Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Japan’s Daigo “The Beast” Umehara took first place in the Street Fighter IV tournament at EVO 09 this past weekend. Daigo defeated the top-ranked US player, Justin Wong, once again. These two always have some pretty epic battles and we should be seeing video of their fight along with other fights appearing on the EVO Web site pretty soon.

Big congrats to Daigo for another amazing win at Evo! Did anyone happen to catch the live stream of their fight? How was it?

My own favorite match (as a Cammy player) was Sanford busting out his incredible Cammy to wipe the floor with Dan from Japan. Unbelievable.

And Team Wildcard! Oh god Sakura.

No surprise here. Go Daigo!

Was Iyo apart of this tourney? His Dhalsim at the Gamestop Tournament was unreal, I loved it.

Also, I still love the SF3 matches no matter what.

Yeah, the final matches weren't nearly as good as the first day's matches I thought.

Justin Wong also acted like a dick, getting up after every match like he was everything. Daigo just played it cool, even after winning.

Total professional.

"Justin Wong also acted like a dick, getting up after every match like he was everything."

That's what I HATE about Justin. Probably the only one doing that in the whole tourney too. I'd like to think of it as a silent battle between warriors, like Daigo is all the time.

Well, the more he does it, the more he gets his ass handed by Daigo.

Sabre is freakin amazing, makes me proud that sakura is my favorite character!!

That cammy that took out Dan from japan was crazy.
I wonder how Diago would fair against it?

Was this an amusingly ironic match-up of their mains or was it an intentional cliche American character vs. cliche Japan character match-up for the finals based on the players country of origin.

Comparing the both of them physically, I am now slightly more embarrassed to say i'm american.

Seriously. One appears to be in perfect shape, and good hygiene. The other, is an abomination. America... fuck yeah. *sigh*

Daigo had it all over him, even though he lost a couple of rounds he just looked in control and totally dominated with his Ryu. Funny to see other people people saying Sakura is their favourite, she's mine too and i'm mighty sick of playing so many Ryu/Ken/Sagat's online.

Watching EVO on the live stream was amazing, and everything I want to see in watching a gaming event. I would have loved to be there :D

Also, I thought Sanford's Cammy was surreal....I was rooting for him to beat justin in order to face daigo, but they said he was planning on using Seth. I'm not sure how that would have fared, but who knows!

nice I wanted to see the Sanford cammy matches as people have been saying his shit was awesome.

the Daigo/Wong match was good. I think Daigo dragged it out on purpose but that's me. Wasn't so much of a fan of Wong getting up after a few matches as if he won the damn series. sit your ass down and win. It's cool to be hyped but don't need to trudge off on a victory rant.

@ everyone

Here's a better quality of the full grand finals between Justin and Daigo.

set 1 part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XtJhpgp6R0
set 1 part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQpTDiDjibo
set 2 part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dgr24wo6Cs0
set 2 part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOfG4cIWsC4

@ vApathyv

Here's Sanford's Cammy vs. Dan from Japan's Ryu:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5yJ3x26sng

IMO she's still definitely low tier. Dan had never fought a Cammy before and Sanford happens to have ungodly reaction times; without those two advantages, winning with Cammy becomes much more difficult. I say Daigo would've smashed his Cammy if Sanford had made it to the finals and used her.

@ adwhammy

I don't know about 'dominated,' Justin took him to the final game of the final set (after winning the first set). If you're speaking generally and not about the grand finals in particular, then yeah Daigo was pretty dominant. But the grand finals were close as hell.

TBH, Not that surprised.

Daigo is a monster but I just think his Ryu spams the hadouken a little too much...and Justin is such a douche. I don't care, his last name is another word for a penis... so... hah.

And the Sanford match, was amazing, but I did think the JP player was at a disadvantage, because JP players rely on arcade characters... and Cammy is not an arcade character.

He did kind of get the tactics after a while but his inexperience against a Cammy player, made the lost a little inevitable.

Wow...that really was an awesome Cammy match. I could never hope to be on that level. And while I'm sure Cammy's still low tier, it won't stop me from using her all the time, and it's really great to see there is a guy out there repping Cammy at EVO.

Also, douche or otherwise, that 12-hit Balrog combo from Justin deserved to be bragged about, IMO.

If you can show your skills against the best in the world, why not get paid? Obviously the devs created the game to cater to the competition hungry. Since you and I can't pull half the shit these guys can and since people wanna see the skill, pay them for a COMPETITION.

Man, fuck the people who hated Justin's crowd pleasing antics. He was putting on a show for the crowd and they reciprocated. Nothing wrong with that at all. Sorry you guys hate hype considering it's a huge part of the fighting game scene.

With regards to Justin hamming it up - It's important to take a few things into account.

One is that Justin is from New York. That's totally an expected thing for guys from New York. As long as you don't show disrespect to your opponent by slapping off a handshake, getting in their face, or something, playing to the crowd is all right. Getting them pumped up is cool.

Two, Justin and Daigo have a long thing going. Ever since Evo 2004. They're considered the best from their country and have a rivalry. They both have mad respect for each other and a little hollering isn't gonna change that.

Three, Justin is usually considered the bad guy in fights. Unless he's going against a Japanese guy he's the overwhelming favorite. When the crowd got behind him he was pumped.

Finally, Justin really had some clutch play by going with someone he doesn't normally play. Balrog would probably be his third character. However, Justin prides himself on being able to play anybody when the need arises. His main two picks weren't working so he pulled out Balrog and battled back from elimination it was amazing. Everyone was pumped.

Re: Justin being a fat slob - He's actually way more trim than he was when he showed up to the gaming scene. Also keep in mind he played a ton of matches. He made the grand finals in three major tournaments. He wasn't the only one looking pretty bad by the end of it.

This is the first EVO Championship Daigo has won since 2003.

Kyosuke - that seems... like a silly mindset? They're essentially gambling on who will win since it costs money to enter the tournament. Similar to a golf or poker tournament.

@Jack of Arcades, Das Inchworm:

THANK YOU.

I was starting to get a little annoyed at all the "showboating" comments people are making. He got all the way to the finals and was playing to a highly energetic crowd (And crowds love getting any sort of recognition. See... Well, anything sports.) It's his right to have a little fun with it too.

Char -

Wong may or may not be a douchebag (I can't say for sure) but there was something about the way things went down that was electric. The fact that almost everyone in the crowd got behind him says something, because it was a mostly west coast crowd and not a lot of people like him.
