According to a Bloomberg report, President Satoru Iwata revealed today that Nintendo is currently developing 45 new Wii titles (as well as 79 Nintendo DS games!) that will start shipping in the summer of this year. And doth mine eyes deceive me? It looks like it will all be first-party stuff. Could this really be true? If so, wow.
Personally, I have not really cared that Nintendo and Sony have been trickling out the new releases in the last few months; using the word “drought” never seemed right. Granted, I am pretty behind in playing some games and welcome a little catch-up time, but the Wii and the PlayStation 3 are newly released systems. It took the Nintendo DS about six months to really ramp up and find its groove, and look where that system is now.
Regardless, this is exciting news for Nintendo fans. While the end of 2007 already looked sufficiently covered (Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, etc.), having this many games in development predicts a bright 2008 as well. Not only that, for the love of the Lord, what could these games be? There have to be some new IPs in that huge pool, right? The anticipation alone is killing me.
What do you think? Good news? Or are you holding back an opinion until you start seeing something more tangible?
[Thanks, Adam!]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm just trying to stem the rash of disappointment which is going to occur as a result of people setting their hopes unrealistically high. I'm not saying no good games are going to materialize out of this, but instead drawing on Nintendo's track record whic isn't exactly known for timliness and quantity.
Also, wasn't Silicon Knights (the guys who made Eternal Darkness) stolen by Microsoft or something?

For the HD consoles, every game has to be a huge big budget epic in order to justify the console itself, this is unsustainable (unless you have infinite pockets like Microsoft).
All Nintendo are doing is drawing on the stregnths of the Wii - lower production costs, less labour intesive and time consuming production, accessible games for people from all walks of life - this means that 40+ games for the Wii is very possible. Remember, way before Nintendo knew the Wii was going to be a success, they created the console assuming that they alone were going to provide the software, so this latest news is just a confirmnation of their original plan.
Most of my friends with an Xbox only have Halo and those with a PS2 only have Gran Tourismo. I think the majority of console owners only buy 1-3 games for their system...
ooh NOW I get it!!1
Oh wait. Good Wii news is good, and good PS3 news is bad. I forgot I was on the internet.
Also these are JUST first party games, 3rd party games will be on the way TOO! so that means more than 45! Exciting!
PS: I heard somewhere that the Xbox 360 was kind of in a drought until Gears of War came along. That is a formidable drough too *gasp*
Are you people double stupid or just half retarded?
