Cryptic offering lifetime Champions Online subscriptions photo

There are subscription advantages to pre-ordering Champions Online. According to a Eurogamer report, Cryptic Studios is offering a gargantuan deal (and a tiny deal) for those with some clink in their pocket and a belief in Cryptic’s ability to deliver in the MMO space. Until the end of August, pre-orderers have the ability to opt-in to a lifetime membership with tangible benefits. Priced at 200 bucks, the lifetime membership includes freedom from monthly subscription charges, unique Champions Online armor, a beta key for Star Trek Online, and a figurine, nine character slots, and bonus Star Trek Online armor.

Talk about big. The tiny deal is gives pre-orderers the option to get a six-month membership for 60 bucks and a beta invite to Star Trek Online.

You can see, plainly, that Cryptic wants excited players to stick with the game.

Champions Online is due out this September for the PC and you can also nab bonuses from brick and mortar stores, too.

This sort of deal would make more sense if it were on offer a few months after the game's launch, when a player can determine if this is the sort of thing they might play for 2.5+ years. Right now, it just seems like a timeshare-esque ploy to nab rubes.

I'm excited about Champions, but come on, I haven't even put in five minutes on it yet.

Hrm, at first I was like "Wow, I'd pay 200 dollars for a life time of a online game" and then I realized I almost thought about paying 200 dollars on a game that didn't come with a whole bunch of fisher price toys.

It is a good idea though, life time membership and all - it wouldn't take that long to start saving money the way things are priced these days. It would sorta be like buying a game console - of which you'll be using on and off for the next few years.

Hey, I had a lifetime subscription to Hellgate:London and what happened there?

The last game I know about that offered a life time membership was Hell gate London. And well...we all know what happened to that piece of shit.

@snotrocket LotRO did as well, and it's still going fairly strong. Anyone who got in that at the beginning has saved a fair amount by now.

I wouldn't take the risk until I knew the game would survive. Not just survive, but be fairly popular. Who wants to be in a dead online game?

At the same time, it isn't a bad offer. I understand the reason behind offering it. I don't think the offer should be compared to Hellgate really, two different games. In Hellgate's case, I think it was a cheap underhanded ploy to get more money from a turd of a game.

Talk about a big gamble, pay a lot of money and enjoy a lifetime of fun, or pay a lot of money and regret it forever.

I got burned by Hellgate London as well... but Flagship had some flimsy deals going on for their hosting and whatnot. So at least we know the exact same thing won't happen. Hopefully it doesn't go the way of Tabula Rasa though. *sigh* I miss Tabula Rasa.
I still throw in a few months into City of Heroes every year. I'm sure I've paid over $200 for City of Heroes over the past few years. This might be worth it for my annual super hero fix. Hopefully, it will stick around for a few years so I can get value from it.

That's a huge gamble. A great deal, but a huge gamble.

I find this hilarious simply because Bill Roper, one of the guys behind Champions, was also behind another game with lifetime subs. Hellgate.

hrm...what Pangloss said, it's too much before the actual game comes out. it's a very nice offer, but it's too expensive for me to risk it right now.

then again, I'm sort of wishy-washy with MMOs; I play one for a month and get tired, then maybe want to play, say, half a year later. it'd be nice if I was always subscribed, since it's annoying to keep cancelling and resubscribing, but for something I don't play so intensely, I suppose it'd be a waste.

well considering all the other goodies it's really just $100 for a liftetime sub.

so in essence you break even in about 8 months... I'm sure the game will survive that long.

If I'd had an option like this on WoW or City of Heroes, it would have more than paid for the time that I've put in for either of them... Really the deciding point will be how the open beta goes for me, I think. I'm already in for a pre-order, but I want to feel how it plays before I drop the big bucks.
