The Dante's Inferno that has been available on the PlayStation Network for the last few weeks is now up on Xbox Live today. The "Gates of Hell" demo starts you off at the very beginning of Dante's Inferno with Dante making his way straight down to Hell to get back the woman he loves.
The above video that Nick captured shows you what to expect from the entire demo. Of course, you can just go download it and find out for yourself what the game is like.
While Christians and Jews are off celebrating their respective Holidays this week, this demo is the perfect thing to keep Muslims busy since we have sh*t all else to do tomorrow. Oh wait. You're killing "Muslims" in the very beginning of the demo as you're taking part in the Crusades. Well ... f*ck.

And GoW ripped off more than a few action games itself, primarily Onimusha. The whole using souls to level up scheme was directly ripped from this game. The souls are even the same colors for crying out loud!
So, to all the doubters with their 'you can't use such a great work as Dante's Inferno, to defile as a game, sinner', a mighty middle finger to you all.
Next time, try keep an open mind.
I have a feeling Dante's Inferno might even top God of War, as it will be on both 360 and PS3. Larger audience, more cash for EA/Visceral's hard work.
I love big, dumb action games as much as anyone else; but somehow Dante's Inferno managed to break my stupid-o-meter. The fact that it tries to look smart just gives it another heaping helping of dumb.
Fun game, though... I think I'll enjoy it more on the 360 now that I can have some more appropriately silly music playing. "No Presents for Christmas" might be good to start with. >_>
@xenoslave42:
Yes, God of War "ripped off" some ideas from the Onimusha series. However, Dante's Inferno ripped off God of War damn near COMPLETELY. In GoW you have chests that givr you whatnot, in DI you get fountains. The battle system is pretty much exactly the same. Hell, even the control scheme (on the ps3 at least however it is a little different on the 360) is damn near exactly the same.
All in all, this game is GoW with the Dante's Inferno story attached.
@Cowboy TTop:
In regards to which will top which, think about it like this: On one hand you have a well renowned and critically acclaimed franchise that is exclusive to a certain system. On the other hand, you have a new IP (somewhat) that is multi-plat but is a blatant clone of the aforementioned critically acclaimed franchise.
I freely admit that DI is a carbon copy of GoW. I just like to point out that GoW wasn't so original itself. In fact, the only thing truly original about GoW was the brutality with which he dispatched his foes. Other than that GoW1 was a truly mediocre action game. GoW2 on the other hand ironed out the flaws of the first game and was actually fun to play, unlike it's predecessor that was riddled with crappy platforming towards the end. Rotating blade walls anyone? :p
@xenoslave42:
I know that GoW isn't completely original, but my point was that DI is an EXACT copy. Lack of originality isn't a bad thing if you execute it very well (ala Uncharted 2) but when you "copy and paste", that's where I have the problem. On your thing about GoW 1 though, I wholeheartedly agree that after playing 2, 1 seems so dull in comparison.
Yeah, it's a total GoW ripoff, but I just don't care. I like dumb action games and this looks like it'll be fun. I'll buy it to tide me over until GoW III.
Weird how the demo isn't on the dashboard anywhere as is the case whenever there's any new marketplace content so I had to check Game Marketplace > All Games > "Browse" > "D" > Dante's Inferno, in case anyone was wondering. Downloading it now.
From all the hate I would be inclined to believe that this game had actually copied and pasted your sons and daughters only to devour them whole in front of your eyes.
@dogestyl You keep on saying it's a total 100% ripoff but you don't give and examples of what they ripped off, all you said were the controls so what's that, 5% of DI is ripped off?
Everyone knows, plenty of good action games came long before the GoW series. To only look at GoW is Dog being selectively myopic, to back up his lame argument. On top of all that, many have ragged on Dante's Inferno, for corrupting the original book, yet blatantly wear blinkers for the GoW series, which totally corrupts long established ancient greek mythology.
WTF? That's right, there's no one by the name of Kratos in those myths, and all the stuff he does in the games breaks those myths asunder. However, despite this, the GoW series is still a fun game. Dante's Inferno, no matter how fantastic and ridiculous fun it is from the book, will fit in nicely. I'm glad to say, I thoroughly enjyed the demo on 360, as I knew I would.
Lastly, choose your words carefully. If these games were a rip off, Sony and EA would be in a court battle. 'Influenced by GoW and countless other action games' is how you should put it, and that's not at all a bad thing.
I'm a huge God of War fan. Probably some of my favorite games in the genre ever. And as (likely) the only person here who has played Dante's Inferno from start to finish, I see the comparisons. But to condemned the game for being a "blatant rip off" is unfair, because there's a lot the game does that goes above and beyond the "God of War" formula. Enough that it should stand on its own.
Unfortunately, I have to be vague, but if you paid attention to the demo, you'd catch a few hints of what I'm talking about (particularly in the combat and how the player has control over how skills open up, etc.).
Sounds like a lot of people had made up their minds before playing the game; I find it hard to believe that anyone can play the demo and say "it sucks" or to a lesser extent "isn't good." Particularly if you do enjoy games in the vein of God of War.
Agree 100%. It always blows my mind when fans of a series cry foul of another game if it copies their beloved series. If it's so much like the game you love, why not play it and enjoy it too? Anyways, I'll be picking this up as well as GoW3 and heartily enjoying both.
The thing about GOW, though, is that as many liberties it takes with the familiar myths, you could argue that it's still well within the spirit of those mythological epics. Heroes, Gods, monsters... it's more Harryhausen than Homer, sure; but it's all there. :)
But yeah, no one's enjoyment of either game should really be hinging on their 'literary authenticity'. I'm just hoping no one looks at Dante's Inferno and sees it as the brain dead 'gamer' take on classic literature. It's hilariously stupid and fun; but honestly... it's also a bit embarrassing.
meh. Topless ghosts and self-mutilation; sounds like the wet dream of a 13 year old Marilyn Manson fan. If they wanted to add tits to a famous piece of literature I don't know why they didn't just make "Paradise Lost: The Game" or "Lady Chatterly's Lover".
Hey, if we're looking for analogies, this is obviously the Saints Row of action games. I think the opening especially and the attack animations themselves are unsettlingly close to another game. Light, light, heavy attack and I'll be damned if Dante doesn't slam his scythe on the ground for a big concussive payoff.
Ya'll remember Rygar on PS2? the story of a greco-roman warrior battling mythological beasts with a bladed shield on the end of a chain?He talked to Athena, collected 4 types of elemental magic, had a combo system, came out in 2002. ehhh nevermind.
Not having actually played any GoW, but always feeling attracted to the storyline and the hype around the series, I was looking forward to the third installment. But if DI's a "blatant ripoff", I'm not sure I'm that excited about it anymore.
(From what I got in the demo) DI is just a series of small and restrictive areas where you have to kill everyone by button mashing (in a specified sequence for more powerful combos... such skill...), followed by a story-developing cut-scene (which unnecessarily contain boobs to irk the ESRB, but I'm not complaining), followed by a big and angry boss fight, ad nauseam.
I fail to see the long-term fun in this. Sure, the graphics are nice, and the story might be interesting ("might", meaning it wasn't in the demo, although the Reaper fight was mildly amusing), but the gaming experience is severely lacking for me personally.
And sure, you manage to squeeze a smooth 60 FPS when the gameplay is so linear and you never get to see more than 20 on-screen characters at once, constrained in a very small space. I also hate the rhythm mini-game you have to perform every time to bring a boss down (does GoW also have this?). This is the least fun gameplay mechanic, which, for some reason, seems popular among game developers nowadays.

I fear sales of it will suffer, because the first quarters game releases are going to be tight.
zomg CTZ moar anti-MS BIAS! :P
I've never read the book(I know, uncouth!) But I'm curious enough about the game, thanks for the heads up!

God of War lite, pretty much it.

WE FUCKING GET IT. SHUT THE HELL UP. When Dante comes out don't play it, and keep your screaming trap shut
That is all^^

I found the demo to be completely uninspiring.
Not having actually played any GoW, but always feeling attracted to the storyline and the hype around the series, I was looking forward to the third installment. But if DI's a "blatant ripoff", I'm not sure I'm that excited about it anymore.

So yea, won't be buying it, for sure.
