Daily Mail jumps on Modern Warfare 2 'outrage' photo

How pathetically predictable. The first of the big mainstream "news" outlets has finally taken the bait, with British tabloid (read: glorified toilet paper) The Daily Mail claiming that Modern Warfare 2 has sparked "outrage" with its controversial scene in which players experience the unwholesome side of a terrorist attack. Of course, when The Fail says "Outrage," it actually means, "We asked one person with a known history of hating videogames and that's enough for us to run a story."

The Fail has teamed up with Keith Vaz, the ignorant, corrupt and agenda-driven British politician who has tried to make a career of vilifying videogames with lies and half-truths for the past several years. Vaz claims to be "absolutely shocked by the level of violence in this game" and says he will decry Modern Warfare 2 to the British Parliament on Monday.

It's stunning just how predictable the self-styled "news" media can be over this stuff, jumping on the latest videogame "outrage" like wolves on a wounded deer. Of course, Vaz is an ineffectual liar who will be unable to stop the behemoth that is Modern Warfare 2, but it's still disgusting how such ignorant court jesters can actually find a platform upon which to rant and moan.

Vaz should stick to what he does best -- abusing his position as an MP to try and get his friends out of legal trouble and spending taxpayers' money on furnishing his house with velvet pillows.

Black pudding.

As for the scene itself, until we play it, it's only as controversial as we make it out to be.

It's amazing how predictable the news media can be after the predictable predicted outrage from the videogame news media.

But let's disregard that and rage about the news media.

RAGE!

What about depictions of terrorist attacks in films? I know the whole "games are more visceral" argument will probably come up again, but I'm sure there are depictions of terrorism in other mediums that are similarly "unwholesome." It's that age-old fear of new mediums remanifesting itself, and a veiled attempt to erode at the freedoms of art as a form of social commentary on Vaz's part.

Hell hath no fury like the British right-wing press.

This is so fucking pathetic. People like him are the reason of the games still being a medium, that can't be even compared to movies or music.
Why do i still have to hide the fact that i enjoy playing video games, so i won't be considered as a childish person, that can't even wipe his ass correctly.
IT'S BECAUSE OF HIM
RAGE

It's stuff like this that makes me angry.
Why on earth would be waste time sorting out the economy or immigration when we can witter and moan about video games?

You don't see people complaining so much about the film industry when controversial films such as Natural Born Killers, that contain a lot more graphic scenes that COD MW2 could ever dream up, are available on any HMV shelf.

Silly British government. There's a reason why it's an 18 rated game.
We have a ratings system for a reason, so why get all uppity about it?

I still think people should be able to buy what they want. Liberalism ftw!

Ban this sick filth.

Although, fun to note; there's more picture than text in the Daily Hate's article. Seems that despite the headline's sensationalism, they couldn't actually find that much wrong to actually say about the game, or anyone other than Keith Vaz to get nasty quotes from.

Why give them the free press for such crap kneejerk journalism?

Its an adult game for adult gamers, in a country where the public owning guns is banned, anyway. Sure, I kind of have no problem with them being affended. For the games industry to mature, feathers will have to be ruffled, simple as.

One of the many reasons why I hate Britain these days. The other three thousand being chavs.

They need to actually play the game before they say things like this, and even then it's just pointless mud-slinging. Just because everyone with a brain has gone to the internet for news, doesn't mean you can just make shit up.

It's funny to think that articles like these will actually hurt the game. As biased and one-sided as it is, bad publicity is actually good publicity. More people talking about the game, whether it be in good or bad terms, helps to sell more copies of the game. When I first heard that MW2 will have a level thatlet you team up with terrorists I was even more eager to play the game. So ironically all the Daily Mail and Keith Vaz are doing is advertising the game.

Later than expected.

This will only generate more hype around the game... do they really think they can deter youngsters/gamers by saying 'level of violence in this game'.

Yes a few mums and dads may twig to NOT letting their children have the game (which is a GOOD thing) but it will only make more people buy it!

@taumpytears "Man, I am really getting tired of the reactionary gaming press. It would be amazing to see a site like Destructoid examine both sides of the issue in an article like this."

Agreed. This is the industry and society in general: it is perfectly fine to say an opinion, throw in a link, and exhibit anger, but when it comes to actually backing up the things you say in detail and taking in the other side as possibly having some points to make, that is not being objective. This isn't just blogs, but how people respond to things in everyday life. When was the last time you were able to talk to the people in this gaming community without being heckled or told that a viewpoint is correct in a single sentence? But, when it comes to publishing stories, maybe some more journalistic integrity is needed. It isn't easy to write objectively, but when you don't write and act objectively, it garners disrespect. Look at what this game is doing to the companies making it, the people reacting to it, and those reporting on it. The issue is not really the game it all, it is that we lack the ability to consider that there isn't necessarily a correct right vs wrong way of looking at things. You, me, anyone can justify their thoughts as much or as little as they want, but when you aren't willing to even think from another person's perspective, than how well do you know people at all?

... sorry, I'm ranty today.

I know little of British politics (or U.S. politics for that matter) so how bad is this Keith Vaz guy? We talking your average dickhead politician running around moaning about video games or that Jack Thompson style "WE NEED TO BAN ALL THE VIDEO GAMES" running around in courts trying to do impossible things wasting everyone's time and money.

...Or worse?

If you cover a touchy subject, then you have to accept the backlash that comes with it. I don't see the problem.

ManHunt 2 was dis-tasteful in every extreme, and a crap game to boot. I think it was fairly flogged as violence for the sake of violence.

If Infinity Ward are going to include a scene as a terrorist in an airport, the they have to take the flak with that. If they didn't want the backlash, don't include the scene in the game. Simple as that.

Usually I'd be laughing at the Daily Mail here, but they do have an argument. The MW2 scene is a watershed in terms of what's acceptable in games, and it is quite different from out and out violence or gunplay. I certainly disagree with their argument, but they actually have a defensible point this time round.

Wait, are we going to ignore that some of this outrage was started by Destructoid? There was one of the first articles written hear to decry how the scene which the writer did not play had affected him ... pretty much the same thing Destructoid is now accusing Vaz of doing? There was no bait, as the outrage displayed here was not some measure to draw out the news media, but a story meant to capitalize on the drama as well. The video game media is the one to blame this time if any such bannings or further drama appear over this game, they started the hoopla, and would be the reason people like Vaz even heard of it to make an issue of it.

Just to make something clear, Destructoid did not plan a 2 part pro and con article segment on the issue, one writer wrote a con, agreeing with the drama children over something he never played, much like Vaz, and later another writer decided to write a counter piece. It was never mentioned or expected to be treated as a two part. Maybe if we weren't so dramatic, maybe Vaz would have never heard of the issue in the first place.
