In an odd turn of events, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli spoke and didn’t mention piracy. In fact, Yerli only lent himself to comment on the future of the Crytek engine and the possible consoles on which it will be featured within the next 3 to 4 years. Yerli gave his comments at the Games Convention Developer Conference in Liepzig in a forum called “The Future of Gaming Graphics.”
PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720 will arrive in 2011 or 2012, we think. But this is just our estimate – we don’t know. And even if Microsoft and Sony told us, I couldn’t say because it would be under NDA. But we think in three to four years’ time, although there are good reasons why it should be 2010 already…but we’ll see.
Yurli then went on to say that Crytek would have a new version of the CryEngine in 2012, which is just enough time to put it onto the Xbox 720 or PS4. Personally, I agree with Yurli on his estimate. Sony and Microsoft like to talk about these amazing decade-long plans, but they’ll dissolve quickly when developers like Crytek enter into these massive cycles aimed towards bigger and stronger devices. Let’s just hope that the next, next-generation stuff isn’t so heavy on the pocketbook, and everything comes with a hard drive that is both adequate and built-in.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I don't think the average console gamer is going to be happy if they get to the end of the game to be greeted by a 1-2fps slide show like some of us got with Crysis (on a computer that plays anything else on the market nicely with everything set high).
now the real challenge is coming up with a name that would combat the PS4 name. My guess it would either be called the 'xbox 460' or something along the lines of 'xbox 4 life'. just a guess.
Let's see, it's August, 2008. Damn, I think it would so hard to tell what's gonna happen in 2011 or 2012. There's so many variables and events happening on almost a daily basis in the world of computer rendered 3D graphics. I'm surprised Yerli would even want to hazard a guess as to which future console they'd be utilizing.
I suppose it's his job to do that though. And it makes for good blog fodder. :)
Id like to hear microsoft or sony talk about a new microsoft or sony console, rather than crytek.
Microsoft winning next next gen confirmed.
Anyway, gotta love those pirates. They're doing a service to me by influencing talented developers to go the console route.
Geometry fail. They'd be facing the same direction again, albeit dizzy.
And on topic, who cares what Yerli says. The guys at Crytek surely make nice-looking tech demos, but that hasn't led to a single good game, yet. Besides, they aren't even successfully licensing the engine, as nobody wants to make a game that only the five richest kings of Europe can play at 25fps.
Microsoft's next console will be the YBox, of course. As in, why the hell would you make an arcade model again? (and they will)
If I wanted straight eye candy I would have bought a porno.
That one just flew over your head, didn't it?
On a related note, those concept console designs sure are terrible. I don't remember ever seeing so much ugly on a single pic.
Hey, Crysis wasn't that awful...
The only two bad things I can think off right now were the hunts for the fucking rocket launchers to take down those annoying copters and the part where you had to guide the flying...something through the valleys.
And the second one doesn't count, because only later did i find out that to gain height you had to press a certain button, which made things easier by a landslide.
That joke has been made a million times before about the 360, and it was only mildly amusing then. But yeah, I don't get it, durr hurr. I can agree with your sentiments on the concept designs, though. They truly are horrible.
I think I was expecting too much from it as I found it to be a very generic FPS, Bioshock saved my FPS drought!
Fair enough. You can't blame me for calling you on it, though. Your response sounded way more like someone who's never heard the (admittedly annoying) line, than someone who's just sick of hearing it.
BECAUSE YOU TURN 720 DEGREES AND WALK AWAY
Or it heats up to 720 degrees and you have to buy a new one?
I think it flows pretty nice.
I can see how my remark could be interpreted the way you suggested, and as such I really can't complain. Which makes me the first person on the interblags to publicly admit a mistake, I guess. :)
Anyhow, here's to another hundred jokes directed at an inanimate object.
I wish I could remember where I heard that the first time. I loved how the kid was being dead serious too.
@ the topic
Does anybody honestly believe either of the systems will be lasting 10 years?
