Criterion details upcoming Burnout Paradise update with store, restarts, more photo

On February 6, Criterion Games will be issuing a huge and free update to Burnout Paradise. The developer has just detailed all of the changes on the official Web site, and it's nothing short of ridiculously impressive.

For instance, the PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the game will be getting an in-game "Burnout Store." Here, you'll be able to buy new content like cars and the upcoming Party Pack without having to leave the game. The game will also be getting a much-asked-for "restart" feature that will allow you to restart events without having to drive all the way back to start point (which was totally horrible). This is a feature many gamers have been crying for since release, so it's great to see Criterion listening.

Head over to their Web site for the full list of updates (and images), including info on visual changes, game balancing, and more. It's a big one, and almost guarantees I'll be popping Burnout Paradise back into my console in two weeks.

The main reason I'll get this game soon is because Criterion has been giving it such great support since launch, with most of the new content being free as well. THAT is how a developer earns my customer loyalty, opposed to charging ~$10 for 3 maps (example - Microsoft published games like Halo 3 & Gears 2).

Restart feature!!? Thank god they finally caved on that one. I understand their reasoning behind it and their "vision", but when your vision becomes detrimental to the player's experience you need to bend it a little.

I'm glad I bought it later, and for £15 you can't go wrong.

Many of my friends will buy it as soon as the Legendary car pack is availiable too :)

I'm glad they're still adding to a game, rather than adopting the "It's out, now lets get the next game ready and ignore the problems with the first"!

I'm so glad I bought this game! They really are exploiting connectivty and DLC in the most positive way possible. It really puts everyone else (so far) to shame in that category.

@galagabug - No doubt that Criterion are serious about Burnout.

Wait a minute...I thought everyone agreed that MS sets prices for DLC when Jon Blow claimed he had no choice but to make his Braid theme 250 pts. So, how is it that Criterion is able to make their DLC free?

Which is it- does MS set the prices for DLC or do the developers do it?

@akathatoneguy:

That's a really good question; I guess I'm kind of unclear on it myself. If I were to guess, I'd say that maybe Criterion/EA have a bit more clout than Blow or The Behemoth. Although, that's just speculation.

I think, so far as premium skina, none of those from third parties are going for free.

Clarification on how DLC/XBLA pricing works would be interesting, to say the least.

You gotta love Criterion. If they keep up with this I'll never need another racing game.

@Nick: Yet, it's the same excuse Epic used with the DLC maps for Gears 1, and Epic has clout. I think the deal may be that Sony may not care if they let it be free, so MS sure as fuck isn't going to let Sony have that over them so they'll let it be free too.

Also came in here to give props to Criterion. I may just have to pick this game up after all.

Nice!! Can't wait!! I've been wanting to get back into Paradise City after I realized that people keep stealing my Gold Street signs from me.

I really hope EA flexed some muscle and told Microsoft to let this be free or not have it at all, because if EA is going to release this for free then its obvious they dont care about making money on it... which in turn means they wont be afraid to let DLC go directly to PC and PS3 and circumvent 360.

This is a trend I hope more publishers take with Microsoft.

It's worth picking up, for sure. I think it's relatively cheap now, too. I've been starting to play again recently, and these upcoming updates have me pretty pumped.

Restart = awesome. Now I may be able to fully love this game the same way I loved Burnout 3.

Criterion continues the awesomeness trend! hell yes. As for DLC pricing, themes aren't technically DLC for in-game content, but I guess the Blow didn't have as much say over microsoft as well... DLC on 360 is very vague.

I feel awful that they made barrel rolls easier now. I couldn't get them easily, but when I did, it felt like I achieved something. Also, although many would love the restarts, it kind of goes against the free flow of the game and cause a constant restart / race / restart to obsessive perfection routine. Otherwise, if you weren't successful in a race, you just went on to something else refreshing.. I know its optional but I'll probably will go into the restart routine, it is tempting.

I feel worse about the auto-barrel roll thing, tho.

Lol it's not even out for PC yet. But anything that streamlines the game like that makes me interested. I eventually got sick of all the old Burnouts with the constant reloading times and startup crap everytime you had to restart something.

Well game update does not = DLC...so maybe it's a loophole?
