Crackdown 2 paid DLC revealed

11:00 AM on 07.06.2010   |   Jim Sterling

Crackdown 2 paid DLC revealed photo

Crackdown 2 was released yesterday, and those who bothered to check out the game's Avatar Awards will have discovered that plans are already in place for premium DLC.

This content will be required in order to unlock certain Awards that are currently unobtainable, meaning that when Ruffian could have been spending time and money to create a Crackdown 2 that wasn't an expansion pack, it was instead working on DLC. That's actually kind of insulting.

Two add-on packs have been outed -- Toybox and Deluge. Little is known about them, except for the fact that to unlock the awards, you'll need to complete "Fly Swat" in Toybox, and play fifteen minutes of "Maim" in Deluge. Maybe this is where all the original content is hiding? Who knows?

Toy Box sounds like "Keys to the city" to me.

Deluge sounds like a Horde style mode, and Toybox sounds like fun with physics or something similar. Either way, they both sound like they're laughing at the customer who paid $60 for a game that essentially rates as an expansion as dictated by everyone I've spoken to. Insulting the customer indeed.

I dont mean to be quite so negative, but the first game was a lot of fun, and this one just seems to be a straight, lazy cash in with no real new content to speak of minus some skin changes. Oh well, at least we still have InFamous 2 for our superhero game desires.

That IS insulting. Awards that you pay extra to unlock. DLC has hit a new low. I fear it's just gonna get worse.
Next we'll be paying to enter boss fights. There'll be "open world" games where you have to pay a toll to enter other areas. FPS games will require you to buy ammo, racing games you need insurance... You see where it's going. And it will all convienetly be linked to you're credit cards.
The future of gaming ladies and gentlemen... Embrace it.

@ Corduroy Turtle

LOL @ LOL'ing @ inFAMOUS 2

So far anyways The Crackdown games have impressed me the least out of any 360 title I've played. They're really generic, and even the most generic of games have atleast something in terms of gameplay or popularity to hang their hat on. Not so with Crackdown, which in my opinion is nowhere near as good as inFAMOUS.

I don't see anyone actually saying that the DLC was premium other than the title in the Eurogamer article, Microsoft HAS released DLC for free in the past.

@ VolksONER:

That doesn't sound too far off. That why I still play PS2 and earlier. I refuse to embrace stuff like that. Ever.

Actually Ruffian didn't even develop the premium DLC for Crackdown 2. A contracting company called Split Milk did.

Remember that scene in The Dark Crystal when all the mystics chant that one deep tone for like, two minutes? Well, replace that tone with "meh" and there ya go.

Well then the budget given to spilt milk could have been used on extra development time?

That makes sense right?

this game is gonna to be bought when it hits bargain bins, unless they announce a proper sequel instead.

@Antinash While you make a valid point, at the same time it is the principal of the thing, that there was paid DLC planned for a game that to many feels incomplete in it's current form. And the amusing thing is the DLC they're apparently adding doesnt expand the core game like it probably should.

Bust still, relax, if this was Kotaku, you'd have already been permanently banned

@ArcticFox oh don't get me wrong, I totally agree that this DLC is cheap with the game just out, and I really take issue to the fact that Ruffian couldn't even be bothered to develop it themselves. I just thought I'd let people know about this and let them come to their own conclusions. Considering the reviews this game is getting though, I think prehaps Ruffian would have been better off contracting the development of the game itself also :P

Oh, and this is bullshit. 'Toybox' (i.e. 'Keys to the City') better be fucking free.

Having to start all over again from the beginning after you beat the game is lame. They better add some free replayability in there, especially given its co-op focus.

@ Corduroy Turtle

I wasn't jumping I was Lightly pouncing while at the same time offering my opinion.

Besides everyone knows that come the end of the year the best place to get our "superhero fix" will be DC Universe Online, which will infact laugh in the face of both danger and games like inFAMOUS and Crackdown.

It sounds like it's not that bad that I only paid $40 for this. I'll still love this one because I really liked the first Crackdown. I can't wait to get off work and start playing!

I think that for the dlc coming out soon they should put a lot of stuff on there even though it was a great game. I think they should have an armored buggy car on there. I think they should make a super car that can glide also. I think they should make a SUV or buggy that can go up walls. For the guns I think a grappling gun would be cool. I also think that a shrunken gun turret would be good instead of that huge one. My last idea for the guns was to have UV rocket launcher for the freaks. Now for the strength I think they should come out with a new combo with like back-hand-springs and all. (like in SR 2) I think that they should also have like base ball bats and stuff to smash the freaks. For the agility I thought that the wing suit was awesome. I think that the explosives were good in this game but they got rid of the cloaking device which would have been cool. I think it would be good to see the cloaking devices come back and also maybe like a force field or something of that nature. I think that keys to the city will be in toy box and deluge will be focusing on the cell leaders.
