Could the Sands of Time return to a Prince of Persia videogame? photo

Last week, Destructoid had the pleasure of chatting with Prince of Persia producer Ben Mattes about his upcoming game, the franchise's history and the movie. As you may have gathered by now, the new Prince of Persia game features a brand new Prince in a whole new universe.

We like the old Prince and the Sands of Time trilogy, so naturally we asked if we'd ever see a return.

"I mean, never say 'never.' I think the Sands of Time trilogy had a really interesting hook to it, a really kind of interesting theme to it," explained Mattes. "But certainly we are done telling the story for now, and certainly we're telling another Prince of Persia story that we think is every bit as rich and interesting and unique as the Sands of Time story was.

"So yeah, I think the best I can say is 'never say never'," he continued. "You know, [the film's producer/director] Jerry Bruckheimer [and] Disney, it's a pretty powerful attractor in terms of drawing eyeballs to the Prince of Persia franchise. I think it would be negligent of Ubisoft and/or some other company to not kind of capitalize on that by creating a videogame that kind of goes along with that. In my opinion, it's an appendix -- for me, the movie would be an appendix to a story that was already told. And the story we're telling now is the future of the franchise"

So, Prince of Persia: The Movie: The Game? Looks like Ubisoft or "some other company" is looking into it, although this is pure speculation. Bear in mind, also, that the move has been pushed backed to 2010, plenty of time for Ubi to get a tie-in game together.

Stay tuned to Destructoid for the full interview between Nick Chester and Ben Mattes.

I just want a remake of sands of time but with the fighting system of two thrones and I'll be happy. But I don't want ANYTHING if Jordan Mechner wasn't involved in it.

I want this done, if only for the music alone.

Get the same guy to do it.

PoP:SoT's music was dreamy and awesome, really felt like it captured the essence of an 1001 Arabian Nights tale.

One of my fave game soundtracks ever.

@Darth Kupi:

Well that guy's also doing part of the music for the new game. Unfortunately so is the guy from Warrior Within/Two Thrones. I really hope the latter isn't involved as much.

I don't see why everyone loves the Sands of Time so much. The three games are fine the way they are. I'm glad they moved on.

I'm glad they're taking a new direction too. I enjoyed the majority of the trilogy (not Warrior within).. but it's cool that they are trying something new.

should be sands of okami-the gameplay and watercolor candy coat seem a step back from the original trilogy. Looks like it might be fun, but not at 60 bucks. I'll wait for a used copy at 30 bucks.

@Shirley Temple

Hey now, Inon Zur is pretty good. He didn't do the awful metal in Warrior Within, by the way - just the orchestral stuff that played far too infrequently (and mostly during cg cutscenes).
