Dan

Man, it has been a whirlwind of a last few months for Ziff Davis/1UP/EGM. After filing for bankruptcy just a month ago, it now looks like 1UP and Electronic Gaming Monthly staple Dan “Shoe” Hsu is leaving ... for good.

According to Vice President Simon Cox’s blog on 1UP, Shoe will be leaving Ziff Davis on April 25 for “change in his life.”

This news comes as a shock since Shoe just announced in the last issue of EGM that he was promoted within the company (with James Mielke taking over his position as Editor-in-Chief).

On a personal note: I never had the pleasure of meeting Dan, but I have been a fan of his since I was a teenager. I equated him with Electronic Gaming Monthly and it is very sad to see him go. I’m sure I am speaking for all of us here at Destructoid when I wish him the best. Good luck, Shoe. You will be missed.

That's...wow. Like Gameboi, I didn't see that one coming. Dan kept that magazine honest. There's no doubt Mielke will do the same, but wow.

I can't wait for the "print media is dead, harharharhahar" comments. Before that happens, go fuck yourselves.

Man, I LOVED EGM back in the day. When I was in like, middle-school I'd be so psyched to get the super-fat 200 page magazine and look at it for days. I still have the first one I ever bought somewhere...

So long, Sushi-X

Tomorrow, we'll find out that Shoe is a new Associate Editor at Destructoid, and all will be well in the world.

I am a fan of Shoe, but I can't say that I've read EGM in a long time, especially not since finding this place. What does "a change in his life" mean? He's going to work somewhere else, or he's going to do something entirely different?

I'm stunned. I haven't subbed to EGM in years but I still picked up the occasional issue and it was predominantly for Shoe and Mark Macdonald.

Tiny font that requires copy/pasting into notepad in order for it to be legible is something that is worse than useless and is something that I was hoping to never see on Destructoid. Thanks for destroying my dream.

Man, that's a shame. I hope he goes onto do bigger things. I guess you can't work as a videogame journalist your whole life. It must be an obvious concern on those 'old timers'* in the industry. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up as a community manager for some game company :P

*i am not saying he is old, just that he's been doing this for a long time.

Shoe's leaving? well that's bad. I seriously loved reading the comics added in EGM. Let Alone Shoe was just a great guy. Seriously I don't look at EGM as much mainly cause they don't offer as much junk in it as they did say...7 years or so ago, but Shoe's one of the reasons I didn't mind taking a looker whenever I was in a book store or something. (that and i'm just so accustomed to EGM, it's pretty much the only game mag i'll look at.)

Where will Sushi X go now?
Dyson's Avatar
Dyson at 04/11/2008 16:11
Meh. Not to spam on the guy, but it'll be nice to finally read an EGM without the "HOW HONEST ARE WE? WE'RE SO FUCKING GODDAMN HONEST! SO. FUCKING. HONEST." bullshit he wrote for every single EIC piece since they asked Peter Moore a tough question -- 2 years ago.
Kyousuke Nanbu's Avatar

When I started reading EGM, it was a different editor, Hsu came back and the magazine turned into total crap, the re-design they gave it made it HORRIBLE, tiny reviews no longer than many of the comments here, they just looked big due the tiny font and wide spacing, they also removed the little color things that organized the previews and just threw them all together.

So all in all, don't really care, I might actually read the magazine now with him gone.

He fuckin' better be able to.
Novakaine's Avatar
Novakaine at 04/11/2008 17:12
Not to rag on the guy because I did enjoy him sometimes on their podcasts, but Hsu was a major opponent of their leaving the 10-point scale (which I've said before is a flawed, pitiful, superlative scale), got rather fanboyish when it came to his favorite games (specifically Splinter Cell and Halo), and is an achievement whore (and I don't think I'm bearing a news-flash when I say achievement whores are the epitome of lame in video games).

Still, as an avid reader of 1up.com it sort of saddens me to see ZD seemingly go through such a hard time. First the filed bankruptcy, then the discontinuation of GFW Magazine, and now Hsu leaving... oh well, as long as I have my Retronauts and 97.5: The Brodeo I'm okay.

That's too bad. Been a fan of his since I was in grade school. I remember him leaving EGM. I remember him on CNN. Hell, even when I didn't subscribe to EGM from about 2001 to last year I still liked hearing news about him or from him on 1up. Just a guy you could trust on video games. Simple as that.
