Cryptic: Lack of MMOs on Xbox Live is 'baffling' photo

With the popularity of MMOs on PCs and the comparative lack of alternatives on home consoles, Microsoft should be jumping at the chance to get more massively-multiplayer fun on the Xbox 360. However, the company is more concerned with hemming and hawing over how such games would conflict with Xbox Live rather than getting a slice of the action, and Cryptic CCO Jack Emmert is baffled by it.

"Microsoft’s a big company, and they have to work out all the various issues related to MMOs," explains Emmert. "It just takes time for the big beast known as Microsoft to get moving. I really have no explanation other than that, because it’s as baffling to developers as it is to everyone else."

An Xbox 360 version of Champions Online is all ready to go, but Microsoft's insistence on dragging its heels means that Cryptic has no clue when it will hit the system.

"This year? I don’t know," he states. "Right now we’re just talking with Microsoft. Right now the ball is firmly in their court. We’re ready to go, but until we get the go ahead from Microsoft, right now we’re sort of waiting."

I'm fairly certain the main issue is that Microsoft doesn't want a developer making money from Xbox Live if it doesn't get its cut. I'm sure once Microsoft finds a way to rob and rape its customers even more through MMOs, it will be more than happy to let the genre invade the Xbox 360.

I really don't think it's a good business move to bring a mmo to the 360. How would they deal with the problem of so many people having nearly full 20gb hdds?

With Sony having a deal with NCsoft, The Agency and DCU:Online ... it would be foolish of Microsoft to drag it's heals any longer.

Strike whilst the iron's hot MS and get in there before Sony!

Free online, mature user base, Blu-ray, universal HDD - the PS3 is the PERFECT MMO machine!

Some HDD's, some without, Payed online, greedy provider, mainly 12-16 year old userbase (griefers) - So uh yeah, the 360 is obviously the best place to put MMO's - fuck off.

The 360 really is crying out for an MMO. Microsoft need to put their greed to one side on this one.

Microsoft with an MMO that uses an already priced online subscription service not getting its cut of the pie??? This is purely a delay to figure out what profit percentage they want.

I just hope any new MMOs are easier to sign up to than FFXI, I so wanted to play it yet it was just so confusing, I was hoping all you would have to do is insert the disk.

This game works really well with the 360 controller to. Of course there are a few things you can't do, but it's fairly spot on.

We too are baffled. However it is probably the stance that Microsoft has on updates and patches that is the culprit.

This makes me sad because many of my Final Fantasy 11 friends play on the 360 due to their PC being out-dated and they prefer to use the game console they have to play it. So this blow balls because when I get into FF14 I want them to play with me no matter what system.

This is the reason why Square-Enix gave the "go" on the PS3, because they don't have any issues with PSN. Microsoft should give silver account access to all MMO games because people are already paying a monthly subscription to the MMO game.

I think part of it is how M$ wants a piece of the pie and also how they will be forced to justify already getting a piece (even without the MMO).

An MMO requiring an XBL Gold subscription is a double violation of my, "will never pay 2 play", rule. I have to agree that an MMO is better suited to a free play network, not a subscription based one.

Its simple. MMOs cost too much money and time. They also lack the structure of a normal games. Add the huge amount of games 360 receives into its catalogue everyweek, and the people that buy them, and you'll understand why MMOs would cut into such gaming.

On PC, there's less competition from other games, larger hard drive space.

I'd be surprised if anyone that plays MMOs, plays more than a select three of them (some of which will be free to play). Anymore than this, and those gamers may be compromising work, life and everything else.

Its also about the type of universe devs are trying to sell. If something like CrimeCraft or APB comes on 360, then I'm more likely to buy and play. Champions Online I can't say I will, be cause I hate generic superheroes/villains, and it doesn't appeal to me.

So if an MMO is
1: Free to play

2: Has a unique universe and gameplay, that appeals and is more than just more boring fantasy guff.

3: Works around the players time, not the other way around.

If an MMO can meet these requirements on console, then I'd check one or two out.

I don't understand... Didnt' they work all of this logistical shit out with FFXI? You only needed a Silver membership to play it, and Square-Enix takes the monthly membership. Or does MS only care about this latest one because it would have a larger user base?

If you don't hook someone with an MMO, it usually dies pretty fast. Look at Star Wars Galaxies, Matrix Online, etc. While they don't last a few years, mainstays like Everquest, Eve Online, Ragnarock, and WoW downright dominate.
It's a major gamble, one PCs can make because they can make them more "pay for exclusive content" vs "pay for the game and monthly service...even if the MMO sucks." I don't think it is a risk MS or Sony seem willing to take.

Also, do the moderators even care about the community anymore? Reborn and Sexualchocolate have been trolling their PS3 fanboy shit all over these threads and nobody gives a fuck. I came here for the community, if I wanted news with a shitty, unmoderated community I'd stick with joystiq. Do something, dammit.

it's simple the real reason everything got put on hold was the added micro transactions to champions online.

everything was ago ...green lights flashing ...then all of a sudden work got shifted too we are gonna work on the ui for the pc ...then the original release got set back for about two months in that time the added ui "was the micro transactions" or cryptic bucks.

so basically Microsoft wants to nickle and dime too...well since cryptic is gonna be doing it......i don''t see the xbox version happening anytime soon .

or it should be out around the time duke nukem forever comes out.

True, not every user is like that, but the same can be said about the 360.

Congrats fellas. You're single-handedly bringing the PS3 to the 360 level. Bravo.

So what you want is an edited community that only consists of post of which you approve?

Sure, it's ridiculous that some people feel they need to chime in and dis MS/praise Sony at every chance they get (or the other way around), but it's not like they're legitimately ruining anything.

And on topic, my question is, why does MS need to get a slice of the MMO subscription pie when they already get the fee for Live itself?

Doesn't make much sense to me since Sony seems to be more accepting even without an online fee.

I hope MS doesn't gouge the MMO companies TOO much. It's hard enough to make it in the MMO business as it is.

Wonder if it has something to do with the need for dedicated servers. You obviously can't run an mmo over p2p.

Look what happened with Final Fantasy XI and what's currently happening with Final Fantasy XIV. Microsoft is too restrictive on server architecture. Their protocols don't jive with MMO development. P2P connections don't work for that kind of game.

1. Servers. They would need to be run by and maintained by Microsoft. That would also mean they would get that cut of the monthly fee and would cause issues communication between them and the Devs, the result would probably be longer down time. This might solve the cost issue if its say 15$ a month and Microsoft gets X% that would go to server maintainence normally. Server techs are a separate team from Devs to begin with so this might not be a big problem, but I highly doubt you can find a game company willing to split their profits.

Another side to this is if the servers are Microsoft run then there wont be cross PC/Console play. Microsoft would need to develope their own MMO specifically for consoles, which might not be a bad idea.

2. Hard drive space. Many people still have 20gb HDs, and if you have played any MMOs recently you can see where the problem is there (keeping in mind you dont actually get anywhere near the 20gb to use). With constant patching/content updates that comes with any MMO this can cause problems. It might work for something like say... Guild Wars. Especially with that games control structure (limit to 8 abilities). But whose going to play an older MMO thats probably got a relatively dead community?

3. Controls. There are very few MMOs that dont require you to use 20+ keybinds, and that dinky little keyboard attachment wont cut it. Add to that the sheer amount of menus you have to use and youve got a very clunky control scheme. They would have to completely remake the interface and tailor it for a console, and we all know how lazy devs are. Im not saying you cant get an MMO to port to consoles but I wouldnt expect any existing games to be ported, I hope upcoming MMO games take this into consideration early on in the development.

Theres also the lack of chat. I mean, voice chat is great and all but do you really want regular chat voiced? Think Trade and Barrens chat, do you want 20-50+ 13 year olds screaming in the same channel?

What I mean by Guild Wars as an example is both its control scheme and streaming. If you could unload unneeded data and just redownload each area every time then you would cut down on HD storage, and because the game is heavily instanced it might even work lol.

The loading times would be ridiculous if they did that. Doesn't GW only download the area the first time you go there, and then it stays on your HDD?

Paying a monthly fee for games is something I'm not fond of right up there with nickle and dime'ing, so you can imagine I'm not big on MMOs.

To pay the monthly fee on an MMO for the 360 should of course not require LIVE Gold membership but at the same time don't you think you should reap some kind of huge discount for it? Because let's be honest here, chances are you ARE paying for LIVE rather than holding out on Silver for something like this.

With Guild Wars 2 touting non-instanced explorable world and world PvP with instanced missions and dungeons I think we should begin to question the monthly fees for MMOs or at least the standard of the 15 bucks a month subscription. If you've been playing any MMO for over a year you have to start asking yourself "This game is good but is it 180 dollars good?".

@Hawks

Microsoft doesn't need to own the servers for an MMO on their console, for Battlefield 1943 you're actually playing on EA's servers. You could say they'd like to own them but it's not necessary.

As to Guild Wars 1 that'd work nicely on the 360 but it's not an MMO, it's more akin to Phantasy Star Online/Universe, in that towns and outposts are MMO but everywhere else is instanced.

Oh perhaps something like a 'light' MMO like Freelancer, Hardwar, and NeverWinter Nights 1 & 2s persistent servers? Those could get over the HD limitation thing since similar to GW they load and unload areas while the game remains non-instanced.
Midgetsnowman's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/28/2009 22:08

@Yehat: why should there be a discount? Microsoft's live service doesnt even cover the price of servers that aren't completely unrelated to them. What you're asking for is like going to a cable company, getting their cable service, then going to the phone company and demanding cheaper DSL
Yehat's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/28/2009 22:51
Yehat
@Midgetsnowman

That analogy doesn't work since your cable & DSL company don't manufacture your television, phone and computer as well Cable is in competition with DSL. If your phones, tvs and computers were all manufactured by the same company that only had the ability to run on said manufacturer's service then your analogy would work.

If you want to still use that analogy then let's narrow the field, shall we? Let's say your TV is somehow made by Comcast Cable and you're not obliged to use the Comcast Cable service. You can still use it as a TV for tapes and what have you but you have to pay for Comcast Cable to have Cable. Through some demonic forces this Comcast TV cannot accept AT&T cable so it's either cable from Comcast or no fuzzy dice. Now you see there's a channel out there you want and can pay a subscription without needing to get cable. Great! Now you would think that if you already had this one and only cable it would say open you to benefits to the premium channels. Now that doesn't unreasonable does it?

Now that's not a perfect analogy after all there's no 'signal receiving' subscription payments in television as well as there's no such thing as a single brand cable only working on a single manufacturer's tv but you get the idea.
