My only experience with the Culdcept games comes from a demo of Culdcept Saga I played on Xbox Live. Since it's a card based strategy game and I have all the luck of Calamity James from the Beano, I found myself trounced fairly swiftly. I then decided never to play it again.
While I don't like relying on pure game-generated luck for all my success, some people love it and there are a fair few Culdcept fans on Destructoid. I think it takes someone particularly nerdy, even among gamers, to combine card games, board games and Japanse RPGs into one big ball of social shame, but that's obviously just me.
Now the geekery can go portable, as Culdcept DS is on the way. Check out the above, incredibly Japanse trailer. Deku deku :3

Wow. Saying that Culdcept is all about luck is the biggest slap in the face to its players. If it were flipping a coin, that's luck. The sheer number of factors you take into account in playing Culdcept makes it an extremely complex probability game. Not luck, but "meta-luck" if you will. And those who play the game will agree that they prefer a hard fought, 125 turn victory. There is nothing like a well executed comeback or defeating an unexpected strategy.
I love laughing in the face of people who say the computer cheats. I wipe the floor with the computer.
That Xbox Live demo was so awful, it almost turned me off buying a game I was convinced I would get. Then I swallowed hard, bought it anyway, and the game is precisely as good as I thought-- not as shitty as the demo made it seem.
Seriously, this one needs a rental, not a demo, to "get."
I was going to post here about how Culdcept isn't about luck a at all and blah blah, but then I thought about where you're coming from.
Culdcept Saga for the 360 has a BRUTAL learning curve for beginners and unless you know exactly what you're doing right from the start (from playing previous versions), you WILL get trounced repeatedly at the start.
I think there needs to be a really good tutorial in the DS version. Especially since the DS has a very wide user-base and in order for this game to succeed, it will have to appeal to more than just the crazy-ass-collectable-sadomasochistic crowd.
Since I AM part of that crowd, and I DON'T have a 360 of my own, this game can't come out soon enough.
Culdcept does have one of the steepest learning curves I've seen in a game, but it was easily one of the most rewarding games to learn how to play properly.
A thick manual and constant badgering from an NPC won't suffice to teach the masses, and really, this game is obviously not for everyone.
It's a thinking (wo)man's game, and not many people enjoy thinking these days, it seems.
You know, I actually didn't like the demo. Mainly because I didn't know what the hell was going ON. I bought the game because a) I buy a lot of games, or did at that time, b)it was only $40 and got good reviews and c)I just knew that it was my kind of thing, if I gave it a chance. I was actually happy to see the thick manual; I love games with lots of depth. Plus, at least I knew I could finally understand what the heck was going on.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Dale North and I were literally discussing the idea of this game on DS last week. YES!
That's the thing. You don't get all your success from the roll of the dice. Most of it comes from your strategy and building a good deck.

NERD RAGE
AND NOW IT'S PORTABLE!!! HURRAH!

like dex said, sometimes it can get crazy long... but being able to close the lid (or if possible save a game mid-way through) would be clutch.
also, online wifi would be hot too... but i suppose we can just play on live for that matter.
