Crashes and drama surround Elemental's launch photo

This is just painful. The new Stardock strategy game for PC, Elemental: War of Magic, is going through a rough time: its launch this week has been met with game-breaking bugs and crashes, much to the dissatisfaction of fans. But wait, the situation gets worse.

On the Quarter to Three forums, outspoken Stardock CEO Brad Wardell responded to criticism with the following post: "Also, to anyone, like you Ben, saying the game is like an 'early beta' then well, please stay away from our games in the future. I consider it ready for release and if others disagree, don't buy our games."

Even worse, "The Gamer's Bill of Rights," which Wardell had a hand in creating, says "Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state." Of course, follow-up emails have since been sent. Joystiq got a statement from the CEO apologizing for his reaction to upset fans.

"I spoke hastily and said things I shouldn't have." Continuing: "I want to be clear that my comments on the Quarter to Three forums do not reflect my team at large. They were words spoken out of frustration and sleep deprivation and I am truly sorry."

Make sure to read the statement in full at Joystiq.

They could have used a better internal QA team and probably another month of time if they really wanted to make a finished game.

What's REALLY funny is the fanboys on their forums claiming anyone who says they have a crash is a troll. Good times

Man, I already learnt my lesson with Demigod. Unplayable at launch. Totally broken matchmaking, unstable, sound glitches, etc etc. I swore I'd never touch a Stardock game again, and it looks like I was wise to do so.

They don't want to pay for QA, so they make their best customers the unofficial QA team, and then the CEO gets indignant when someone calls him on it.

Well don't worry, Brad, I will have no trouble staying far away from your crummy titles.

I call BS on this. I've been playing Elemental for review and it hasn't crashed on me once. It's been very stable.

It's unfortunate that Brad had to give these mopes attention by responding to their BS.

The great irony, as pointed out, is that Brad Wardell helped pen the Gamer's Bill of Rights and then is welching on a promise. How can Mr. Wardell expect other publishers to adhere to the rights he believes consumers should have when he himself doesn't hold his company to that ideal?

I also want to point out that the author states that the game has been met with bugs and crashes as if it was a fact. I doubt that they've played the game or know first hand any issues with the game. The author of the piece may be misinforming people by stating such things as fact. Just an FYI.

I think I'll wait to see what happens with this. It looks interesting (not overly keep on the art style, however) but I think I'll hold off until a price drop or a bunch of patches come out.

Shooooooocking. They set a release date of either this month, or next year, based on retail scheduling. I could tell the game wasn't anywhere near retail ready based on the beta, but for some reason they decided to push it out now anyways. Stardock hasn't learned anything apparently. I dunno if they were desperate to release before Civ V or what, but it was a pretty stupid move.

Hmmm, I'm not too worried. Stardock tends to release extensive and continuous updates to their games (Demigod wasn't their game, they only published it). So I'll believe that it's not worth the money now, but it'll definitely be worth it in a month or so.

Stardock didn't produce Demigod they only published it, Gas Powered Games are the people that made Demigod. The last game Stardock made was Galactic Civilizations 2 and it was quite an excellent game too.

It's a shame Elemental has had a poor release, I didn't even know it was out already! Though I wonder if the game is any good as despite day 1 game breaking bugs a game still be excellent such as, y'know, every game released by DICE.

I will probably wait for a month or so for them to fix it before I buy it. The game looks pretty interesting and I am sure that Stardock will fix it soon enough.

Ehh i played for 5 or 6 hours last night and didn't notice any game breaking bugs. The one thing I though was a bug when I did the math turns out they do multiplicative math for +% effects instead of additive so that's not a bug its just not the norm. Also, had one crash which isn't so bad since most MMOs or online games will give you a random discon at least once every three hours. Plus there was a patch this morning that fixed my main gripe about unintuitive UI. Its certainly not the best game Stardock has done but by no means a bad game.

If only we could come up with a situation where we can get Stardock to impose their ideas onto other developers, perhaps some that are more capable...

Well they released the game earlier than they had their Day 0 patch ready for because its street date was broken so they wanted it into customers hands and that did cause some problems. I had several issues, memory leaks, weird gameplay breaking bugs, and odd occurences. However since the patch I have had very few issues, my main problem is a lack of ability to Alt+Tab which I'm always doing to talk to someone.

The game itself is awesome, it's really deep and really fun. I'm deffinitely glad I bought it, no doubt about it.

As for people saying Demigod is an indication of past wrongs, Stardock didn't make Demigod, Gas Powered Games did, so I'm not sure what pointt that makes. It's like saying Valve sucks because they sold some shitty game on Steam.

I don't know... the game feels pretty complete to me!

Then again, I've been in the beta since they opened it up last September, so I guess compared to the really bare bones early betas just about anything looks complete.

Also @Dr Pups
I think they did Sins of a Solar Empire between this and Galactic Civ II.

I trust that Stardock will fix the issues. Yeah it sucks that Brad went a little off the handle and that the game seems to be lacking some polish, but at least he apologized.

This just seems like one of those times where a developer rushes to get their game out to avoid having to announce a delay or something when it's not quite ready.

I bought the game yesterday at 8pm central, was playing it for hours and had a great time. It didn't crash once. There were / are some bugs, but it didn't really feel "unfinished." It is rough around the edges but the spirit and feel of what they promised is there.

Negatory, Ironclad Games made Sins of a Solar Empire.

whooooaa. I never knew that. For some reason, I always thought that they had done Sins.

Well, that means they worked on Elemental for waaaay longer than I thought.

I just wanted to quickly chime in on my experience.

The pre-day 0 launch wouldn't run at all on my machine. So I deleted it.

The day 0 version is running fine.

That sucks. Up until now Stardock has had an excellent track record for developed games.

Frogboy is a stand-up guy and solid business owner. The whole situation is really getting blown out of proportion by some looking to create turmoil where there is none.

I know for a fact at least 50 volunteer QA tests spent hundreds of hours testing the game prior to release but sadly one can account for everything. SD has been going none stop to correct problems found with the game played on systems in the wild.

The game is solid and the company backing it fully - you really cant ask for more to be frank.

I played in this game's beta as well and I don't feel like it's a royally broken product, but it does need some major patching, I feel the issue is made worse for the fact that not everyone is going to register the game via Impulse to patch, meaning there playing without the day zero patch.

Which.... you know.... makes the game work.
