to the PC. Other than that, they just stay away.
I write this http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=30342428 (or http://en.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?/topic/29171-why-not-use-all-the-steamworks-features/) and BOOM the steam cloud support for witcher 2 on steam is working and available. I say that GFWL is an understandable choice but wish that Namco wouldn't use it in the other dtoid post, and here we have it -_-
okay, now i'll complain that i don't have a job in game development, my good ideas are never getting realised and i never won at lottery. :3
Just a thought from an impartial observer.
be fucking GLAD they even consider porting this game on PC in the first place.
and yeah From Software NEVER said this will be a GFWL only so shut your mouths and wait for announcements.
for those who are complaining about lack of graphical options. from software said to WAIT for announcements to come.
they are porting this games THEMSELVES not even outsourcing it to a PC developer. so this will be handled carefully just like CD Projekt did with the The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition.
the game is not even OUT yet and the amount of bitching is just absurd and sad.
i wonder what Hidetaka Miyazaki feels about this.
"no steam" wahhhh
"no 3D" wahhhh
"the keyboard controls sucks" wahhh
"no dedicated servers" wahhhh
"no mods" wahhh
my god such crybabies.
They did say it was likely, and the main reason this isn't true now.. is because people were complaining. Hell, the only reason this is coming to PC at all is because people kept talking about it.
So, if anything, don't shut your mouths. Open your mouths and complain! From is listening!
In any case, GFWL is a total abomination. It is definitely worth complaining about. In fact, I'm not really sure what you're complaining about PrinceHeir. It seems like you just wanted some reason to seem uppity and cooler than people.
Hell, I'm typically against excessive complaining myself, but I don't think I've ever suggested that people should just shut up and be glad anyone is charitable enough to make games in the first place. That's just... kinda ridiculous.
::Bro-fist::
I think is actually an instance of consumers assisting the Developer and Publisher. I mean look here if they are willing to listen then great everyone wins and if they do not listen then nothing is truly lost except the time it took to write: "I think you guys should reconsider for so and so reasons".
Consumers want a good product and the makers want us to buy it. Any chance either side can increase the chances of both is at least worth considering.

the thing that grinds my gears is that the game is not even OUT yet and people are now complaining to no end how this game will be handled poorly, or i won't buy this game if it doesn't have steam support.
can't some people(NOT talking anyone here) at least just wait for some further announcements??
maybe they have other more features well beyond the announcements(heck they might have even more future DLC well beyond after it's release)
OK i might have gone overboard of telling people to shut up. i am truly sorry and i hope you forgive me and i meant no harm to you, but people should definitely be a little more patient since the game is in august which is 4 more months away.
if people found any problems with the game or service and such they could always write an open letter or feedback from From Software like "okay look i have multiple problems with GFLW can you at least put it on other services, or the controls in the keyboard seems unresponsive can you fix this on the next patch and so on"
instead of "meh i'll boycott this" "no steam no buy" "no mods or dedicated servers wtf"
Maybe they can get me Dark Souls Steam support as well. Heck, options aren't bad -- where's the nearest petition? :D
All those other "wahhhs" aside, the GFWL point is valid.
PC gamers have wanted this for a while, and if you include Demon's Souls even longer.
I think in the GFWL case it's more a point of wanting the game's online features (a large part of the experience) to actually be GOOD.
I play GFWL games and periodically get disconnected in the middle of them. I've never finished DOW2 or Chaos Rising because I tried playing them co-op with my brother and it would randomly disconnect both of us during missions (varied not simultaneosly) and we'd have to restart. Retribution using Steamworks was a godsend.
While playing Arkham City, GFWL will randomly inform me I've been signed out, not a problem at all in a single player only game but shows that the experience isn't localized to DOW2.
Red Faction: Guerilla does it across SP and MP. Kane and Lynch is another. There are more but you get the point.
Not to say everyone experiences these issues, and that these issues are the only ones in existence, and not to say the GFWL doesn't work fine for some but I think that the experiences are too varied to risk putting a game with these kinds of online features on their servers when Steamworks is just so much more consistent.
not me. i think both groups of whiners are equally pathetic.
it's one thing to petition to get a game on your platform of choice. that's a good thing to do - "hey developer, we love your game so much we'd like to buy it on our platform!". it's quite another to have your request granted, then to constantly complain about every little thing - "hey developer, i'm a whiny ingrate, i can't believe you were dumb enough to think you were good enough for my platform. why don't you just go home, i don't even want your stupid game anyway."
It just seems like a bit of a slap in the face considering we asked for something, they give it to us, and then we complain that they didn't give it to us even better.
Plus considering Namco Bandai and FromSoftware almost never do PC games, to a certain degree we should be happy this exists at all.
I think the unfortunately thing is that the petition against GFWL was a bit too strongly worded. I made jokes about the whole "feels like a slap in the face" thing at the time, but in all seriousness, that is putting it a bit too harshly. I don't think most of the people that are speaking out against GFWL feel insulted or personally slighted in anyway, they just care about the game and want it to be as good as it can be, and I think anyone would have a hard time arguing that the inclusion of GFWL is consistent with making the game as good as it can be.
Point being, there absolutely are times when I feel it's right to speak against gaming histrionics. I do it frequently. This is not one of those times, though. These people are, by and large, being admirably respectful and have a very valid point. I'm not really that interested in this game myself, but I wish these people luck in seeing this port get made the right way. They're doing it right.
"I really don't understand you guys taking the attitude that we should just shut up and be glad we're getting anything at all, even if it is a steaming load."
saying dark souls for PC is "a steaming load" because it might use GFWL is just so pathetic i have no words. nobody is saying we shouldn't complain about anything, we're saying have some fucking perspective and be thankful we're getting the game at all.
oh and yes, the developer may well just say "fuck it" and abandon developing for PC if gamers constantly hound them. they've done fine without developing for PC in the past, if gamers make it a bad experience for them then why should they bother?
And that's a silly thing to say. No one is doing you any favors by making you games you can pay for and play. I mean hell, lets be careful not to complain about DLC and online passes either or other developers might take their ball and go home too! Lets just calmly and politely take whatever we're offered so the nice men will keep selling us video games!
Come on dude. Don't be dense. These people have a right to point out things they don't like, and I assure you, game developers are publishers are big boys and girls. They can take it. They won't cry and run away and stop making games.
We are the customers. Not them. If they make gaming a bad experience for US, why should we buy it? They're the ones trying to get our money. Jesus man, it's like I'm in Bizarro world or something.
As a PC gamer, I am very happy this is coming to PC. Even with GFWL, I'm happy lots of people will experience the series when they couldn't before. Still, that said, PC gamers have access to lots of great games, many of which are exclusives. I'm not going to bow down and proclaim this game FANTASTIC regardless of real issues just because they deigned to bring the game to PC. Beggars can't be choosers, but this ain't 2007 or 2008 anymore. The PC is alive again. I'm very much in place to choose.
and good riddance. you don't provide good product and service, people don't buy it. that's how market works ideally.
i can always play Dark Souls on PS3 if i want. the game is there, done great. it's a great product and a great service. people asked the developers and publishers to make it *even better* and release it on PC. If they do it right, they win money, longevity for the product and respect, which, in PC gaming digital distribution world, means more than PR bullshit. If they don't, their loss. It just a damn shame if they screw it up, this game deserves a good release and long life.
BUT HEY AT LEAST THEY WERE NICE ENOUGH TO PORT THE GAME TO PC THANKS SO MUCH, HERE'S MY MONEY!
Now Dark Souls won't be anywhere near as extreme as that, and even though they give reasons for maybe using GFWL here, it's still a stupid decision. It will prevent me (due to reasons detailed in my previous post) and many others from even bothering to purchase this game, which last time I checked probably isn't a good thing.
is it really that black and white to you? not so long ago we were the ones trying to get their game.
i'm not stupid, i realise they are going ahead with the port because they think they stand a good chance of making money from it, but when people start saying the game is "no longer a day one purchase" or "nah i think i'll pass" that gamble starts looking less likely to pay off. so their options are to make a bigger investment to write and test new netcode etc (which may be even worse than the code they know works) or to cut what are currently minimal losses and move on.
i almost hope they cancel the game just to see the tears that would evoke, however personally i'm happy to let From have a go at PC development without whining like a bitch.
On the other hand, I think people should be less obnoxious about how they protest. I think it's worth *preferring* Steam over GFWL, and telling the developer that. But what I'm seeing is a hostile, ungrateful attitude. It's this kind of thing that turns some developers away from PC. If I was them I would be frustrated, "wtf do we have to do to satisfy these people?!"
We asked them for a *port* of the game, and it sounds like they are doing a decent job of it. It was NOT designed for PC to begin with, so you can't expect higher quality textures, for example, even *exist* to be used. And from a practical standpoint GFWL may just work better for the game as it is designed. They are going out of their way to port this game because we asked for it, and may not have a lot of resources for doing so. FFS people, show some freaking gratitude.
Also my only experience with GFWL is with the PC ports of SFIV (and LP2), which are all quite excellent. I don't know why Capcom can use it right and everyone else fucks up.
not a good gamble at all and that is *exactly* what this "whining" is supposed to be about - telling the developers and publishers that their recent decision might hurt them, so they can rethink their strategy beforehand.
I mean, come on. This is PC gaming world, digital distribution world, instant karma to the developers world, "we know everything that happens in seconds after it happened" world. It's not some people walking into a game store and being told what they should buy by ads and managers. It's people going to the distribution service they use, quickly looking up all the players' reviews, professional reviews, checking on DRM and additional services the game might use, looking at the price, considering everything mentioned above and THEN buying or not buying the game.
Yes, I'll shed tears over a video game. Because it's a video game, which is serious. It's not like I can just play the 360 version I've had since day-one or anything.
My life isn't as sad as yours, dude.
Wow. See, this is what I'm talking about, right here. Gratitude, really? We should be grateful that someone is trying to sell us something? I mean, hell, I love games at least as much as the next guy but you'll never catch me walking into a game store with my bowl outstretched like Oliver Twist saying "please sir, may I have a PC port?"
If it's a good game, people will buy it. If it's not, they won't. Very few people are going to buy this game out of any sense of duty or gratitude, and no one should.
If the choice is between a shit port and nothing, I'm not sure that the shit port is that much of a better option. Keep in mind, I'm not -saying- it's going to be a shit port. I still think this could be good, and I could very well double dip for it (despite already owning it on PS3). However, GFWL is absolute shit. If they'll avoid that stumbling block, it'll make for a much better experience and, honestly, it'll result in more profit for them as well. The PC isn't like the 360 or PS3. The fanbase is much stronger. Bad choices have real consequences.
So, yeah. If it as a choice between shit port or no port, I don't have a strong preference. I wouldn't buy a shit port anyway. If it's between a shit port, bitching about GFWL and hopefully getting a good port, and nothing, obviously, I choose the middle category. Sorry if that's too much for you.
But but but you ordered the food (aka, asked for a PC port)! Therefore, you have to eat every little nugget of crap and filth on the plate without complaining or saying anything! If you complain, you'll probably starve to death and burn down the restaurant!
Oh what's that? That's stupid and/or insane? Sorry, Psycho Terror 2 must've taken over my mind or something.
