D3 announces rumor that 'classic' Matt Hazard game is coming to XBLA, PSN photo

D3Publisher is really hamming up the whole Matt Hazard thing. In just a few weeks, the publisher will ship Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game follows the exploits of a fictional "legendary" videogame character, its tongue firmly planted in its cheek as it pokes fun at staples of the games industry.

This publisher has now announced that a "classic" Matt Hazard title is rumored to be coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network later this summer. Yeah, seriously -- the publisher sent us a press release saying "Hey, did you hear these rumors?" Crazy bastards. They also passed along some artwork which makes the game look like a ridiculous Contra clone, with Hazard fighting weird yeti creatures, ninjas, and a robotic dinosaur.

Of course, all of this sounds completely f**king bonkers, and that's the point. It also sounds totally awesome, am I right? Want to know more? Check out our early preview of Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard

I think that if they were to release these fictitious retro games free of charge, it would be great publicity for their game. I would download it, as I'm slightly interested in the game. A freebie like this might push me from interested to committed to purchase.

I think of this game as the video-gaming equivalent of Jumper:

Looks promising, but then turns out to be total shit. Maybe I'll be wrong, but then again that's just my opinion.

Ooh! This sounds like an awesome idea! I hope it will be as cheesy as it looks!

This brings back a lot of memories. I had some great times playing the original Matt Hazard on my Super Pretendo in that alternate universe I used to live in.

I'll admit, it took me a while to realize just how strange that headline was. Announces rumor? Wait, what?

WAtched the videos from the link, and i have to say i'm intrigued. I love spoofing, tongue-in-cheek of that sort. I just hope they can put some extra polish on that.

Time to dig up my old Matt Hazard player's guide. I never could beat Drill Penguin.

Between Retro Game Challenge and Matt Hazard, these are two games that show the industry at a point of cherishing its past and taking the piss out of itself.

I think D3 are really doing well after Dark Sector, as a developer to watch. I love the Matt Hazard trailers.

The ironic thing is that Matt Hazard is doing, is what Duke Nukem should have been doing to make a come back.

A new game on Live, yeah I'll check it out.

I love the concept behind all of this, but it seems like the execution is gonna come up short, but what a great idea!

I want this game to be good, but the movies shown just don't make it stand out all that much as a shooter. Gimmicky, but standard fare otherwise.

You know D3 doesn't make any games, right? The full name of the company is in fact, D3 Publisher.

The developer of Matt Hazard is Vicious Cycle, responsible for... Dead Head Fred and a bunch of crappy licensed games.

Still interested to see how this turns out. Have my fingerless gloves from PAX still ;P.

I'm really hoping this game is at least enjoyable on a cult classic level, because the concept sounds really original. I want it to be good, and it would be great if this game idea was also good.
