In my personal Opinion nintendo tries very hard to cutting edge but forgets that today's age is also about graphics. IMO that's why the wii started to fall off and the PS3 started to pick up. Yes Sony had pricing issues when the PS3 first came out but to be honest Would I rather pick up a PS3 for 499 or an Iphone for the same price ...wow if you even had to think about that one then you are pretty stupid. It's the ps3 Why should I pay monthly fees to play shitting looking knock off games that are shitty and that's why their price is so small? This kid i go to school with is all like I LOVE MY IPHONE because have you played gran turismo 5? Yes I have I said he showed me the iphone version of that and I KNOW the NGP could do like 40 times better and not have to pay stupid monthly fees for games like that. 3ds...It's going to be really big at first because people are dumb and like sheep and just like the wii "It's so innovative" then they will realize they got scammed and they lost 249 for a shitty copy of the DSI with half assed 3d capability...think about it if you are lying down on your back wanting to play a game how is your 3d going to look then? you would have to tilt the console in order to see the 3d that doesn't fly with me at all. Because most of my psp time is lying on my back or sitting down somewhere. The screen angles on that 3ds wow that's gunna suck. Well who cares people will be people maybe one day we won't all flock to something that someone says is great maybe we will actually test the product for ourselves...That's the whole sony commitment thing. I"ve tested every PS product i could get my hands on and I love them all YES EVEN THE PSP GO. I'm Mad however that certain companies won't release their games on the psn but oh well. That's why I have 2 psps :D But this one looks beast and I've already got mine reserved at my local gamestop. 349 for a piece of badassed hardware that is sure to beat out any Iphone 4 game....That's just B3AST. They got my money ;)
Your point about Sony being the "loser" of the handheld race is wrong. They were the losers. You can't sell less than one company in a two company race and be the winner. They didn't fail, however, so I agree there.
In other words, the NGP(PSP2) will succeed because its not trying to compete with the 3DS but because its trying to be an all-in-one handheld multimedia device? That would make sense... if it wasn't for the fact that Sony keeps trying to market the damned thing as a handheld gaming device.

This is perfect for someone like me who has a Wii, DS and 360. I've missed out on so many great PSP and PS3 games, all down to not being able to afford everything. There's just no way I can.
With this, I basically have a PSP, PS3 and PSP2 all in one. It can also offer DS experiences. Honestly, I can't wait for this.

Will the NGP Succeed? there's no doubt in my mine that it will, the "hardcore" and sony fanboys will eat that up. Even if the NGP is pure shit, Sony still have the label of being cool and being for "mature" gamers and these two things are what some gamers want, to think that they need mature title to keep playing games.
But in the end will it defeat the 3DS, i highly doubt it.

Would you consider Rachet and Clank a big boy game because it was made for a "hardcore" system, or a kiddie game due to its colorful graphics.
Also, there have been a small amount of companys that have made wonderful shooters on the DS, with just a touchpad, look up Renegade Kid and a few of their titles, they controlled excellent.
In the end, i doubt that developers will properly create a whole new gaming experience on the NGP, that i can't experience on the PS3. Cause i doubt that they will use the touchscreen, rear touch screen, and tilt sensor to its fullest capability without making it gimmicky, or what most people will use to lable wii games "nothing but a wagglefest"

The biggest concern for most people about the NGP is the price, not its talent. Yet, when 3DS is going for $50 more than a Xbox 360 and Wii and barely on par with the latter in hardware, Nintendo fanboys go crazy and want it on Day 1. Before the NGP was announced, all I heard were fanboys saying how the graphics on 3DS was amazing and that the 6-year old PSP got owned. When NGP finally was unveiled, these fanboys change their tune saying "graphics don't matter." Which one is it? Then they accuse Sony of copying this or that when Sony was probably the more innovative company in the 60s through 80's long before Nintendo or Apple were described that. Nintendo created the casual market and now they are just another face in the crowd and the only thing going for them is their franchises recycled over and over. Apple is a much bigger threat to Nintendo than Sony. Going for the core market is a smart move from Sony when Apple and many cell phones will cut into Nintendo's audience. The Nintendo DS didn't have to deal with Apple between 2004-2007. Now they have to deal with them as well as so many other short attention span games that many smartphones will offer and at much lower cost. Look up the LG Optimus 3D soon to be announced at MWC next week. That will use the same screen as 3DS and the hardware of using TEGRA 2 is already better than it. 3DS is just an expensive handheld compared to other console prices and will offer expensive shallow games if it isn't. At least the NGP has the power to be an internet tablet which can make it a cheaper alternative if priced at $299-$349.

In all fairness Motion control purpose was to attract casuals not core gamers like you and me, and it looks a lot less gimmicky than kinect, im not interested in move but i would lie if i said it didn't caught my attention. imo it needs special/unique ttiles tailored for it and would be worthy if it had more games like sorcery it would be great. Sorcery currently is the only Move game that really caught my attention

Sony has just used the 'gimmicky' controls that it's competitors have made successful so you can't call the NGP innovative in it's design.
NGP will fail because of three things:
1.Overpriced
2.Lack of marketing
3.Lack of third party support
Nintendo could have quite easily made a console that is capable of the best graphics ever but it would be too expensive to sell well, the 3DS's graphics are great it is a considerable improvement over the DS and the PSP.
Personally i would have preferred it if NGP only had dual analog controls, sure the touch pad on the back may allow for some 'interesting' gameplay but Sony is not going to be able to compete using the same controls. I'm not a fan of Uncharted to begin with but watching that video where they were using the touch pad to climb a ladder and the touch screen to swing between vines it just showed how unnecessary those controls are for a game like Uncharted.
Also, compared to the 3DS there is once again the issue of the NGP's screen not being protected and could become damaged quite easily and now with the touch pad on the back i wonder if that could cause issues over time the touch pad may become damaged from being placed on a hard surface. Maybe that wont be an issue we'll have to wait and see.

I have hope it will succeed. My PSP is loved and it knows it. It is my portable system of choice. My desktop console, however is the 360.

I'm definitely in this camp... the PSP is one of my must have devices when I go anywhere (school, doctor apps, vacations, etc) and everything about the NGP excites me bc it is bridging that gap between home, handheld, and cellphone games. Being able to work on my trophy score from any where I want is a huge win for me.

you do know you can play old UMD games from PSN right? almost every good PSP games is made it there minus MG Acid and KH and some retro JRPG's(hopefully they sort all this out. you just have to buy them again, which sucks but at least it's there forever(unless PSN closes). i think they're already improving the store much better.
i agree people need to realize development costs are very2 high i don't think it's easy to make HD consoles games just like that. so yeah hopefully more unique games do com on NGP and not just portable versions of home consoles :)

On a less technical note, I think that the biggest points of concern I have read in the posts from the HATERS is 1) The cost of the NGP and 2) Whether or not good software will be produced/available for it. That covers most of the comments. There are really SIMPLE answers to the HATERS...1) is, If it's too expensive for you at launch DON'T BUY IT! Wait a few months down the line for the price to drop and then pay. Or even better, do as I did and trade in your DSXXL and ALL games for it now for store credit to be used for the launch of the NGP. You will also be able to get extra credit for your PSP1000/3000/GO if you trade it in for a NGP at Game Stop or EB Games. Then there's 2) There is already a HUGE selection of games on PSN that will be even more joyful to play (FF7?) again with the NGP's OLED and power. A huge list of developers are making games that are going to be incredible on the NGP. (COD,UNCHARTED,RESISTANCE,KOJIMA'S PROJECT,etc) Many of these will only be playable properly with the NGP'S already agreed upon superior power, and twin stick control scheme. The 3DS is basically handicapped from the start, having one nub, less power, and a worse screen to play it all on! More N64 ports or Mario's to boast? 3DS software lineup will be eclipsed by the QUALITY and DEPTH of games that will be released for the NGP. You will be able to play all the games the 3DS can, and plenty more! (can'y say that about the 3DS) What are the 3DS owners going to do/say when an amazing RPG like OBLIVION or DEMON'S/DARK SOULS is only available for the NGP? I can hear the HATERS WHINING already~So, to sum it up, the 3DS Is a weak boxer with one arm that has no chance against Mike Tyson's NGP!

The 3DS comes out in about two months, and you've reported nothing. In the last couple of days, we've had new Iwata Ask, UK Launch titles confirmed, and an Australian press conference. No offence, but the NGP isn't out for a long time, and there's no news for it. Its all just useless fanboy bullshit.

Not really, I'll play your game. The PSP is just a PSP+. A lot of people are saying the 3DS just has a visual effect, but isn't that all graphix are? The 3DS add to the visuals, the PSP is just more cowbell. And a capasitive touch screen?Those slabs of casual fail do nothing for games, this coming from an iPhone user. Now let's consider the 'console experiance', we usually think of the FPS genre with that, and as a PC gamer I can tell you that analogs are dirt-tier for playing them. The 3DS's control set up is like keyboard and mouse but with an analog replacing wasd (see; epic).
Face it, the PSP+ is just more of the same with a few more gimmics.

I really thought Sony had lost the plot this generation & were heading for an almighty fall from grace. However they do seem to be picking up some momentum as of late. With exclusives like Rockstar's Agent (which I can only assume will be awesome) & the mightily sexy NGP on the horizon, Sony might finally see some green from my shallow pockets.
I can't wait to get one. The rest of you can just go play ghost trick or somthing. I hate games that use the wiimote, the classic controller is awesome; fucking support it!, and I hate using a stylus. I want my ports, thank you.

NGP would let you play a FPS with analog for movement, rear touchpad for aiming at targets on the game screen while keeping a nice clear view... while at the same time having four action buttons and an analog stick for quickly turning or moving the camera. That's a better shooter layout than even consoles or PC have to offer.

@MEATwaffle - what's wrong with using the touchpad for aim while you work movement and camera with sticks? Seems to me like you'd be able to walk all over guys who have to wrestle their crosshairs across the screen before they can even start trying to line them up with some precision, that's like caveman stuff now.
Another great thing would be porting some existing games over (or cooking up some new ones) with cross-platform play between NGP & PS3... that way there's no catch-22 where there aren't enough players to make a new game for a new platform fun to play.

Team Tolentino all the way. I agree with a lot of Samit's points, but my problem with his argument is this notion that handheld gaming has to be pigeonholed into pick up and play 'casual' style games. There's absolutely NO reason why the NGP/3DS can't offer ALL kinds of handheld gaming experiences. Whether or not either system WILL is another story altogether, but I refuse to believe that the NGP's hardware will be its downfall.

I as ready to dismiss this as just a fanboy post at the "gimmicky" comment about the DS, but then you admitted Nintendo does have a habit of pulling off their claims. I'm not sure why you tossed the "gimmicky" comment in there at all. Claiming the DS or the Wii are "gimmicky" at this point just tosses credibility out the window.
Also, an iPad is $500. I could honestly see the NGP launching around that price given all they're throwing into it. I'll be impressed if they bring it in at a lower price point, but this is the same company that launched their most recent home console at $600, so $500 for the NGP isn't exactly a crazy thought.
I also don't think that the PSP "betting entirely on superior hardware" was the reason it trailed the DS so much. I think that was determined more by the price point and battery life compared to those of the DS, combined with the cost of game development. Developers would put out games on the DS much more cheaply, and had the additional incentive of the stronger install base due to people being more willing to pick up a cheaper console with longer battery life.
I expect that's going to be a big issue with this generation, too. If Sony can bring the NGP to market at a similar price point as the 3DS then I expect it will be a much tighter contest between the two. Not to mention battery life. People are already unhappy with the 3DS' battery life, if the NGP is even worse in that area it'll basically be a handheld home console you can't really take anywhere.

I also agree that the addition of a second analog stick is great, and long overdue. The lack of the second analog stick on the 3DS is just odd in this day and age. Definitely a point against the system.

I find the DS as overrated as Justin Bieber's popularity. That is ironic because Nintendo caters to that kiddie crowd. The original PSP is a great handheld if given another chance. So unappreciated. The sheep tend to follow whatever is more popular and just bash the 2nd place finisher even if is out its way as the 5th best selling system ever. Haters are gonna hate. Seems like the media loves to bash Sony now when they were once the media darlings. I also think the 3DS will be as overrated as Avatar's box office success. 3D will help sell and I find it funny that nobody is complaining that a Nintendo handheld is more expensive than two of the home consoles out there.
Don't get me wrong. I am a collector and eventually get all the systems. But I'm no rush to get the 3DS when the launch titles don't interest me and I could find the 3D extremely annoying over time. I am patient enough for a price drop. With the 3D off, I could just end up with a portable GameCube w/ N64 remakes and I got a GCN for $99 back in 2004. I don't need a portable GameCube w/ weak battery life for $249 when I already own the real thing sitting in the my room as well as the Wii. If I did get a 3DS this summer and it does get annoying, I will just sell it for the NGP later this year. I look at the NGP two ways - an expensive gaming handheld but fully loaded. Or a slightly more affordable mini-tablet if priced at $299-#349.
