Dante's Inferno gameplay footage looks hotter than, uh, hell photo

GameTrailers TV went Dante's Inferno crazy last night in its latest episode. The crew headed down to Electronic Arts' Redwood Shores offices, home of the game's developer Visceral Studios, and came back with the first look at the game in action.

I had a chance to play a good deal of Dante's Inferno when I visited Visceral in May, and while it was early, it showed a lot of promise to be a kick ass, third-person action experience. Meanwhile, a lot of you are too stuck on how it will adapt the revered source material to really grasp that; to an extent, I understand your hesitation. Maybe now, after you see this gameplay, some of you will get it; Dante's Inferno might be -- wait for it -- a lot of fun. Even if it doesn't take its gameplay in any particularly new directions or break down some non-existent literary-to-game-adaptations barrier.

Speaking with the game's Executive Producer Jonathan Knight, I got the sense that he probably knew a hell of a lot more about Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy than most people (yeah, that probably includes you). And being familiar with the material, intends to bring many of themes found in the poetry to the game's narrative. But above all, along with the rest of the team, the idea is to make an entertaining action title. It looks like they're headed in the right direction.

So hit the jump for some of the first footage, which features bits and pieces of one of the game's early and memorable boss "boss" battles with King Minos, judge of souls (shown above). If you're a fan of third-person action titles like Devil May Cry or God of War, can you honestly say this doesn't look like fun?

I'm in.

Just keep making neat demons and decent gameplay and you've got my vote.

So... this game is about killing demons with a scythe? ... Ninja Gaiden 2?... somebody?

If this ends up being like Dead Space in that it is a solid effort that is entertaining and enjoyable despite not breaking new ground then I will look forward to it. The footage looks pretty cool. At least Dante's body is proportioned right, I do get sick of these tree-trunk legged dudes with barrel torsos and mini-heads.

Hopefully the game is demonic and chalked full of satanic references.

This is the absolute worse game of the year. Not because it will be bad, I'm sure that it will be fine, but it feels like they're just shooting for the bottom of the barrel.

The gameplay looks good. The visual design looks great. I wonder how they'll choose to represent Lucifer (http://www.online-literature.com/dante/inferno/34/).

Is it screwed up if I'm only buying this for the Lust level? Seriously I probably won't even play the game for a month. I purely want to support tits and ass in games. Especially when done right, which they appear to have done.

How much tits and ass do you think there is going to be though? Given that lust is sexual in nature, the actual ideology behind lust is more about indulging in one's every desire to the point of insanity and violence as opposed to just enjoying sex.

I'm sure it will be a fun game. I just wish that they would take more advantage of the source material.

Man, there are so many games in this genre around the corner and I will play them all, but only one will ultimately be victorious.

Header image reminds me of Davy Jones's crew in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

This game is going to be awesome. You doubters should judge it on its own merits, not God of Wars.

Still not sold on the "go to hell" catch phrase but it looks damn awesome to me so far.

too many ppl are doing the GOW comparison- I don't think it is fair in the same way SR2 was compared so much to GTA and prototype to infamous- all of the games stand up on their own w/o comparisons and should be treated that way- this will prolly be in the same boat- it prolly won't sell as much as GOW and will be compared (as it is already being) endlessly and unnecessarily
