Creative Assembly isn't threatened by console strategy games photo

While console-based real-time strategy games have made a lot of progress in recent years, we're still quite a bit off from seeing them match what's happening on the PC gaming scene.

Having recently released Empire: Total War, The Creative Assembly studio director Mike Simpson is all hot and bothered about the subject right now. As a matter of fact, he even spoke to GamesIndustry.biz to set the record straight.

"I don't think that for PC strategy games... I don't think it's a threat. There's certainly no sign from our franchise that's happening. We're always looking at ways to expand it, rather than working on an assumption that it's going to decline," he said.

Simpson also mentions the fact that much of what's being done -- in terms of pure graphical might -- is dependent on the console lifespan. Similar to previous generations, we'll eventually reach a point where certain games "can only be made with the power of PCs." Agree? Disagree?

I think that we'll see a lot more console RTSs in the future, but I think that they'll become a very different breed to the current PC type, a lot more action orientated and simplified. Halo Wars is a good benchmark for how I think the genre will develop on consoles, while the 'hardcore' RTS games will stay on PC

Im not sure if PCs will be the only power that can make certain games. Consoles have made big leaps in power over the last few years where it seems as of late PCs havent made as big of a jump. But atleast for the foreseeable future PCs can still be built to outpower a console and certain games will be better suited on the PC.

Honestly i hope consoles give PCs a huge run for thier money...the competetion could make for some amazing products for us all to enjoy...

I agree that pc rts is safe from console rts. I mean how are you supposed to download mods for the console? Let's not even talk about the mouse keyboard controller issue...

I love RTS, on both console and PC. I'd like to see more for console, but that's only because I haven't upgraded my PC in a few years!

/me waits for Diablo 3/Starcraft 2 benchmarks and system reqs...

I've been saying this for a while. The console just can't handle -certain types- of strategy games. Turn-based affairs, especially RPG-style, strategy games are fine on the console. Total War style games = no way. Hardcore 'craft and C&C style games = only with lots of simplifications.

Don't you think you should mention that Creative Assembly IS working on a console RTS? They're making Stormrise, with their coveted "Whip-Select" ganeplay mechanic/brand.

I believe that consoles could easily unseat PC RTSs - the only catch is that you have to make the game compatible with mouse and keyboard. This is the only thing that prevents detailed, intricate RTSs on consoles. For a heavy-duty RTS you need speed and control, and two joysticks and a few buttons simply cannot provide that. Other than that, why wouldn't RTSs see an increase on consoles? They're cheaper and more people have them. In the future, I imagine that we'll see a convergence between consoles and PCs, it's already happening now.

I don't get it. Why would it matter to them if a console RTS does well? If they can make a good rts then what the fuck is the problem?

Until console controllers have 10 keys for groups and 20 other hotkeys, hardcore RTS is just not going to happen. Even though the console rts-lite games can be fun.

Well, yeah, just like every other generation. Five minutes after a console goes into production, a PC is made that surpasses it in every aspect. There's no doubt that PC games always have, and always will be able to make more intensive and/or pretty games than the consoles of their day.

The question is, will anyone make them? That's much more uncertain. Whether you blame the money (and/or technical knowhow) needed for a rig or piracy, there's a lot fewer customers (as opposed to players) for PC titles these days.

hitnrun, i disagree. Just because a PC has the ability to produce better looking games doesnt mean better looking games will be built for the PC.

There isn't anything that will take over from the PC for a real RTS, however small downloadable titles like Age of Booty are perfect for consoles

There is no way console strategy games will ever be like PC strategy games. Not unless consoles start using a keyboard and mouse as the default controllers.
