Criterion's Need for Speed shown off today for first time photo

Just not to you.

Burnout developer Criterion has tweeted that it will be revealing its upcoming Need for Speed title today for the first time. Here's the catch -- it's being shown off internally at Electronic Arts, which means you ain't seeing squat. This internal meeting (and the public admission of such) is a good indicator that we will be seeing something soon, perhaps as early as GDC in March (but more likely E3 June).

Rumors had surfaced that this Need for Speed game would be subtitled "Out of the Law," but the developer quickly squashed that. Because that sounds like some nonsense that was run through Babel Fish, and it can do better than that.

Might I suggest Need for Speed: OMFG Did You See How Fast That Car Flipped Over and Then Exploded?

Need for Speed will be shown for... [@CriterionGames]

All I want is a Burnout game like Burnout 2 and 3 on the PS3 and 360, without all the open city bullshit. I like menus.

I agree. Burnout Paradise, while good, annoyed me slightly in that if you felt like doing one particular type of event, Road Rage, for example, it would be a five to ten minute drive to the next. Also before the update the inability to restart the race was annoying, but that was fixed.

I'd like something like a mash-up of Takedown and Revenge. I liked the Aftertouch system.

But without the open city, you couldn't do Freeburn and Timed Challenges. Also no Road Rules which are what made the bikes so awesome (along with the online modes). I think the next game will be more like Big Surf Island than Paradise City though.

Also, in Criterion I trust.

To me, the open city-ness of Paradise was the best thing in the game. I could spend hours not doing any event in particular, just exploring around, crashing billboards and shortcuts.

@hermes - I was the same, spent the first 4hr session on it just driving around :)

In the end though, it didn't really take all *that* long to get to events you hadn't already done. Worth it for the timed Road Rules and sense of go anywhere during Stunt mode. Finding a massive string of stunts was particularly pleasing, and something that could've only happened in such a game structure.
I didn't like the Crash Road Rules though, they were very average. No interesting vehicles other than buses for mults (and their appearance pretty random), and just a prety much infinite degree of control trying to hit one or two cars at a time... it lost the impact (sorry) of previous Burnouts.

I wouldn't like to second guess their output, but as CelicaCrazed said, in Criterion I trust.
