Crysis Warhead + DRM + Amazon = It's all happening again photo

As I am sure you will all remember, Spore was at the center of quite a fiasco last month when gamers, angry at EA's continued use of the invasive DRM tool SecuROM, lashed out on Amazon, absolutely trashing it in reviews and giving it an insultingly low rating. Well, with Crysis Warhead coming out and packing that very same DRM, the chicanery is happening all over again.

So far, Crysis Warhead sits at one-and-a-half stars out of five, with 159 of 206 user reviews giving it a one. The reviews are full of warnings about DRM, one likening SecuROM to a computer virus, as the savvy consumers are doing all they can to warn the general public.

This whole thing is turning into a war of attrition between EA and its customers. While Electronic Arts reassures itself with the fact that only a small percentage of the market knows/cares about DRM, it surely can't be happy with review upon review advertising that which it tries to keep secret. At any rate, the company now knows that this issue isn't going to simply go away.

I, for one, still find this whole situation fascinating. So often do gamers let companies do what they like out of sheer apathy. It's encouraging to see some customers take a continued stand for once.

[Thanks, Wardrox]

Are they trying to make it easier to pirate games than buy them? That's what SecuROM does.

Yeah. This could all be "coincidental," but my once a monster PC (2 years ago, it was near the top of the line) started underperforming at general tasks after I installed Bioshock (demo, yes, the demo came with Securom) and Crysis.

And the best part about SecuROM? It gets cracked by pirates within hours of a game's release.

It's not whether only "a small percentage of the market knows/cares about DRM" it's the principle that they are installing software without your consent. They could then just start taking $1 out of your bank account every month. Sure, only a small percentage will notice/care for that dollar, but it's still friggin' illegal and it's still harmful to you. Just like SecuROM.

The other point is that SecuROM has been epicly proven to be useless, remember, Spore was out and cracked a full week before the official release.

Viva Steam!!

"And the best part about SecuROM? It gets cracked by pirates days before a game's release."

Fixed.

I fucking love it.

A person who may not know a whole lot about Securom and DRM is going to take a look at the review and have second thoughts.

And hopefully they'll buy Left4Dead instead. Steam is still DRM, but won't totally kill your computer like Securom.

I've got Warhead. I'd give it one and a half stars for being pretty much identical to the original and the alleged performance improvements being nowhere to be seen. Got bored after 45 mins and haven't played it since. Having the game pause and hitch every other minute does not a good game make.

DRM killed my family. And all of your familes, too, judging by the comments.

It's a shame. Warhead is a really nice sequel to the original. But I fully sympathize with the crowd on fucking things up for EA. It's not that they're obliged to use SecuROM.

Keep it up, anonymous mob!

As long as people continue to take a stand and be heard things might change. If I had an Amazon account I would post on there giving it a one as well.

I'm not touching any game that has a DRM on it, this also hurts the resale of the game which I believe is the #1 thing that they are trying to change. They could care less if you install this on your friends computer, they don't want a loss in purchases from someone waiting to get a used copy.

I think it's pretty damn interesting too, especially as to whether the negative attention will have any effect, or whether EA will pat attention to no-one but the dead presidents on it's dollar bills.

I might have bought it I don't care about it that much, but with SecuROM nah what little desire i had to impulse buy the game is now gone.

I won't even get it on steam since SecuROM is still there even on steam.

red alert 3 will probably be cracked and pirated in a few days. its a popular game and DRM is going to ruin EA's sales as long as they keep this 5 install nonsense up.
