Could this be the end of the so-called Wii drought? photo

According to a Bloomberg report, President Satoru Iwata revealed today that Nintendo is currently developing 45 new Wii titles (as well as 79 Nintendo DS games!) that will start shipping in the summer of this year. And doth mine eyes deceive me? It looks like it will all be first-party stuff. Could this really be true? If so, wow.

Personally, I have not really cared that Nintendo and Sony have been trickling out the new releases in the last few months; using the word “drought” never seemed right. Granted, I am pretty behind in playing some games and welcome a little catch-up time, but the Wii and the PlayStation 3 are newly released systems. It took the Nintendo DS about six months to really ramp up and find its groove, and look where that system is now.

Regardless, this is exciting news for Nintendo fans. While the end of 2007 already looked sufficiently covered (Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, etc.), having this many games in development predicts a bright 2008 as well. Not only that, for the love of the Lord, what could these games be? There have to be some new IPs in that huge pool, right? The anticipation alone is killing me.

What do you think? Good news? Or are you holding back an opinion until you start seeing something more tangible?

[Thanks, Adam!]

Hoho Brutal. In any case, there seems to be pointers that yes Nintendoh is about to do some fixin in dar games. They just bought that Xenosaga developer from Namco/Bandai, so that definitely adds to this...

Sweet news. I'm honestly not surprised in the least, though. Kudos on the second paragraph chad, about time one of the actual bloggers here said that. Commendable stuff.

Expect to see 50+ boring games get released. Please please please let it be something good! If it is a bunch of platformers and simulators, I'll officially be done with the Wii for good.

I think a Pikmin game is pretty inevitable, but I agree with you Bahamut_Zero -- the sooner the better! :)

More tangible results please. I'm sure Mario is going to be delayed until 2008, and Metroid may too. They never gave a deadline for when these games are set to be released. Expect a lot of the games that don't get abandoned to release 6 years from now.

Hey Kannon - I'm not bitter. This isn't the first time we've heard this from Nintendo (or any other game studio for that matter) and the fruits rarely fall from the tree. 45 games from one company is a tall order, no matter who they are.

I'm just trying to stem the rash of disappointment which is going to occur as a result of people setting their hopes unrealistically high. I'm not saying no good games are going to materialize out of this, but instead drawing on Nintendo's track record whic isn't exactly known for timliness and quantity.

To be fair, if Game|Life is correct, there's a good chance that not all of these 45 games will come to fruition.

Also, wasn't Silicon Knights (the guys who made Eternal Darkness) stolen by Microsoft or something?

I think peopl are missing the point here, the Wii is easy to develop for, Nintendo purposely took this direction over the "bigger is better" direction of the PS3, 360.

For the HD consoles, every game has to be a huge big budget epic in order to justify the console itself, this is unsustainable (unless you have infinite pockets like Microsoft).

All Nintendo are doing is drawing on the stregnths of the Wii - lower production costs, less labour intesive and time consuming production, accessible games for people from all walks of life - this means that 40+ games for the Wii is very possible. Remember, way before Nintendo knew the Wii was going to be a success, they created the console assuming that they alone were going to provide the software, so this latest news is just a confirmnation of their original plan.

the problem is that people are willing to put up with such dismal game releases for so long because all they really want is metroid or mario or smash bros. you can't really justify a purchase based on one game can you? especially one that is potentially months, if not more than a year from release. nintendo fans are sad sad people.

and by your own logic *nobody* could justify the purchase of a ps3. for what, Resistance, a HL2/halo ripoff and motorstorm? there aren't ANY exclusives to buy a ps3 for. and it's the cost of 3 wiis

Most of my friends with an Xbox only have Halo and those with a PS2 only have Gran Tourismo. I think the majority of console owners only buy 1-3 games for their system...

see, rather than develop the games then release the console, Nintendo made a console and THEN started to make some games...

ooh NOW I get it!!1

Who says that all 10,000 games are going to be released in '08?

Oh wait. Good Wii news is good, and good PS3 news is bad. I forgot I was on the internet.

I think this is great news, though not surprising at all (you mean all of Nintendo's first party studios are working on Wii games!? OMG!). Considering this is only the first party list and every studio that can build a Wii game right now is, maybe people will finally stop screaming drought. I know Nintendo has burned everybody pretty badly the last 10 years, but they're making up for it.

Scoreness! That is 3 articles!!!

Also these are JUST first party games, 3rd party games will be on the way TOO! so that means more than 45! Exciting!

PS: I heard somewhere that the Xbox 360 was kind of in a drought until Gears of War came along. That is a formidable drough too *gasp*

Some truly astounding displays of butt-thrusting idiocy here. Nintendo are producing 45 wii games. Even MORE proof that they suck. That makes 108% sense.

Are you people double stupid or just half retarded?

Eternal Darkness used a patend which is the property of Nintendo (the sanity meter). So even if Silicon Knights partners with Microsoft, Nintendo can use the sanity meter in another game.

Your all dumb, did you not stop to think that maybe the dev kits have been out for about 1.5-2 years, so maybe the fact nintendo has an insane amount of huge studos plus a couple newly purchased ones, well lets see two years+lots of studios= a believable amount of games that could be good. Seriously two years between alot of studios is a lot to develop, especially since it is easy to develop for. Now they have the real console which is even better than an early stage BETA dev. kit.
