Dante's Inferno dev making Jack the Ripper game photo

Not content to murder literature with Dante's Inferno, EA's Visceral Studios will soon be raping history with a game based on London's notorious Jack the Ripper. At least, that's what the LA Times claims. According to the report, Visceral is developing the game while also working on Dante's Inferno and Dead Space 2.

Funnily enough, the LA Times report is months old, but nobody actually noticed it. What has been noticed, however, is a trademark filing for a game called, simply, The Ripper. Outside of that, all that's known is that it'll involve the 19th century serial killer.

I wonder if that's what Visceral will be doing now -- producing third-person action games on historical and literary events. I think a studio specializing in that kind of thing would be rather epic, although history buffs and book owls are sure to be offended.

It would depend on how well the games were made. Dante's Inferno looks okay but if they make a habit of just ripping other games and slapping literature on it that would get old.

I won't pass judgement yet though on this Ripper idea.

Always wanted to see a game based on this.

I think this has potential. Especially if you're playing as the man himself. If that's not the case then hopefully you'll play as a Sherlock Holmes type. I'm excited.

Sounds cool, if its true can't wait to see what they come up with, I just hope its got that old victorian london feel to the game. visceral games are turning into the videogame company of what wes craven has done for horror films.

@ PySk

Am I the only the one who thinks that idea might be brilliant?

NO wai! It would be awesome. I would play a game based on Metamorphosis. In a similar vein to Dante's Inferno I would expect it only to resemble the literary source vaguely. You would play Gregor Samsa a traveling salesman who turns into a human sized cockroach man that devours demons in order to keep his family safe.

Yeah ''murder literature'' because it's not like the game is meant to be an adaptation of the story into a new format, right?

Good idea, Visceral, but less of the raping history bit, Jim.

When creating anything, its possible to take influence from any other medium (yes, even book like Dante's Inferno), and I'm sure this term 'raping' wouldn't be used if Visceral were a small developer, so while I know you mean well, cut them some slack. The problem is that few devs actually look to the past for influence and do it well enough. Kudos to Visceral if they can pull this off too.

If you want to start on the raping other stuff bit, there would be no Star Wars, as many creative mediums do it, and we'd be here all day discussing it. Try using better terms like homage or influenced by, as some Dtoiders are young and impressionable.

I don't think it was Jim saying they were raping history and murdering books, more like those were his words but the paper's tone. I could be wrong but I took it as that being the LA Times position.

Don't I already get to kill prostitutes in GTA3? Why would I need another game about that?

If you look below that, Jim thinks a developer specializing in games based on historical events and literary works would be "epic" and I tend to agree. Any time I can play a game based on something I have previous knowledge of, especially if it's based on history and developed by Visceral, I'm all for it. Bring it on...

I don't think there's anyway you can turn Jack the Ripper into a shlockey 3rd person twitch action game. I think this idea has big potential, a sadistic horror adventure game, with the HD sheen of foggy London?

Sign me up, if true.

@Ninga

I wasn't disputing that at all, just really the use of the 'raping' term, as it does get overused and blown out of context.

EG: A better time to use 'raping' would be in the context to say the FF series, as there have been plenty of them, and its all Square Enix seem to push and promote (we all know SE have other IP that could be promoted more). In contrast to that, what EA are doing with Dante's Inferno has rarely been attemtped in games, if at all. Its all about the unjust/justified numbers, if you get me. Some might class EA 'raping' as their sports games, but I'd call time out on that, for the basic facts that sports are real world events, with rapidly everchanging variables of players, stats etc, and sport games must reflect that reality or be damned and not sell.

I know Dtoid is all about the games and fun comedy etc, but like I said, homage or influenced by would be better terms to use (each to their own I guess).

Had Jim used 'ripping', that would have been a better and more clever play on words (Jack the Ripper...get it). Yeah, you know what I mean anyway, just saying.

I love Visceral. If Dante's is a hit then surely so will The Ripper.

If Dead Space 2 is a console exclusive as is Dante's Inferno, Visceral might actually make me buy a 360/PS3 lol.

Will the Ripper himself wield a six foot butcher knife as he backflips through the streets of Victorian London?

If not, then I'm all for it!

Hmm... it's certainly a good choice for atmosphere... and Visceral defiantly know how to do atmosphere... if you're actually playing as Jack The Ripper though Fox are gonna lose their shit over this.

i had to double check my facts. i thought he raped victims and i was thinking that is a very fine line to tread on but i was wrong. he only mutilated them so in that case im all for a jack the ripper game. they will still have to be careful though. removal of prostitutes organs has ban written all over. certainly australia wont be getting the game and if there not careful other countries will ban it too. could be really good though if they execute it right.
