Could this be Nintendo's first ever US press mention? photo

NeoGAF stumbled upon a rather interesting little slice of history that may very well be Nintendo's first ever mention in North America. It's a section of the New York Times from 1955, way back when Nintendo was still making playing cards. It talks about Nintendo using a trademark for a word meaning "happiness, fortune or wealth."

The report also delves into the meaning of the name Nintendo, stating that the three characters making up its name are a "fanciful" expression roughly meaning "a company whose fortune or prosperity should be left to the mercy of Heaven." The New York Times implies that Heaven indeed seems to be smiling upon the company, and given its good fortune in this generation, Heaven is still doing so.

Quite an interesting little bit of history, in any case.

Wow. I never realized their name had such a meaning. I thought it was something about Pretend and Innovation, but that certainly is awesome.

Does that mean nintendo was breaking it's own strict code against mentioning anything religious in the NES era by having it's own name in the game? :D

Nintendo? It that a new hip indie developper that Anthony forced you to write on about?

Nintendo does have a very interesting and rich history. They should bring back the love hotels again.

Nintendo owns the Seattle Mariners.

And knowing is half the battle.

Nintendo does indeed have a majority interest in the Seattle Mariners. When you go to Mariners home games, you can bring and sync your DS to their stadium network and get instant replays, track stats and games throughout MLB, and order food via a DS Download Play app thing. It's pretty cool. :D

And yeah, Nintendo literally means 'leave luck to heaven'

I remember hearing about that bit of trivia a few years ago. "Leave luck to heaven" (the shortened version) is a pretty nifty name for a company I have to say. Considering how much money the DS and Wii are printing, I'd say leaving luck to heaven was a pretty decent business decision. :P

I thought "Nintendo" was just the name of the business family who started it. I guess when you're a famous samurai house you get to make up meanings and no one will dare question you (or your katana).
