Croixleur Sigma

Croixleur Sigma is hard to pronounce, but fun to play

Devil May Cute returns, and is better than ever

Doujin hack-and-slasher Croixleur debuted on western shores early last year, and it packed quite a punch. The game drew inspiration from the Devil May Cry series' Bloody Palace mode, pitting players against waves of enemies, massive bosses, and time. It was well-crafted but also very austere, featuring very little outside of a solid arcade experience.

A year later, Souvenir Circ. and Nyu Media have returned with Croixleur Sigma, a new and improved version now available via Steam and other digital retailers.

Released: April 30, 2014
MSRP: $7.99

So, what's new this time around? Well, a lot actually. The most significant adds include a two-player co-operative multiplayer mode and a second story campaign starring the main protagonist's golden-haired rival, Francesca Storaro. There are also some mild visual enhancements, a decent challenge mode, full Japanese voice acting, new weapons, online leaderboards, and Steam integration like trading cards and achievements. It's all very nice.

Despite all the new facets, though, Sigma isn't all that different from last year's game. Truth be told, running the old alongside the new, I found it difficult to tell the versions apart. Aside from some superficial flourishes, new lighting effects, and change of hues, any differences that exist are pretty minimal. And the game is so fast-paced that it's really hard to notice anyway.

At its core, Croixleur Sigma is still a spartan action game. Players will slash, dash, and repeat; dispatching enemies and collecting coins in a race against time. It's exhilarating and mechanically sound, but also decidedly one-note. The original game was simplistic to a fault, and that's something the new additions, no matter how welcome, don't really remedy.

Still, Croixleur is a good bit of fun. And Sigma is even better, especially for those hunting for something to play with a buddy for an afternoon. Considering the modest asking price, this is definitely something action fans would do well to check out.

For those that have played the original, you really don't have a reason not to take Croixleur Sigma for a spin. The good people at Nyu Media are providing free upgrades to folks who own the first game. So do make sure to take them up on that offer. As for everyone else, you can grab it here.

Went to play MGSV, got prompted to download the MGO data; it's not on the PS Store yet. Or maybe it's Kojima-san's way of telling me it's not the real MGO data, but is instead a janitor who once protected me from a puddle of pee and now wears my face.

Recently watched the Cannon Films documentary, by the director of Not Quite Hollywood. Super entertaining, hilarious, and it almost made me want to watch some of the Cannon films. Almost.

Tip for those who have plasma TVs and are playing MGSV; go into settings and make the weapon icon only appears when you're aiming. I had to buy a new TV because the weapon icon got permanently burned into my plasma.

I was excited to learn one of my favorite Philip K. Dick novels, The Man in the High Castle, would be receiving its own TV show. After watching the pilot, I'm cautiously optimistic. Looking forward to the rest in November.

I'm going to be honest; this is my new favourite line in anything ever. GOTY 2015 and all that. Also cocks: [img][/img]
I thought Laura Kate's Destiny piece for Polygon was pretty neat.

Bungie have decided Kojima isn't the only one who can do 4th wall breaking shenanigans. Congratulations Destiny players, you're all now The Taken King.
I have (jokingly) wanted a remake/sequel to Geist. And then I went to YouTube to watch a longplay to see it in action again and thought, "nevermind!"
