Basically, they took away the two interesting things from the original. I've seen C2 on sale for 5 dollar (maybe even less) several times, and I still haven't picked it up, despite beating the original twice and the expansion once. I just can't give a damn about this game for some reason.
Successful games get pirated. Period. You're not the only one being pirated. Not by a long shot. And if you want to fight it, just don't take a dump all over the people who DO buy it. Fail to treat your customer right and I will have zero sympathy for your sales that follow.
I don't participate in piracy but this mentality is retarded.
@Drakengard - I take it your comment was just a general internet soundbite posted here? Because I literally can't think of a way in which Crytek were taking 'dumps' all over everybody...
I know a few PC gamers felt they had the right to steal the game because of DX11(whatever the fuck that is) or that they were owed a game that would have been impossible on consoles, or something like that... I gave up trying to figure out exactly what the fuck it is that will make gamers happy a long time ago, and I don't envy the people that try and do it for money. Because when we aren't happy we feel it encumbent upon us to rob the shit out of a hard-working team, apparently.
I think we should just get out of here before shit gets real. You know someone is going to sucker one of us into "that argument." You know the one I'm talking about.
Just walk away. Just walk away and we'll give you safe passage in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror.
2. Not everyone would have bought it if they doubted they could run it. In fact, many people who tested their system with the pirated copy, probably went on to buy it (the demo was MP, which doesn't always tell you how well SP will perform or let you fool around with settings the way you want).
3. Due to some design choices, a lot of people were disinterested in the game before it even released. Some probably assumed it would be bad, pirated it to try it out, realized it was bad, and didn't buy it.
4. EA took it off of Steam. I imagine they could have racked up a lot more sales from Steam purists. But no. They cut themselves off from a considerable chunk of PC gaming consumers. And of course, the petty ones got pissed and pirated the damn thing.
5. That general consensus you speak of: a lot of gamers thought the game was bad, told everyone else the game was bad. Not only did this encourage more try-before-you-buy torrent downloads, it likely also convinced many to simply skip the game.
I hate that their game didn't perform as well as they wanted it to, and I agree that the high piracy rate makes it look like piracy is to blame. But you have to ask yourself who is to blame for the piracy. It's not always because a bunch of assholes want to play your game without paying for it. Often times, it's for reasons you yourself could have prevented.

Crytek is a video game business. It's their job to make money, regardless of pirates. Complaining about pirates is like a shrimper complaining about sea storms, or firemen complaining about fires. It comes with the territory. If this company can't handle it and make money, there are plenty of companies that can.
1. make a great game
2. incentivize people who buy it (free dlc)
3. don't limit the game to a distribution service that often REQUIRES customers to pirate due to it's technical and customer service issues.
TLDR: mimic Valve

Good analogy. Let's follow that through, shall we? Piracy, like rape, can happen whether you like it or not. You know it's a possibility. You know that there is little hope of you stopping it if it happens. The only thing you can do is make smart choices that allow you to avoid it. It's not a girl's fault she was raped if she dressed slutty. Hell no. However, if she was dressed slutty, hanging out with a bunch of drunk dudes she doesn't know, or walking through a dark alley at two in the morning by herself, or passed out in a bedroom at a frat party after getting totally wasted, she definitely made some shitty choices that she should question from here on out. A world where a girl can dress like a slut anytime, anywhere, in any situation with no worry of rape, is a world where rape doesn't exist. This is not that world. So yeah, if you make stupid choices and something bad happens to you, you should hold yourself accountable for those choices and avoid making them in the future. Piracy exists and it will not go away anytime soon. I'm not justifying it. I'm only saying you're a fucking moron if you don't take all the right steps to avoid it. And in Crytek's case with Crysis 2, they played right into it. They were the drunk girl passed out in the frat house. Damn dummies.
Also just because your system can run Crysis 2 doesn't make it a 'strong system' but I suppose gaming on a pentium 4 does make one think that.
It's genius I tells ya!
GENIUS!
i thought that's what he wanted. why else would he come into this thread and complain about something that's not even happening? he craves the attention.
will i take the bait? no sir.
this is kind of a non article anyway. crytek hopes to do something better in their next game? well i didn't think the wanted to do something worse.
In this case I wish I'd waited a little longer. Because $7.49 for this utterly banal piece of linear console garbage was a rip-off.
It's too bad we don't have stats on how many people who pirated the game actually finished it. I'm guessing many regretting wasting so much time and bandwidth on it.

The PC market has no secondary market for used games. Most of PC game purchasing is done through Steam. Since most people in the US and the rest of the world don't shit money, they have to make decisions about what to spend their money on and what not to. This is why used games are good thing for video games. It allows a consumer to buy say Assassin's Creed 1 & 2 used for cheap at Gamestop. The consumer having heard that it has a good story, but also heard the gameplay was lacking is offered a cheaper alternative and does so. The consumer likes the games and decides to buy Revelations at full price when it comes out, maybe trading in a few old games to ease the sixty dollar cost. Thus Ubisoft GAINS a new customer and a sale is added to their bottom line.
The PC Market does not have this same luxury that consoles have. Steam, who actually understands the market they are exploiting, offsets this by having awesome sales that allow their customers to pick up some older games for cheap, adding potential day one, full price buys for the developer or game series in the future. This is why Steam is not threatened by piracy.
The best way to reduce piracy is through smart market strategies and business, not pissing and moaning about it in interviews. Believe it or not, most consumers want game companies to keep making AAA games and are willing to support them. However gaming can be an expensive investment. This is why the used market is necessary for consoles, and Steam's sales is necessary for the PC. This is also one of the many reasons why people pirate games. Better pricing and smarter business would do a lot more for their cause than bitching about it.
Ahem.
On behalf of the internet I hereby apologize to Crytek that no one wanted to buy your shitty game and elected to pirate it instead. We offer our sincerest regrets at our actions and this gift of a box filled with no-one-giving-a-fuck-about-your-next-tech-demo as compensation for whatever it is you have lost. Our bad.
or
No enemies ever appear in-game. So if you illegally downloaded the game you basically have a nice to walk through forest simulator.
I love those kind of anti-piracy tactics.
