Curable diseases are for wimps: new Eternal Sonata images photo

Namco Bandai has released some new screenshots of Eternal Sonata, their forthcoming Xbox 360 RPG.

Known as Trusty Bell in Japan (where it will be released this June), the game is being developed by tri-Crescendo, the same team that brought you the GameCube Baten Kaitos titles. What's interesting about the game (besides the fact that it looks ridiculously cool), is that it features a musical based battle system. What the hell does that mean? You've got me, but I like music and I like battles, so we're all set.

Oh yeah, did I mention that the game's story features pianist/composer Frédéric Chopin as the main character? Chopin, who died at the age of 39, suffered from the pulmonary tuberculosis, a fatal disease that infects the lungs. Eternal Sonata takes place in a magical land in which those who have incurable diseases also have magical powers.

Uh, yeah. You guys can run with that one.

I haven't been able to sit down to a JRPG in years. They take a solid investment of time to appreciate and I've become far too busy in my "old" age. That said, this is one game I think I will definitely pick up. It has a cool visual style to it and I'm strangely enamored with the idea of playing a game featuring Chopin.

Oh, on a side note, I hope that wasn't a typo and that Namco Bandai has officially become Namco Bando... it's just so much more god damned satisfying to say.

Unless I hear something about the battle system being different from and other turn-based RPG then color me unimpressed. The girl's quote about friends is making me think the story is overly melodramatic, Japanese like to cry so they like tear inducing stories, and all the hype seems to be about the graphics only. I want to know if Gohneria will give me fire breath or not damnit, need to know more about the game.

That sounds like it could be pretty interesting. I'll have to keep me eyes on this game and see what they mean.

The graphics look really good. But I'm not a graphics whore, so I'll need more info

If "musical based battle system" means a typical turn based system with the word "music" instead of "magic", then I'm not too impressed.

But the graphics are good enough for me to give it at least a rental. Plus, I want to see how badly they fuck up Chopin's posthumous image.

From the shots you just showed, it looks like Chopin is the "main character", inasmuch as all this is going down in Chopin's coma-ed up brain.

And also from the shots, it looks like the "music based" thing is going to be primarily a visual style. I could be (read: hope I am) wrong, but I'm not seeing anything more right now.

Addendum: I am in fact looking forward to this game, because I adore the Baten Kaitos series. But I am a little leery about Tri-Crescendo making a non-card-based rpg.

And I suppose having crabs gives you the ability to talk to underwater sea creatures?

Ah well, the game does look interesting at least. Lots of creativity(and probably some psychotropic drugs) must have gone into its design.

Gotta love the violin sword in any case.

But I must know....are there Guitar Battle Axes?

The last JRPG I played was Tales of Symphonia on the Gamecube. That game was so long, I just lost interest half-way through.

Tales of Symphonia was awesome, super long yes.

It's nice to see some screen shots with English subtitles, thats the first time i have seen that.

It also deals with light and shadow, if you are standing in the light your attack power is different from when you stand in the shadow on the field.

Plus they have hinted that you have something to do with how the music progesses, but little is known to that effect

oh man, I sold baten kaitos after playing it for five minutes. probably the worst game I have ever played. and the ONLY reason I say that is for the voice acting. I couldn't even mute it, because I still knew it was there. I hope this game is better

It takes place in his dream where his illness is actually a great power. Not a bad concept at all it's pretty fresh.
