Crytek to develop Homefront sequel photo

Crysis developer Crytek has inked a deal with THQ to develop the next Homefront game, significantly raising the chances of the sequel actually being good.

"Homefront's unique setting and storyline captivated gamers the world over," said THQ's Danny Bilson, expertly neglecting to mention the gameplay. "With Crytek's industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we're supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand."

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli believes that his studio can turn Homefront into a "truly blockbuster game."

Although THQ's press release did not state so, it's said that Crytek UK will be handling the title.

Homefront had masses of potential, but spent most of its campaign fellating one of the NPCs -- an NPC who was completely unlikable due to his snotty attitude and perpetually straining voice actor. I hope the next game builds its experience around the player, rather than a bunch of nobodies who insist on opening every single door for you.

Here's hoping!

Hey! The online in HomeFront was decent. You know, after they fixed it.

Probably not arguing too well in its favour here, but HomeFront wasn't the AIDS-bestowing game everyone makes it out to be.

Though yeah - that Connor, eh?

...why?

"Homefront's unique setting and storyline captivated gamers the world over"

Nope. It had the potential to, but it really didn't.

"With Crytek's industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre..."

No high-tech monkey suits in Homefront, last time I checked. So shiny graphics and subpar gunplay? Mmmkay.

This is not very exciting.

first they pressured Kaos to release the game prematurely,
game sold great(over 2mln copies for new IP that didn't even have huge budget to back it up is amazing),
then they closed down Kaos for supposedly disappointing sales of the game,
and now they're making the sequel?
ok, this is a giant dick move from THQ.

Wasn't Homefront returned quite a bit too?

Homefront's single player was either a brilliant satire or a clumsy inept take on "modern warfare" games. I would like to think the former, with scenes such as "Press X to Hide in Mass Grave" and sniping from a suburban treehouse. I thought it was actually pretty good at depicting what Americans turned guerrilla soldiers would be like, though that kind of sacrificed the "cool, likeable hero" thing for it.

The multiplayer has a lot of good ideas, which MW3 seems to be stealing (which I am actually fine with), so it'll be interesting to see if anyone will give the sequel a shot. The sequel will at least LOOK far better than the original, anyway.

It's a shame knowing Crytek UK (formerly Free Radical) will be making this game and that it won't be one iota like TimeSplitters but more like bland Crysis.

Once again I ask: why didn't Croteam purchase FRD instead of Crytek?

This is GREAT news to me. I was highly anticipating Homefront for a long time before its release only to be severely disappointed by the actual finished product. The overly-short campaign and shoddy gameplay that couldn't be made up for by the multiplayer IMO. So to hear that a tried and tested AAA developer like Crytek is taking the reigns to this IP is thrilling to me. The story and universe is what captivated me into buying the game in the first place, but the actual implementation of that was poor. Crytek's gameplay has always been of high quality and well polished while their story department is usually left quite lacking. I think with this new partnership we will get the best of both worlds. A well-written story and high quality gameplay.

The only thing I liked about homefront was the online portion. Them saying that the story captivated me in any way almost seems like an insult considering how badly implemented it was.

Homefront was good before I played it. But all its ideas were executed badly, And any of the things that could have made it less of a standard shooter were ignored.

I hope Crytek do it right, Less of a sequel, More of a remake, New story, New characters, New mechanics.

FUCK THE HATERS.

Homefront was the closest thing to BF2 on consoles, because the pedigree was there. Kaos Studios comes from a long line of all-things-Battlefield. They made the Desert Combat mod that "inspired" BF2(read: was stolen by DICE when they hired Trauma Studios, their old name) and then they worked ON BF2 and then they made Frontlines: Fuel of War, the only Battlefield experience on consoles prior to Homefront.

Fuck the idiots who knew nothing about that and focused on the singleplayer when the pedigree of the developer was their EXCELLENCE in multiplayer. It's like the newbs who play fighting games for story. Pfft.

Hell, Homefront was more like Battlefield than Battlefield(Shit Company series with the shit Rush mode that's now being carried over to BF3) was. Crysis2 sucked. Homefront 2 will suck because Crytek sucks. Yes, I'm still going to buy it because I loved the first.

Yes I mad.
Yes I want a TRUE* BF2 sequel.
Yes I want a Homefront sequel.
Yes I want a Time Splitters 4 sequel.
YES I FUCKING MAD.

*no shit 'rush' mode that was invented for casuals. CONQUEST MODE OR NOTHING, FFS.

If they get rid of matchmaking and go to server browsers for the online play... with a party system for the PS3 that actually WORKS (ie: all members of your party actually get put into the same game) then the basis of the online game was fantastic... it was the structure around getting into a game that was incredibly broken.

I agree THQ pulled a messed up move here. Rather than working with Kaos at improving for the sequel, they close shop and hire on a big time game developer. I do not fault Crytek on this one. However, to THQ, you have shamed.

The thing that attracted me to Homefront was the possibility for a wicked good campaign. Luckily i dodged a bullet when someone else got it before me and i got a look and saw that it wasn't what i hoped it to be.

No idea what the online was like. heard it was mega broken on release so oh wells.

@sofik88.

THQ have been masters of the douche moves lately i want my damned 4 player co op avengers game damnit.

i still think that they got iron man right in it. To me Iron Man should always be first person. You want to play as Iron Man not control him.

Batman works as a 3rd person because of the type of combat and the like. Iron man doesn't really fight the same way and as a result TPS just looks uninspired

I really, really hope Battlefield 3's campaign doesn't fall into the same rut as Homefront did, with "follow soldier X" being the main objective in most every mission.

OT: This is good news as far as I'm concerned. Crytek knows how to build and pace a good campaign, incorporating stealth and planning into the firefights. Just so long as they polish up that AI...

Compared to Crysis ...Crysis 2 does suck. Never played Homefront so I can't comment, but Crytek is a very good FPS developer. Its amazing how so much people (most of whom couldn't program an alarm clock without instructions) can hate on such a talent developer. Like someone said and I agree, Crytek should take over alot of unsuccessful FPS...HAZE, Turok, BLACK. Heck, I've never played Homefront, but now that Crytek is developing the sequel I am interested in the series. (Can't appreciate the sequel if I haven't experienced the first I would imagine)

In my opinion, all Crytek has going for them is glorious graphics and the superb gameplay that comes with the nanosuit (the first one mostly). When you take that out, all you have left is terrible AI, gunplay that is nothing out of the ordinary, and stories that go from okay to complete rubbish. The only thing I see them bringing to the table without nanosuits is pretty graphics. And I'm sure we all know that a pile of shit painted to look like gold is still just a pile of shit. I'm not saying Crytek won't be able to rock a Homefront sequel and turn it into a game worth playing, but they aren't the king ding-a-lings of FPS craft. Not to me, anyway.
