Crackdown 2 first details: Zombie mutants confirmed photo

The latest Game Informer is stuffed with information about the Xbox 360's upcoming superpowered crime fighter Crackdown 2, and the first details have spilled onto the Internet like so much baked bean juice on a white wedding dress.

Crackdown 2 revolves around a three-way war between The Agency, a race of infected zombie-like mutants and a civil uprising of angry rebellions who feel the government have failed them. The big news is that Pacific City, the setting of the original Crackdown, remains largely unchanged, with the same familiar map as before. That said, a number of roads and buildings have been demolished since we last saw the place.

As with Crackdown, players will be able to level up their crime fighters and hunt for skill orbs. A wider range of melee attacks will be available this time around, and you will also be able to call in for supplies at any time. In addition, a "more precise" targeting system has been implemented too, with rewards available to skilled shooters.

The vehicle roster has expanded, with helicopters now available, and new weaponry includes an upgraded shotgun, a railgun and sticky grenades. Four-player co-op will be catered to with mounted gun turrets on vehicles to accommodate comrades, while 16-player deathmatches are said to be very fun and posses a Call of Duty-style level system.

Finally, the city will decay throughout the course of the game thanks to this infection, while civilians will be more dynamic, offering to sell you goods and providing rescue opportunities. They'll also be carrying their own weapons and driving armored vehicles to protect themselves.

What do you make of that lot, then? Excited yet?

Well. That does it. I'm now officially sick of zombies. It's been fun y'all.

Wouldn't it just be easier to play Prototype again?

I'd have to agree that this whole zombie thing is getting milked dry.

Looks like it's time to go back to pirates!

Although 4-player co-op sounds awesome, the different developer and same city with slight modifications scare me a little. I loved the first Crackdown and really, really want this to do good, but we'll see.

Crackdown is Crackdown. Zombies as a tired ploy or not, it'll still be entertaining fluff.

Yeah, like Kif said, Prototype stole a bit of this game's thunder with some of the details mentioned (particularly the gradually decaying city). But fuck, Crackdown was incredibly fun for me, so I will be into the sequel.

Are we just pretending that the whole "twist ending" thing never happened in the first game? Hell, it practically didn't happen, since it took up like 5 seconds of voice-over to convey the "twist."

Zombies or mutants? Hmmm? Why don't we have both!

That's good, gangs of bandits would be too easy and just a repetition of the first one.

Yeah enough with the zombie shit. Although I won't mind if they introduce some true boss battles. No more ordinary dudes with lots of body armor.

I want bosses that have similar powers to the agent. Or some sort of giant mechanzied or monster bosses. I want battles that cover multiple city blocks.

How skilled are zombies at operating guns and vehicles? Seems like Crackdown would be a little lacking without swarms of lackies spraying bullets at you constantly.

Oh good. Now this game sounds like Prototype. Let's just set it in New York while we are at it.
Oh well, 4 player co-op is still a great boost.

@Char-

Yeah, I had been hoping that Crackdown 2 would feature agents against the Agency and their fellow agents. I'm still getting this without a doubt, I love Crackdown.

Decaying zombie-filled city sounds essentially like what Spider-Man:WoS did. Not like that's bad, I thought it was awesome to see the city change so much over the course of the game.

Despite the played-out, popularized zombie fad, this game is focused around co-op... and good co-op games are rare. Also, having fun with your friends can easily let you look past cliched plot points and settings.

you win

Crackdown has jumped on the zombie bandwagon, but it's still Crackdown. Four players tearing up the city is going to be a blast.

HEY LOOK LEFT 4 DEAD IS SUCCESSFUL, AND PEOPLE ARE PLAYING NAZI ZOMBIES! LETS MAKE ABOUT AS MANY ZOMBIE GAMES AS POSSIBLE UNTIL PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THEM AND NEVER WANT TO PLAY THEM AGAIN! Oh the mind of a game designer... Pretty fucked... I wish there were more (good) ORIGINAL games out there... It's all rushed sequels and zombies.

So...this is like what Prototype was, but with multiplayer. Granted, I never played the first Crackdown, so I'm looking forward to this. Still am not very comfortable with the whole "zombie fad" going around...as much as I love zombies in games, I'm getting tired of it quick. Still, super-powered people, 4 player co-op...count me in.

This zombie stuff is...contagious. (I know, very bad.)

I think/hope L4D2 (or maybe Dead Rising 2) will end this obsession developers have with inserting zombies at any chance. Post-L4D2 (or again, maybe Dead Rising 2), I don't want to see another zombie until L4D3 (if at all)!

I am so glad someone has finally decided to do something about the alarming shortage of zombies and mutants in the realm of video games. Thank you so much.

I did enjoy the first game, though, so I'll probably go right back to jumping from roof to roof looking for orbs as soon as I can.

They've fiddled with the aiming, which is probably because they couldn't have the old one in versus games. Also, if they focus too much on versus they have gone over to the darkside. Levelling systems similar to CoD belong in games similar to CoD.

oh great left for prototype crackdown 2. first of all the whole zombie concept via infection is biologically impossible. you can't have rotting ligaments lack of blood flow and still be able to run talk less move. To all you game companies out there please no more zombie gimmicks we have had enough OK. Honestly people how low can you go.

Hey you guys might have had enough Zombies...I haven't so screw you all...I've been waiting 10 years for them to make more then 4 zombie games total AND THAT TIME IS NOW.

Also Crackdown 2 will hopefully be more detailed then Prototype in how the city functions because there was a lot of room for exploration of the infection theme that didn't get explored (dynamically decaying city? DYNAMIC INFECTION? come on this stuff writes itself). Just one thing could we PLEASE get a split screen co-op - I don't care if you 1/4 the draw distance and 1/2 the number of characters on screen it's just fun to much around with friends.

Do want, but ffs, make it INSTALLABLE to HDD... I love CD1 but wont play for long due to it ripping my dvdrom to bits (why the f*ck cant it be installed?)... And also sounding like my old 2.2l turbodiesel engine endowed people carrier with loads of people in the back...

Again...DO WANT !!!

I can't wait to trigger the biggest explosion sequence I can possibly orchestrate. One of my favorite parts about Crackdown 1 was detonating massive burning smiley faces that wiped out whole blocks.
