Could Ubisoft be in line to own Lara Croft and company? photo

We just told you about the possibility of SCi Entertainment/Eidos being taken over, and now it looks like Ubisoft was the one making a bid approach.

The Guardian just ran an article that says that the bidding is "believed to be from its French rival Ubisoft." They also mention a few other notable companies that seem to be poking their noses into the situation, namely Time Warner, Electronic Arts, and even Sony -- yes, the same company that SCi blamed for recent losses.

Nothing is definite yet, but the situation is worth keeping an eye on.

I wonder: if a French company were to own Tomb Raider and Lara Croft, would her English accent have to change to a French one?

Seeing how Ubisoft is to thank for some very very very cool titles in the past few years, I'm happy with the prospect.

I mean, imagine EA buying Eidos. *shudder*

@Neonie: Renders don't need to move in real time.

So, Tomb Raider: Rabbids' Ruins?

My respect with Lara Croft expired long ago. In the last couple of games my favorite thing to do was launch Lara into a swan dive and watch her erupt into an epileptic ragdoll seizure upon impact.

Damn, I wish that people would quit bashing the TR games as much as they have been. They weren't all that bad. I'm telling you that it kicks the shit out of the PC version of Spiderman 2 the movie game or Enter The Matrix. Sure the TR games after the third title were going downhill but they were not THAT bad. Otherwise, if they were then nobody would have bought them.

Anyways, somehow I'm not surprised at the companies eyeballing Eidos. Sales of the Sony PS1 were helped driven by the TR series and EA always wants their big fat, greasy, greedy, grubby, monopolizing hand in the cookie jar. If any of those companies should take over Eidos, then I pray it's Ubisoft because they actually put out quality products.

I mean just think of what would happen if it got into the hands of EA. They would churn out even quicker sequels, expansions, DLC, and low-quality titles simply for a quick and large dollar bill. What about Sony? With the lack of popularity for the PS3 and continuing reliance on the PS2, Sony might try to get as many exclusives as they can to stay top dog and hopefully sell more PS3's and getting the TR franchise would give them the opportunity to do that. If Sony is the buyer then there is a chance that the TR series could end up at least a timed exclusive their their PS line screwing the many PC and 360 players who enjoy them.

Anyways, I hope Microsoft gets them...

I would accept any of those options EXCEPT Ubisoft, I'd even take EA games as a possiblity.

Ubisoft would definitely be my pick out of those options. I would be a sad panda if it were either Sony or my least favorite development company ever, EA.
